Whenever the season starts up again, Willamette will have a new defensive coordinator:

Welcome home, Coach Tucker!

The Willamette vs. Lewis & Clark stats are ... interesting.

And thanks to all who had suggestions for more entries on the Linfield vs. Willamette rivalry chronology - I'll have some additions next fall.

Trust me, it was weirder to see it all in person.

The first quarter looked a lot like the Bearcats were still shellshocked from the beatdown in McMinnville the previous weekend, but after that, it felt like they settled in and gave L&C a decent fight.  If Castanada hadn't thrown a pick six, and a Bearcat PAT in the third quarter hadn't been blocked and run back for two, the game might have played out a little differently at the end.  Obviously I haven't seen PLU yet, but I'm amazed that L&C beat the Lutes by two touchdowns on the road.

Props to junior wideout Max Andersen, who provided a bright moment in an otherwise tough season for Bearcat football by setting a school record with 14 catches for 247 yards and 3 TDs.  That was extremely fun to watch.

Didn't plan to watch the game.  Didn't watch the game.  Glad I didn't watch the game.

L&C should be favored by a couple of touchdowns this weekend, but after the last couple of weeks, I'd be happy just to see a competitive game.

I'm biased, but I'd add 2007 in Salem to catjumper's list of Willamette/Linfield rivalry games.  The Bearcats were 1-3 coming into that one and hadn't beaten Linfield in a decade, while the Wildcats were ranked somewhere in the top 15.  Linfield scored the game's first 19 points, and WU starting quarterback Grant Leslie tore his ACL midway through the second half, but Willamette somehow rallied for a 33-32 win on a Matt Bicocca field goal with four seconds left.

Obviously, 2008 in McMinnville was fun too, but that 2007 game is the one I love to tell people about.

AJWWW:
There had been talk about Willamette dropping their football program? Details?

Nah - their roster numbers are in decent shape. I can't see that happening.

There has been absolutely no talk about Willamette dropping football.  None.

Having said that, if we ever want to be anything but an NWC doormat, I think the university needs to radically reassess its institutional commitment to football--particularly the level of support and help the program is getting from admissions and financial aid--because what's been going on the last three (really five) years just isn't sustainable.

Need to look at the Salisbury vs. Ithaca ECAC Bowl at the University of Delaware a few year's back...then you would have seen it all.

And Bearcats.

What a weird, weird game that was.  Although I suppose that some weirdness is bound to happen when you haven't won a home game since October of 2015.

The fumble return for a touchdown should have been called back.  It looked like a fumble from where I was sitting, but unless we're playing by NFL rules, the play should have been blown dead when the ball was picked up by a Willamette player who was lying on the ground.  On the other hand, you play to the whistle, and the whistle never blew.

That said, I've never seen a team as undisciplined as Oxy was--three ejections (one for targeting, two for picking up two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties each) and 16 penalties for 177 yards.  In all honesty, it cost them the game.  On Willamette's game-winning drive, once the Bearcats got to the Tigers' 20, every first down came via penalty.  Then Oxy picked up two more unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the PAT, so Willamette kicked off from the Tigers' 35.  I can honestly say that I've never seen that before.

Watching Jordan Jenkins, a First Team All-NWC basketball player, line up at wide receiver is really fun.  Six of his ten receptions this year have been touchdowns.  Physically, at least, he's the best wideout Willamette has had since Schoettgen.  After taking a nasty helmet-to-helmet hit in the third quarter (the targeting ejection), it was great to see him walking on the sidelines with no visible concussion symptoms.

The Bearcats are better this year--there's no question about that.  One busted coverage aside, the defense looked miles better than it did against La Verne, and the offense is moving the ball pretty well.  Whether that translates into an NWC win or two is a different question entirely, but I do think the games against L&C and UPS are going to be competitive.

Either way, congrats to Coach Parker on his first win.  It's going to take a lot to get the ship turned around, but this definitely felt like a step in the right direction.

Hi everyone -- long time no see.  (Not that there's been very much to see football-wise in Salem lately).

Willamette alum and current L&C offensive coordinator Isaac Parker has been named the Bearcats' new head coach.  Hopefully he can get this thing turned around.

Not sure how many people expected Willamette to win the NWC tourney but they just did it by beating George Fox twice today.  Short trip to the regional for them and they should be the only NWC team in the tourney.
The Dark Horse did win.  I will take tips on the Dark Horse anytime!

Haven't been posting anything because I didn't want to jinx it! ;D

This team has been red hot over the last month and a half: 18-4 over their last 22 games, and 11-1 in their last 12.  Steindorf has become a legit ace: he threw a complete game on Friday to beat Linfield, then turned around and tossed six innings of one-hit ball on Sunday in the final game against Fox.

Couldn't be happier for Coach Swick and the guys on that team.  It's been a long time coming.

Well, Willamette's loss to UPS last weekend -- but more really, the earlier series loss to George Fox -- came back to cost the Bearcats the regular season title, but it was still a fun weekend of baseball in Salem, featuring two more walk-off wins and a series sweep over Lewis & Clark to cap off Willamette's best season since 2001.  What a terrific job by Coach Swick, his staff, and all the players.

The conference tournament should be a lot of fun, and these Bearcats have plenty of experience playing in McMinnville: they're 6-2 at Roy Helser Field this year.

I thought Willamette's pitching was exposed by George Fox last weekend, so of course they responded with a really impressive three-game sweep of #17 PLU -- including winning game three on a walk-off balk in the 10th inning.  This was the first series that Willamette has played at John Lewis Field all season.

It's become pretty clear this year that anybody in the NWC can lose to anybody else on any given day, which makes the title race between Willamette (13-5), PLU (15-6), and Linfield (12-5) even more exciting.  The Bearcats have UPS (away) and L&C (home), PLU has George Fox (home), and Linfield has Whitworth (home) and Whitman (away).  And Willamette owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over both PLU and Linfield.

I'm not sure how they're doing it, but these Bearcats just keep winning.  One walk-off would have been special, but back-to-back walk offs to win a key NWC series was unreal.  Whitman's pitching staff is no joke, and if the Blues' offense can just put together 3-4 runs per game, that might be enough to get them into the NWC tournament.

Willamette heads down to SCIAC country this week for four games against CMS, CLU, and Oxy. I think the biggest NWC series of the weekend will be PLU making the trip over the mountains to Whitworth.  George Fox has struggled, but I still think it was a big deal for the Pirates to get a road sweep last weekend.  If they can take 2 or 3 from the Lutes, they're right back in the race.
