I honestly don't see us putting up 35 points on Whitworth.  I think this game is going to be really close.

significant |sigˈnifikənt|
adjective
1. sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy

Given the amount of Linfield folks spending their time posting about Willamette, I'd say we're pretty significant right now.  Come on guys, live in the present!

The link to my recap of the La Verne game is below.  Was it D O.C. who mentioned he might have some pictures?

Yes on the kickball, no on the pokemon.

Speaking of Willamette history, I had the opportunity to sit down for a Q&A session this week with Mike Allegre, the Bearcats' longtime radio guy.  Space constraints forced my editors to cut out more than half the questions, but I'll try and post the extended version on here when I get the chance.

I'm still on the fence in Whitworth vs Willamette but I'm leaning towards the Bearcats due to they have been getting it done all year long.

No!  Pick against us!  We don't stand a chance! ;)

Thank you wildcat11, that just made my day.

*I mentioned the major story to a Willamette assistant coach at app. 2:30PM because my opinion 48 hours earlier was that Redlands and Willamette had better prepare to meet on the West Coast in November. He was not aware of the player.

I think I can partially explain this, in that we've got our own injuries to worry about.  It sounds like Kyle Johnson, who had three touchdowns against Concordia-Moorhead and scored the first TD against La Verne, might be joining Ryan Whitcomb on the "out for the season" list.

Also, we've got a couple of teams we need to beat in order to be playing anyone past November 15.

Good luck, Loggers!

No offense, D O.C. ;)  Salem isn't exactly a cultural center itself.

Out of curiosity, does BearcatPress travel to La Verne?
For now, I'm just content to be covering the only ranked team in the NWC. ;)

Hey that is a great accomplishment for Willamette.  It has to be one of the top highlights for the program in the past ten years.  Good job.

Now you're just stealing from my article when I said it's our best start since 1997 . . .

Nope, only day trips for me.  Which excludes all but two road trips: Tacoma and some town near Lafayette.

And I appreciate the introductory kindness, 11, but I've got a pretty good idea of what's coming at me in October.  For now, I'm just content to be covering the only ranked team in the NWC. ;)

Having followed Bearcat football the last two years, I'm definitely nervous about La Verne - especially given our penchant for starting games slowly and losing games that we should win.  If we do manage to get to 4-0, you better believe I'll be pinching myself.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Linfield folks giving you flak, Griz.  If you were a Willamette fan, on the other hand . . . ::)

Welcome to the board.

My recap and analysis of last week's Willamette vs. Southern Oregon game is now online.

Just got off the phone with Speckman.  Disappointing news for Willamette fans: Ryan Whitcomb is going to have knee surgery and is done for the season.

Hi again everyone,

What a game!  I'm working on my article right now, so I thought I should share a couple of impressions.

1.) Willamette won this game because of the defense.  Period.  To turn the ball over in your own red zone three times in the first half and only be down by a touchdown was huge.  SOU did not cross the 50 yard line in the fourth quarter.

2.) Speaking of the defense, they've scored 21 points so far this year.

3.) Mitchell Rowan is a really good punter.  Really, really good.

4.) The offense hasn't been spectacular, but it's been getting the job done and (up until yesterday's first half) not turning the ball over.

5.) SOU is good, but not great.  Athletically, they're extremely talented, but they've got discipline issues.  They really hurt themselves with a couple of personal foul penalties, an offensive pass interference that wiped out a first down, and interfering with the punt returner.  That last one gave us the ball at midfield with 10 minutes left and led to the touchdown that iced the game.

This was a huge win, but Speckman can't be happy with the fact that we've come out flat - this week, really flat - two weeks in a row.  I like this team a lot, but I'm not sold yet, and I'm worried about La Verne as a potential trap game.  Last year we followed up beating Linfield by laying an enormous egg at UPS, so I'm still antsy about next week.  But as long as wildcat11 keeps picking against us, I think we're in good shape. ;)

Willamette 31, SOU 23.  FINAL.

Bearcats were down 17-3 in the second quarter off three turnovers inside our own 30.  17-9 at halftime (PAT blocked after a Leslie TD pass).  Halfway through the third, Willamette returned a fumble for a touchdown, two point conversion good.  SOU then kicked two field goals, but the Bearcats returned an SOU punt for a touchdown early in the fourth to take a 24-23 lead.  After another SOU punt, Willamette iced it with another TD.

More details after I regain my sanity tomorrow.
