Men's soccer / Re: Covid Impacts on Upcoming Season
August 05, 2020, 01:52:10 PM
Looking past the fall, if there is not some real solution to the pandemic than the spring seasons will be in jeopardy. I do not see any real slow down in preparing for a 2021 baseball season with 15% of the games scheduled to date (typical for this time) but nothing will stop this than a vaccine or cure with a vaccine the most likely. Great progress but getting it to the world will take many months and as much as I might debate, D-III baseball players are not the most in need.

But there were only five rounds this year.

Because there would be no milb season.  why stock the coffers with players who will not play.

A radio show today was talking about the reduction in minor league teams.

Will this improve college baseball at all levels because more players will be forced to develop their game in college rather than the minors?
I'm assuming the lower minors will be hit the hardest.

I think that the number of free agent signings will be impacted the most.  The draft use to be 60+ rounds and is now just 40. This is less than two squads.

120 teams is just 4/ MLB team (AAA, AA, high A, low A). This means essentially eliminating the short season A's and rookie leagues.  Most rookie leagues are in the teams training facilities and will probably change to an instructional league with no games, just instructional play (wild if you ever watch the games as substitution rules are suspended as players leave and come back).

Saw Garcia (and the rest of the D-III CWS champion Chapman squad) at the 2019 World Series.
He worked five games in the series, two against Washington & Jefferson (games I called), holding the Presidents to no runs and one hit over three innings, walking one and striking out one.  He was a beast.

He moved into a starters role this year and it was good for he got a lot more innings than if he stayed as a closer.  Dominant in both roles.

The Los Angeles Browns?

I had never heard this.

Baseball was doing quite well on the west coast. the sf seals were as good as any team and the Browns would have been at best the second best team on the coast.

One avenue would be moving up a division or NAIA  I can see many seniors making with the experience making a mark in a scholarship program.

A GREAT START...The Union College Dutchmen are in Winter Haven, Florida for their annual southern trip. So far, so good as they've swept consecutive doubleheaders beating Purchase twice yesterday and Castleton and Capital today. The trip continues with doubleheaders against Alma and Trine. The preseason Liberty League pick is showing how it's done. ;)

I can't wait to see the Dutchmen at Shuttleworth Park on 3/21 vs. RIT.

Thanks D3baseball.com for the headline recognition.  :)

Well of course I didn't get to see the Dutchmen at Shuttleworth Park. Union finished it's Florida swing with a slugfest doubleheader split with Alma before dropping two games to Trine where the bats inexplicably went silent. A 5-3 start to what would become...the season. :'( I feel bad for the seniors. Is this the last we'll see of stalworts Colin Kelly and Sean Cullen? Also Jack Myers and pitchers Josh Garber, Dominic Nardone and Colin Nye.  Tough way to end their careers. Let's hope there's a path for some of them to return next season.

They can return but for private schools with high tuition, it will depend on each players circumstances.

It will be strange to see Cortland end the season with a losing record and out of the Top 25.

It hasn't been officially announced yet, but North Park is going to the online-until-Easter-with-fingers-crossed format as well.

I have seen other schools doing the same.

Grinnell cancels spring sports

All athletics events, including practices and competitions, are cancelled for the remainder of the semester.

https://www.grinnell.edu/news/important-covid-19-planning-updates

on the positive side they will have more time to devote to school.  Ironically, now with many schools moving to online for the remainder of the term, it wold be easier to get the "classwork" in for athletes on the road

2020 D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, Week 2
Through games of Sunday, March 1, 2020:

#   School (1st votes)   Rec   Pts   Prev.
1   Washington U. (9)   6-0   563   4
2   Cal Lutheran (7)   13-1   550   15
3   Chapman (1)           10-3   534   1
4   Trinity (Texas) (2)   8-2   529   2

Remember that five of six losses for the three West Region teams came this last weekend

I know it's early, but that's a lot of West representation at the top!!
3 out of top 4.

If the season ended this way would they send 2 of the teams to other regions?
Or just the 2nd place SCIAC team (which wouldn't be a guaranteed selection)

Again... it's early, but it's fun to speculate!!
