I think it's safe to say ABCA does some pretty bad research when it comes to D3. My thoughts are that if they are going to spend time creating a list, they might as well create a list that makes sense and atleast try to pretend that they are paying attention. Some of these all-region teams are pretty ridiculous.

Bulldog Baseball’s Nicholson Selected to ABCA-Rawlings All-West Region Third Team

Senior pitcher Nolan Nicholson (Fullerton, CA) capped off a remarkable collegiate career with the University of Redlands baseball program, earning a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)-Rawlings All-West Region Third Team, as announced by the ABCA on Tuesday.

Nicholson (10-2) was the No. 1 starter in the Bulldog rotation all season and defeated two teams that advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series (No. 9 Chapman University and No. 2 Kean University). In 89.1 innings of work, he struck out 45 batters while maintaining a 3.83 ERA, allowing as many earned runs as he did walks (38). Among Redlands pitchers who tossed more than 15 innings, he held the opposition to a team-low .269 batting average. Notably, Nicholson held the D3baseball.com Player of the Year, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges’ Drew Hedman, hitless, forcing him out twice while walking him once.

This marks the second time that he has gained ABCA-Rawlings All-Region honors as he earned a spot on the All-West Region Second Team in 2008. Nicholson’s other laurels include two ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First-Team selections (2008, 2009), one First-Team All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) accolade (2008) and two Second-Team All-SCIAC nods (2006, 2009).

Redlands (25-15, 14-7 SCIAC) finished out the regular season at third in the SCIAC and won more than 20 games for the fifth straight season.

I just went through all the pitching stats for all of these all-west region guys, and im stunned to see that the ABCA pretty much only takes into account wins and losses. I know that W's are the most important in the end, but give me a break on some of these picks.

it's all kind of subjective and everyone has their own opinion.

ABCA was the one who got it correct when it came to Wooster centerfielder Sean Karpen.  He was probably the best all around player at the World Series, and the ABCA actually put him on their All-American team (2nd team).

Same with pitcher Mark Miller.  He was named an ABCA FIRST team All-American, and everyone saw what he could do on the main stage....and he did it all year for the Scots.

Who is a joke on the list?  Who would you put as 1st team? 

I think all 3 first team pitchers shouldn't be there considering their high ERA. The three pitchers I would put there instead would be Macklin, Jones, and Johnson. All 3 have a low ERA, decent amount of wins, and a good amount of strikeouts per innings pitched. I was just trying to let people know that the ABCA pretty much only accounts for wins when considering all-region and even all-american.

Old Cat- part of the problem with these teams is when people don't look at what makes up the stats. Which teams did they throw against? Did they throw five innings versus a Cal Tech? I don't think Kitchens should have made it, even though he's one of the best out west, he missed too many starts. It's about winning. Who got the most wins vs the top 25 teams? Anyone beat any of the final eight? This can raise your ERA, just ask Holland and Booher.

Division III Hitter of the Year, while Trinity College's Jeremiah Bayer

eight-member sports information director's panel, while Bayer received
