3 game suspension is a joke, but at least it got this board working.  Especially for a guy that had thrown as few innings as he had.

I've been surprised by the lack of publicity by the SAA.

I've almost given up trying to find info about the new league.  Either the teams are not wanting to send info or they have no one trying to collect info.
The pre season analysis was sad, with some teams not responding to the questionnaire.

Oh well, the SCAC was a really good conference.  Don't know how long it will take for the new conference to get going.  Maybe the SCAC had growing pains too in the beginning.

Wow BSC!

I heard Rhodes' Coach Cleanthes say in his final interview they have a good nucleus of young hitters coming back next year.

If you want to see a good nucleus of young ballplayers look at BSC's crew.

Good luck with that new SAA thing.

Looks like everyone will be looking up at BSC for a long while.

Congrats to them in the World Series.

Good program, good facilities.

Tournament starts tomorrow and the SCAC board goes quiet???
Unlike past years where the 3rd place team from the East might allow the 1st place West team to get by without using their #1 pitcher, I sure cannot see that happening this year.
Little doubt in my mind that Coach Page would like nothing better than to beat TU.
He will have his players prepared.
I would expect game one tomorrow will be played at a very high intensity.  Seems to me Trinity has no choice but to start Klimesh and, in my view, they don't even think past tomorrow.  Millsaps-Trinity is as good as it gets and I expect the same tomorrow.
I have followed the SCAC's for a lot of years and this looks like the best and most competitive 6 teams in all those years.  While, for me, University of Dallas being there might be a big surprise, the other 5 teams are close enough that any of them could be on top and dog piling on Sunday.

IFDad, I agree, I thought everyone was over on the National Topic board, but not much there either.

BSU pitching is really strong and of course they have the big bat in Maxwell.  I know he has been pitched around all year and still leads the country in a bunch of offensive categories.  They will be tough to beat.

Millsaps looks a little thin on pitching but their No. 1 Edwards is as good as anyone in the SCAC, so the battle with Klimesh (I assume) should be a good one.  I have been trying to read between the lines, but is Lucero out?

I remember last year when Smoyer was supposedly done, but pitched a 9 inning gem to knock Rhodes out of the tourney the day after their 21 inning marathon.

Rhodes has really good starting two, with Baker pitching great games in past tournaments.  Plus lead off hitter Perkins has regained his form after a tough year last year.

And I believe Dallas has won their last nine out of ten?

I listened to the Coach's interviews on the SCAC website, and agree with Cleanthes, anybody can win this one this year. And I don't believe that is coach talk.

I would like to thank Millsaps broadcasting crew for doing the free video again.  I look forward to watching a lot of ball the next few days.

Good luck to all teams!

Should be a good series to watch in Memphis this weekend as Birm. South. travels up to Rhodes.

Since going to the 3 game conference schedule, the best Rhodes could muster the last three years is 1-2 record at best for the weekend.
This year Birm. South. is batting 30 pts. higher and their team ERA is better by about 1.30.  And Maxwell is crushing the ball.

Rhodes has gotten some really good starting pitching this year as Carden and Baker have lengthened out their outings and have been pitching really well.

The first couple of games may be decided by who kicks the ball around the least.  Birm. South. looks to be winning statistically in this category too.

Birm. South. had their 13 game winning streak broken last night by Emory.

Rhodes got back on track vs. Hendrix after going 2-1 at Centre.

Rhodes needs to win this series to have a chance at first it looks like.

I saw Millsaps went 2-1 at Oglethorpe this past weekend, so the dog fight for first is on in the East.

I don't think any team would want to finish third and have to play Trinity to start the SCAC tourney.

Well at least Rhodes held Marietta to 11 runs in their first game ::)  They are probably happy Marietta left town.  Looks like Centre may be getting some good pitching now.

Saw Rhodes gets #1 Marietta next week end.  The Lynx will see some really, really good pitching then!
It looks like Millsaps is ready for SCAC east conference play right now.

I have read Rhodes is 5-2, but they are now 5-3.
Baker walked a ton of guys yesterday and Rhodes kicked it around.  Saw the first baseman was injured early in the game.  Looked bad. He left the field immediately.  It looked like he may have got hit in the face with the ball.  It was tough to tell watching the free webcast Emory does.  Their announcer does a pretty good job, but the shot through the backstop is tough to focus on.  Maybe today will be better at LaGrange for the Lynx.
Saw Birm. South. got a win 3-2 I believe yesterday.

Rhodes hasn't had to go deep into their bullpen yet this year due to the seven inning games they have been playing.  The third day of their series have been pretty ugly.  Carden and Baker will be bulldogs in the first two games of a series though.  Rhodes plays a 4 game set in ATL and LaGrange starting Friday, so we will see how deep their pitching is.
Surprised that Centre got beat pretty good in their opening series.  I thought their pitching would be better.  Looks like Millsaps have found more bats, although they were stymied at Huntingdon this week.

Awards / NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Recipient

Nice to see a DIII player, Hunter Chandler, receive this award.

Interesting to see that Rhodes had two student athletes win this award.  The other athlete was Sandy Henin a track athlete.  Rhodes website says they are the only DIII school with two recipients.

i want to preface my comments with this...i don't think mu should get a regional bid and i'm not sure that emory or rhodes will, either, but the fact of the matter is that emory and rhodes will at least be in the discussion, while mu and maryville will not...there may be other regions where this is problematic (i think i read that the central was a little "interesting", as well) and other teams that think they are deserving (mary washington?), but i'm focusing on the teams i feel most deserving and the region i am most familiar with -  i don't want to beat a dead horse, but i can't comprehend how/why rhodes was ranked in the first place, and continues to be ranked - i've done some pretty comprehensive research including methodist, maryville, emory and rhodes...4 teams for 2 spots...and i simply can't see how the committee justifies rhodes as a regionally ranked team, let alone the #5 team in the region

here is my spreadsheet, and here is an overview of each of the 4 teams as measured by the primary and secondary criteria - take a look, and feel free to shoot holes in my research

https://spreadsheets1.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?hl=en&key=0Answ6eNPeBYddGR6R2J1ck5XOUMwWG1lVkpYTzJIX0E&hl=en&gid=7

ultimately, who does the committee answer to? how can they simply overlook the criteria that the ncaa has established?

Rhodes didn't get in because of this spreadsheet done by narch.  They were in until color was added to presentation.
If it wasn't for the color, then Rhodes would have been in.
Nice job Narch.
You have more power than Coach Cleanthes in the south committee.
Hope you sleep well at night.

Congrats to all of these student athletes!  Interesting to note that all of these players have at least one more year to play.  Also, BSC has a ton of guys on this list.

The local newspaper has a great story on Millsaps this morning.  Before I give the link, I'd like to take a moment to address an issue about this D3 message board:

The Millsaps people know about the photos I take and possibly even have some idea of the number of hours it takes to cover all the Millsaps teams.  There's hardly enough time left for anything else including posting to this message board, but I post here because it is important.  It helps bring recognition to the Millsaps teams and players, something that is almost universally lacking in D3 sports programs.  I don't want to see the Millsaps teams and individuals get virtually no recognition--something that happens with many of the other SCAC programs and players when no one from their school takes the time to post to the message board.

I have a point and it isn't that I'm so wonderful.  The point is that by posting to this board, it become inevitable that some people will get upset about what I write.  Even when trying to stay positive, even when avoiding second guessing, there will be some people who will find reasons to get upset.  Like recently when I said that in my opinion, it looked like the pressure of being #1 or trying to achieve #1 in the last month was a factor in the mini-slump at the end of the year.  I'm under the impression that this offended some people, spinning it to make it sound like I was accusing the team of choking under pressure.  That wasn't what I said.  I said exactly what Coach Page says in this article--it looked like Millsaps started trying not to lose instead of trying to win.  They changed their focus as their situation changed.

I hardly care about what non-Millsaps people think about my opinions and I don't expect every Millsaps person to agree with all of my opinions.  It's just bothersome when some people take one small piece of the whole and then get upset because they misinterpret or simply disagree with an opinion.  If you disagree, sign on and write a post.  And if you think you can do better, join in so I can post less and get a little more free time in my life.

That's just something I've wanted to get off my chest for the entire year.  And now I'll get off the soapbox and here's the link to this morning's story:

Hey Frank,
I have enjoyed your posts over the years.  Unlike a lot of boards I read I really like this board because most of the posters keep it positive and avoid the smack that is associated with athletics.

Since you post the most on this board you always run the risk of someone turning what you post into a negative.  It's just the nature of posting on any subject.  But, I have never taken your posts that way.

Good luck in the South bracket.  Rhodes beat NC Wesleyan earlier in the year.  I know a little about a couple of the other teams and I think you guys have a great chance of coming out of there on top.

Man, I look at the teams that got in and think of what could have been for Rhodes.  They got beat by Marietta by one run in ten innings.  Had Wisconsin Stevens Pointe beat in the ninth and kicked the ball around for a one run loss.  Oh well, on to next year for the Lynx.  Sure gonna miss those seniors!

Also, good luck to Hendrix, what a great season they have had!

Well, here goes my end of the season rant,

It is an absolute shame and a joke that this conference has a schedule designed so that teams can play an inequal amount of conference games. OU had a turnaround year and while they didn't help themselves by how they played at Depauw, they still should have had the opportunity to earn themselves a bid to Jackson. What I am trying to say is that after beating Sewanee's ace and then pounding their number 2 starter they did not get to play the 3rd game. Not to slight Sewanee but I firmly believe this would have been an OU win. Couple that with the fact that the series with Centre (which was at home!) got cancelled and what shakes out is unfair scheduling. I'm not trying to say OU would have beaten Centre because I am sure Centre could have played well and won but at least then it would have been settled on the field. I just find it unbelievable that the conference games (which are what should matter most when it comes to scheduling) could not be rescheduled or made up. I understand the money side of things but it is truly a shame that the OU player's season is over and it is partially out of their own control.

Hey Mr. Bruce09,
As I had posted previously, I figured someone would be taking the time this week to write your sentiments.  It was just a matter of who it was gonna be, OU, Centre, or Rhodes.

You would have to be a math wiz to figure it out going into the weekend.  But, Rhodes folks were thinking that if you went 2 for 3 and the Lynx won 2 of 3 then we both would be one game over .500.   But because OU played LESS games your winning % would be better and consequently OU would have gone to Jackson.  The same scenario goes for Centre also.

Then to make matters worse, it looked for a while that the games would be rained out in Memphis this weekend.  So, when the first game started at Autozone stadium Saturday, there was a lot of pressure on the Lynx.  They had to win because of the possibility of rainouts for the balance of the weekend.  Also, had to survive a controversial call on a two out ninth inning home run by Sewannee.  It was ruled foul.

So, in summary, last year's 4 game series but not playing all teams and this year's 3 game series playing everyone doesn't seem to work.

It is a tough situation and I'm sure not smart enough to have an answer.

Hendrix won't sweep.

They emptied the bench in the second game...I think the bus driver is playing first base, and some Southwestern student that opted to take a study break by going to the baseball game pitched the sixth inning for us.

It's 8-0 Southwestern in the bottom of the eighth.

Perfectly fine with going in at No. 3, because it shakes out well if we get through the first game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Hendrix wins the first game against DePauw, they'd get the loser of Millsaps-Centre (let's just say Centre.) If they lose, they face the loser of Trinity-Rhodes...and the Warrior lineup has a ton of confidence against Trinity at this point.

Food for thought: Daniel Ward went 0-4 in Saturday night's victory and was a non-factor in Sunday's victory. Jeff Forgerson, too, was not overpowering. Hendrix fans should take this as a positive sign, considering the team managed to beat two very good SCAC starters (Willis, Freeman) without their two big boppers.

In fact, the only pitcher in the conference that seems to give the Warrior hitters the howling fantods is Aaron Williams. Hopefully, Millsaps will pitch him early in the tournament. As for Hendrix, Dave Keine was given only spot duty to stay fresh in the throwaway game, so I would assume he'd be taking the ball Thursday. Keine has been a Sunday starter, but has also been the team's best starter in the second half of the season.

In the interim, any basic knowledge of DePauw would be greatly appreciated. Also, since I'm hoping my boss will let me cash in some vacation time, advice on some of Jackson's better watering holes would be dandy as well.

Hey Gus,  You're gonna face Gerlach.  A really good pitcher, he's gonna hit his spots, he's gonna pitch deep into the game and he leads the SCAC in ERA in conference games.  He is a really fine pitcher.  Very composed.  If he leaves they bring in a freshman (usually) and if blue is giving the outside edge, he'll throw it there over and over.

They are well coached and when they get guys on, they start moving runners around.  Hopefully you can keep Weiner off the base paths.

Rhodes got through Sewannee this weekend, with a great pitching match up in the first game, Holt got another complete game victory.  The second game, Rhodes got good relief pitching and the bats came around late for a win, and then Sewannee just had nothing left for the blow out win yesterday.  Their #1 pitcher, Bartleski, has had a tough year, but has great stats.  He gets my hard luck for the year award.  He has lost a bunch of close games.

As with most tournaments, we now get to see how deep everyone's pitching is!!

Playing on that rug ought to be interesting.
