Congratulations to your Coach Gagliardi, on his record setting career at SJU.  He made a diffference in the game.

So much speculation... :o

From Frank's noon SJU chat, it sounds like they plan on having a coach in place by Christmas (excellent), so we won't have to wait too long.

It's also possible that wording was intentional so as not to slight any of the internal candidates. And depending on the thinking, Mike Grant may be considered an internal candidate since he's a member of the Johnnie family.

Tom could also have been trying to keep the applicant pool down -- D-III head coaching jobs these days attract hundreds of candidates and I'm sure this one would get more than most. That's a lot of paperwork.

I would assume (you know what that entails) that if Mike Grant got the job, he would keep many of the "Nos." I believe he has instituted much of that at EP. I would doubt that at the HS level, he could be as casual in instilling some of the technical aspects that those who have played 4 years in HS would have.

The "no's" have become quite common throughout all of football.  Contact at practice now-- especially with concerns of concussions-- has been greatly reduced even at the HS level.  The use of nicknames and casual communication between coach and player is regular and the norm.  The no's really reflected a change from the Military/Lombardi theory of football, which is dying out quite quickly.  I have seen youth teams violate the list of nos more than most high school teams, to be honest.

I think any coaches under consideration will likely subscribe to most of the "No's", regardless of whether they are Johnnies or not.

Personally, I would like to see our new coach develop the new generation's list of rules-- much like John's list has shaped the current football coaching philosophy.

Belated thanks to John and best wishes for his retirement from this football parent.  Spoke to #13 last night by skype and he sent his regards as well.  He was lucky to find SJU and to play for John.  (Aside: He's now tearing up the X-League in Japan, where he's catching passes from former UCLA qb Kevin Craft - led the league in receiving yardage his first year - not bad for a former OLB.)

Most of the committee is set.

It's been so long since SJU had to do this: Do they still use the black and white smoke signals when a new coach is chosen?

That sparks a question out of curiosity only. Does the new head coach have to be Catholic?  Please don't read anything into this question- curious only.

Who knows since the school hasn't had to make this decision since the 'Council of Trent'.  :D

Hi Emma,
I am not on the committee, but Blake Elliott is and he is Lutheran (at least he was before getting married-I don't know if he still is)- I would highly doubt if Catholicism would be a prerequisite to getting the job.

Just my initial thought, but my impression of the makeup of the committee is that it is tailor made for Gary Fasching to be the guy.

I recall a conversation before the GAC game-(prior to the bye week when Pat Reusse made his famous prediction that John would announce his retirement during the bye week)-with a couple of Johnnie alumni while enjoying a few beers prior to the game where the subject of cash flowing into the the football program like a river with the announcement of a new head football coach for the simple fact of a new spark and optimism. A.) Do you agree or disagree with this theory  B.) Would a member of the current staff be more or less likely to get this kind of optimistic welcome  C.) Would the entire coaching staff (less John) be intact with the hire of an internal candidate. D.) What,if anything would an internal candidate do for excitement in recruiting the next championship team?
