Not long to start of the hoops season... good time to start up a new topic for the SAA.

CENTRE is coming off a wonderful 2011-12 campaign that saw the senior-laden Colonels win the SCAC regular season, the SCAC tourney and advance to the D3 sweet 16.  A lot of gaps remain to be addressed by the the Colonels for this season.  Significant youth and no Maggie Prewitt for the 1st time in 4 years.  A new conference to boot.  There are some gamers on this Lady Colonels squad - Chelsea Benham, Paige Baechle & Bridget Winstead come to mind.  A sophomore guard, Maggie Hartlage shows lots of potential too.  The early part of the season will challenge the squad and some losses will be racked up.  Look for this team to grow as they begin playing the conference part of the schedule.

Rhodes is off to a good start, sitting at 5-0 at the moment.    Things fall pretty quick after that with Berry and Sewanee playing slightly above 0.500 ball at 4-3 and then a big drop-off to the rest of the league.

Big win for Centre on the road tonight @ Spalding in double OT 76-70.  Paige Baechle poured in 27 points along with 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Colonels.

Nice road win for the Lady Colonels today in Birmingham pulling out a 67-66 cliffhanger.  Mary Winstead drove the lane with 3 seconds to go getting fouled with the score knotted @ 66.  She converted the 2nd free throw to send Centre out a winner.  Paige Baechle weighed in with a double-double yet again pulling down 13 rebounds and tallying 26 points.  Bridgett Winstead followed with 11 points and Chelsea Benham scored 10.  Got to hand it to Centre as they hung around the final 20 minutes to get the W.  This team is still working to establish an identity but I think they are developing more consistency & balance with each passing game.

Rhodes looks to be the team in the SAA for the 1st season of play.  Lauren Avant is the real deal as she averages a double double nightly.  She generated big numbers today - 32 points - in a comfortable win at Oglethorpe.  I attended the one game @ Mallory Gym this season that Rhodes lost to a lesser opponent on an overall bad performance by the team.  In that game, Avant scored 39 & nearly pulled the Lynx out of the ditch at the end.  Rhodes now has at least one of their big post players back playing & this will help bolster their offensive options.  I don't see any major competition for Rhodes in league play this year.

Avant plays at another level. Fun to watch her.

Looks like Avant is going to have another 30+ points effort to lead her team over Hendrix today after being down early in the 2nd half.

Centre Lady Colonels got double-doubles from both Baechle and Benham to win convincingly by 19 over Sewanee @ home this afternoon. Baechle continues to average a double-double for Centre posting 19.3 points and 10.5 rebounds.  While it's a growing season for the young Colonels, they have opened SAA play 3-1.

Centre Women go to 4-1 in conference play with a 68-51 win over Oglethorpe tonight.  Bridgett Winstead and Hillary Moore led the Colonels with 15 points each.  They tallied 9 triples between them.  Paige Baechle had another double-double with 13 points & 12 rebounds.  Chelsea Benham pitching in 11.  Centre hosts Berry on Sunday.

Competitive defensive tussle tonight at Mallory Gym between Rhodes and Millsaps.  Rhodes prevailed down the stretch winning 58-51.  Millsaps played hard and dominated the 1st 30 minutes of action.  The Majors' prominent post presence - Shantae Morton - owned the lane a good bit of the early going.  With about 7 1/2 minutes left in the game, Morton got socked with a double technical for arguing a call.  Rhodes knocked down 3 of the 4 free throws to take the lead which they were able to maintain to the finish.  Sara Johnson came up big with some key plays and 15 points for the Lynx.  Lauren Avant made several circus scoring plays in the home stretch.  Sara Womack was big on the defensive end and grabbing rebounds in critical moments of the game for Rhodes.  Rhodes remains undefeated in conference play.

Benham in fact had a career night in leading the Lady Colonels to a 67-55 victory over Hendrix this evening. She knocked down 13-22 shots in scoring 29 and she also corralled 17 rebounds. Two other players in the game posted double doubles - Jamie Tate had 10 boards to go along with 15 points, and Paige Beachle continued her streak with 13 points & 16 boards. Hillary Moore tallied 13 for the Colonels who are now 6-1 in league play as they prepare to host the league's 1st place team in the Rhodes Lynx on Sunday afternoon.

As Centre prepares to play league #1 Rhodes Sunday, the Colonels have been riding a nice 5-game conference winning streak. The way of the Colonels during this run has been through the low post where Paige Baechle and senior Chelsea Benham are doing yeoman's work. Baechle is riding a 10-game double-double streak of boards & points. During the winning streak she is averaging 20 points and 13.4 rebounds a game. Benham's numbers aren't shabby either - she's averaged 16.6 points and 9.1 rebounds. What's in the numbers?  The team has out rebounded its opponents the last 6 games by 6.5 each time out. Last night the margin against Hendrix was +20!  The key is stopping opponents on the defensive end with consistent board work and pulling down a few offensive rebounds too. Both Baechle and Benham have been effective at both ends of the floor doing this. Centre is only an average shooting team so the solid rebounding has been big for the team. Benham & Baechle are also helping open up the perimeter for Bridgett Winstead, Hillary Moore and other Centre guards to get some decent offensive looks at the basket.

Colonels will have their hands full defending Rhodes on Sunday. The Lynx's Lauren Avant has no equal in the league offensively in creating and getting the ball to open teammates. Rhodes has a constantly improving point guard in sophomore point guard Sara Johnson who shows lots of guile and intensity nightly. The team will play small much of the time preferring to spread the floor with quicker athletic players that create nightly matchup issues for opponents. The Lynx can change tempo by bringing in 6'3" post Amy Handelman.  Sunday we'll just see what Matt Dean and Rhodes cook up to combat Centre's dynamic duo of Baechle and Benham. Something tells me one of the less-heralded players on one of these two teams will step to the forefront to make a big play that helps determine the game's outcome.

A good basketball game @ Centre this afternoon with Rhodes coming out on top 71-66 and ending the Colonels' 5 game winning streak. Rhodes continues to be the talk of the league as the team ups its league record to 8-0 and 16-1 overall.  Catherine Eckert led the Lynx with 16 and Lauren Avant contributed 13 rebounds and 13 points to the Rhodes cause.  Centre led throughout this one but their bigs - Benham and Baechle - got into foul trouble while carrying the team most of the way.  Benham, despite fouling out, had another huge performance dropping in 22 points to go along with 14 boards.  Baechle was tough too as she matched her seasonal average of 19 points and 11 rebounds while committing her 5th foul in the game's waning seconds.   This was Baechle's 11th consecutive double double!  Centre goes back to the road this coming weekend against Oglethorpe and Berry.  Rhodes visits Millsaps and Birmingham Southern.

Congratulations to the Hendrix Warriors on their win @ Sewanee today.  It has been a long, difficult season record-wise but this young team is improving with each passing game.  There are probably a few more wins coming their way in the remaining weeks of play.
