All the talk about potential future Final Four spots is difficult because the most important thing is the least visible thing and that is who/where is interested in hosting it. Can only choose from the places that make themselves available to be chosen!

Quote from: nescac1 on March 17, 2024, 08:03:18 AMIt's always going to come down to $$$ in terms of who the host site is, but it would be nice for other teams to have a chance to bring that type of virtual home game atmosphere by rotating it among regions of the country every few years - if there are arenas that are willing. But that will never happen ...

It sounds good in theory but is unlikely to work all that well in practice. Trine is just so unusually close.

In my mind the best bet is to try to be fairly centrally located in hopes of having a couple fanbases within reasonable driving distance. I believe the centrality of Fort Wayne (at least compared to Salem) was a consideration in them winning the bid and I hope it continues even though we know it will be somewhere other than Fort Wayne starting in 2027. Anywhere along the Indiana-Ohio-Pennsylvania corridor makes a lot of sense to me.

Quote from: TUAngola on March 09, 2024, 10:11:24 PMOH MY GOODNESS!!  I am still in shock.  :o

Will post tommorrow as I need to comprehend what I just witnessed.  Jubilation for the Thunder, heartbreak for the Pioneers.

That was UNBELIEVEABLE!! And now to be in the Final Four only 45 minutes from campus is quite a luxury.  Best of luck next weekend!

Second time in three years an Indiana team makes it to Fort Wayne. Wabash had a huge crowd for their semifinal against Elmhurst two years ago and I expect Trine will have a tremendous crowd as well considering the home support they received this season and how close to home they will be. Really looking forward to being at floor level Thursday night for what should be a great atmosphere.

Quote from: Inkblot on March 04, 2024, 03:06:49 PMThe membership committee has released its agenda from last month, but not its report, so there's no indication yet whether these have been approved... Penn State Brandywine applied to enter provisional membership, while Johnson & Wales (NC), Mayville State, and Regent filed exploratory applications. https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/committees/d3/memb/Feb2024D3Memb_Feb26Agenda.pdf

Mayville State is interesting in that it would be the first D3 school in North Dakota and expand the current bounds of region 9. I believe the conference invitation requirement doesn't come into play for the exploratory period, only when it comes time to make the official application for provisional membership, but I wonder what initials conversations may have taken place. It would seem the UMAC and MIAC are the only logical possibilities, though the MIAC doesn't strike me as a league that would be interested in bringing in a provisional member. So, UMAC by default?

Quote from: thebear on March 02, 2024, 08:17:41 AMI saw Farmingdale over Stevens, Penn St- Harrisburg over Hood, Whitworth over Cal Lutheran, Texas Dallas over Trinity (TX), Whitworth over Cal-Lutheran as upsets; 4 top 25 teams [Elmhurst, DeSales, Cal Lutheran. Trinity (TX)] knocked out the first night.

Interestingly, computer ratings/rankings do not see Farmingdale's win over Stevens as an upset. D3 Datacast, Massey and D3 Bubble all had Stevens as the underdog in that matchup.
I just looked and D3 Datacast Had Farmingdale at 77 and Stevens at 32.  D3 hoops in their poll had Farmingdale at #45 and Stevens as #26 in ORV.  I also noticed the NCAA listed Stevens as Home and Farmingdale as Away, which i've been told means the higher seed is the home team in neutral site game.  Regardless nice win for Farmingdale.

You had those rankings reversed from the efficiency ratings. You are correct about Top 25 voting and the home/road designation, so it becomes a matter of perspective. The computer rankings were in agreement about Farmingdale being the favorite, however.

Quote from: D3BBALL on February 27, 2024, 03:38:53 PMSure looks like HSC, based on all metrics, is pretty much a lock to the final 4.

Spring really like those stats and the history from D1, does make sense.

On the new D3 Datacast today we took a look at the bracket as a whole in terms of round-by-round odds to advance based on the efficiency ratings. You're right, Hampden-Sydney is an overwhelming favorite to reach the Final Four.

Nebraska Wesleyan very well may be a deserving host if they win tonight's ARC title game but it seems they did not submit a bid: https://d3datacast.com/2024/02/24/sources-nebraska-wesleyan-did-not-submit-ncaa-host-bid/

Quote from: pointlem on February 21, 2024, 08:50:31 PMWithout forecasting this weekend's result, my sense is that Hope's season has progressed much like last season--with the team gaining momentum as the season approaches its end. The addition of TJ McKenzie and his team-leading steals/minute has helped. They will, however, need to shoot better than last night's 34% to upend Calvin (which would likely merit a Pool C bid, Knight-Slappy?)
I hoped Hope would shoot better, but didn't expect that much better. Gabe 31 points on seven 3's? That lifetime memory for him was on no one's bingo card. And TJ!

That will be a tough performance to replicate tomorrow night. But we shall see. And in any event a loss is not season-ending for either Calvin or Trine, who next weekend will still be playing, and, given their talent level, quite possibly beyond.

It was the kind of performance that won't soon be forgotten and will surely go down in Calvin-Hope history as "the Quillan game" on both sides of the rivalry. When a player is going to go off like that you need to have someone who can just about match shot for shot and Calvin didn't have that. Just have to tip your cap to Quillan and Hope and move on - fortunately there is NCAA Tournament moving on talk to have!
