Jefffan you seem really down about Amherst Basketball

I think one of the reasons David Hixon was so succesful was that he put a high premium on recruiting talented point guards. Point guards run the show and importatly can make something happen when it seems nothing is happenning on offense

Can not predict what future freshman can do
But have seen Johnny McCain who is a senior at Canterbury play and make 6 3 pointers (his high school team has a future D1 point guard) he has the potential to be one of the best shooters (not necessarily scorers) ever at Amherst (hopefully his defense can be good)

Also saw Marc Garraud who is a point guard at Nobles play and an Amherst commit
Nobles other than him is not that good and saw him against Rivers School which has probably four or so future D1 players
Garraud however was a point guard on the Middlesex Magic AAU (coached by a former Williams star)
The Magic is loaded with really good D1 players and Garraud did a fine job
probably more like 5'10 than 5'8 but really good athlete, fast, with good hands, able to shoot outside , and seems to be a good passer
He is more like Nicky Johnson at Wesleyan (former rivers school players) not saying he is as good but could be an improvement
that said very diffcult to bank on freshman

yes I know what Charlie Randall shoots, I did not need not anyone tell me waht they shoots
I am just saying Amherst is missing some of their players,
Randall can be good, he shots too many 3 pointers
I do not think Amherst is very good this year

A week ago teams were world beaters, now this person or that person missing for teams abd  it is a problem- that was my point

teams are what they are

Amherst still rebuilding with fresh/soph and recruits

went to see Amherst recruit Johnny McCain from Canterbury School in local tournament
He can light it up from 3 beyond NBA 3 point line

New England Recruiting Report took note on Twitter:

Amherst commit & @cburyboysbball
shooting guard Johnny McCain went off for 26 points on 6 three-pointers during a win. The long-range sniper needs very little time/space to get attempts off and can hit treys coming off screens or when spotting up.

Amherst grads David Wasserman and David Moore are limited co-owners of Atlanta Hawks
might as well make it complete

we will see about Martin and the Berkshire Randall

I guess from my basketball pedigree I must not know anything ( not true) Spring Street
I certainly know enough to be polite to others on the board and not be contentious  which is why I rarely comment on this board

Jefffan
In Amherst recruits there are 3 individuals who can hit the 3 pointer- Martin, Hamond and Randall -
Martin is more of a 2 guard
As far as Randall versus Bernstein, I watched Berkhsire play, Bernstein is good but the problem is that set up low and Randall more outside
weird I watched Berkshire and they never, never looked to pass to their big man in the final playoff game
Let the games be played next year and then make the decision

maybe true about Drew Martin previously I believe he was all league at Boston College High which I thought he was a postgrad
time will tell this a year away
time will tell
regardless who starts with these crazy subs, be surprised if Tam/Randall/ Randall/Martin is do not play alot

Tam - we have greater knowledge because he previously played in Italy

stay tuned
I will leave the rest to the others on NESCAC MBB board

anticipate Amherst may start 3 or 4 freshman next week
the players recruited have complementary skills
Giovanni Tam is a true 6'10" center with excellent footwork around the basket but can hit a standing short at the top of the key\
Charlie Randall iks a 7'0' player who can hit the 3 point shot and shot inside and terrifc  shotblocker who I anticipate will play the strong forward (4)spot

Drew Martin is a 6'7' wing-2 guard who gotten very strong recruiting notes , not as much love from NERR, two or three years ago he was a 6'1" guard , so he can shoot the three, hit the runner and rebound

Chris Hammond 6'6" forward is an extremely strong and atheltic (tight end in football) with a quick release jumpshot from behine the three long line and excellent jumping

Note that both Drew Martin and Charlie Randall are postgrads so they are more like college freshman
'Giovanni TAm plays on one of the best high school teams in America so his daily practice is good practice for college

lots more shooting and scoring and intriguing size

In both Tufts and the game today against Williams, the defense was not there for Amherst
Somewhat sloppy play by Amherst
surprised the game was as close as it was

luckily there is much more NESCAC basketball to play
focusing one game is tough as players will continue to grow during league play
Amherst especially is a team whose growth will continue in part due to being young and recovery from illness such as Grant Robinson
not sure but Day may have flu

Alausa in warm up favoring his right leg with a slight limp, so likely battling injury
McCarthy and Ryker Vance may be back later this month or early next month
