A nice video from a local news spot highlighting Andrus Field as the oldest continuously used football field in the country.
Here's a great still shot from the video:
NESCAC CHAMPIONS: 1974, 1978, 1980, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1996, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023
UNDEFEATED SEASONS: 1911, 1915, 1934, 1949, 1954, 1955, 1993, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2022

Trin--very cool old-time photo.  Thx.

CBB recruiting...Maine is a beautiful state and a great place in which to go to college (especially the excellent CBB schools).  Those who haven't been to Maine often likely do not realize it.  However, from a recruiting standpoint, the reality is there is no pool of recruits to draw from in the east, north or west.  Therefore, all roads must come from the south.  If you're traveling from the south and interested in NESCAC schools, undoubtedly you will have to travel by some others in the league just to get to CBB.

Another CBB recruiting challenge.  In addition to geographic challenges when competing with the rest of the NESCAC for recruits, the CBB also must differentiate among themselves.  For those recruits interested in matriculating to the northeast of Massachusetts, there are three options all within 45 minutes of one another.  Imagine if Middlebury had two other NESCAC institutions in such close proximity all in the state of Vermont.  While each of the institutions are unique with distinct cultures, campuses, etc., they all share the common drive up interstate 95 from Massachusetts.  Recruits more often than not are able to visit all three in a day or so.

Nescacman...thanks for the thought.  Family friend..more on wife's side was a Civil War bluff like myself and a relative of Stonewall Jackson.
All this talk wrt football formation, etc. is amusing to me.  My HS football rival used the "single wing"  formation!
The "DARP" at Amherst hired a young QB from the Un of Delaware as his assistant.  That assistant, Miller became the legendary coach at Trinity...his name is on the Trinity field.  Anyway, believe QB Miller executed the "wing T" formation at Delaware.

Bring "Jon" Miller out of retirement!!!! (The "Jon" part is a story for another day!!!)...

HCOF Miller recruited us and we got to see his famous depth chart "behind the curtain" in the football office at ole Hartford State we think in the old field house/gym...pretty funny when he pulled the curtain back and we saw our name up on the HS depth chart....for a HS senior trying to figure out where we were going to spend our next 4 years, that was pretty cool back in the day....we're pretty sure that was his 'schtick" and he did that for all of his recruits...love going down memory lane....at least what we can remember these days...way too many hit to the head wearing a suspension helmet (another trip down memory lane!!!)...

Good luck this weekend against the Ephs, Amh63....they are a very good football team...excellent defense and #2 is a great leader and threat on the ground....if you can force him to throw, you have a shot to salvage a winning season...

Just one random thought for you and the rest of our friends on the Board...we are of the opinion that the rebirth of the Ephs is a possible reason that AMH is down a bit...historically, the LMs and the Ephs have gone after a lot of the same players....our theory is with the demise of the Ephs during the HCOF Kelton-era, the LMs were getting more than their fair share of those student-athletes....now that the Ephs have a competent HCOF in Coach Raymond, order in the universe has been restored and the Ephs are getting back their fair share reducing the LM talent pool and having an impact on their record...curious to hear your thoughts on that theory...

It certainly feels like Coach Raymond is winning the recruiting battle over Coach Mills. A large factor of that perception is the fact that Amherst has been an upperclassmen laden team and experienced group the last few years--14 senior starters last season--so we haven't gotten to see their younger guys play and develop as much as their Williams counterparts. But there is no denying the Ephs have more proven and perhaps promising talent in the pipeline right now.

Colby doesn't run an "Air Raid Offense". They have an Air Raid Package. BIG difference.

With all due respect Sir, we were referring to UBates who made a very big deal about putting in place Coach Lynch's air raid O when HCOF Hall arrived in Lewiston a year and a half ago...the reality is given that QB Costa's skill set (and UBates offensive personnel) is not particularly well suited for that offense, if you watch UBates closely, they employ elements of the air raid at times along with other offensive schemes...Unfortunately, nothing UBates runs offensively is all that successful...

Seems plausible but doesn't every high academic school go after those same players?

This topic is a discussion for the off-season, but in sum, at least as far as the NESCAC schools are concerned, the answer is an emphatic NO...certain schools in this league are recruiting Ivy/Patriot League level student-athletes and are looking in georgraphic areas way beyond New England and the northeast...other schools are not...we believe there is a direct correlation between the league standings and the pond that certain schools are recruiting in...so the answer is no, they are not all going after the same players...

In case anyone wants to watch the feature story on Andrus Field at Wesleyan, "the oldest, longest continuously used college football field in America"....pretty good stuff...best game day experience in the NESCAC, hands-down IOO...great tailgating close to the field with no restrictions, great setting and excellent D3 football, NESCAC-style...

Now it's old news to go along with your penchant for fake news. Your Maine correspondents must be napping. Let me update things.

Coach Hall and OC Patterson came to Bates in the summer of 2018 with the intent of deploying the Air Raid approach. Very early on in their tenure they determined that they inherited a roster which was much more aligned with the triple option scheme than they anticipated. They abandoned the Air Raid philosophy very early in pre season 2018 and there has there has been no talk of it since in Lewiston.

Coach Hall hit the ground running in July 2018 after the Bates AD botched Coach Harrimans departure. Way too late to hire a head coach and expect positive results. Hall has been at Bates for 14 months.  The next incoming class will be his first.

You will continue to see changes in the program and you will see a gravitation to an Air Raid scheme after they bring in the right personnel.

We think your comments are pretty much consistent with what we said about the UBates offense...reality is with Costa under center they should probably be running lots more triple option and RPO than they do...and we concur that UBates did a horrible job on the coaching switch which if our memory serves us, was discussed at length on these boards during 2018...reality check: UBates are the NY Jets of the NESCAC...lots of potential, poor ownership, and they should be better than they are...

2019 Week #9 NESCACMAN Picks

Welcome to Week #9 iin the league where they "pay to play"....4-1 in week #8 including picking Wes to win the Little 3...looks like a chilly final weekend in the NESCAC...enjoy the last weekend of football for 2019...

UBates (Lewiston Campus) at Hamilton College: Winning season on the line for the Conts....UBates coming off their first win in 17 games...they are not playing Bowdoin this week...HAM is not going to let this one get away at home...

Hamilton 31 UBates 14
Point Spread: Hamilton -14.
Weather: Mostly cloudy. High of 40.

Amhurst College at TTUN: Battle for 2nd place in the Little 3...both teams coming off tough loses; AMH to Hartford State and TTUN to Wesleyan in OT...tough match-up for the Lord Mammoths....lack of a consistentency recently in the running game will put a lot of pressure on Eberth/O'Regan to make plays...meanwhile, we think Maimaron/Stola/Vaughn will be too much for the banged up LM defense to handle...we like the Ephs in this one and the LMs end 2019 with a losing record...

TTUN 28 Amhurst 20
Point Spread: TTUN -7.
Weather: Partly cloudy. High of 39.

Wesleyan University at Hartford State: Wes still has a chance to get a share of the NESCAC title with a win and a MID loss to Tufts...Wes coming off 2 straight OT wins against their Little 3 rivals...Wes has come from behind in 4 of their 7 wins and won or tied the game in their last drive 3 of those games...Wesleyan hasn't won in Hartford since 1997...we think this is the year for a Wes win in the Coop in a close one...

Wesleyan 27 Hartford State 23
Point Spread: Hartford State -1
Weather: Partly cloudy. High of 41.

Colby College at Bowdoin College: A 4:30 start for this one....really???...Colby wins another CBB title...

Colby 24 Bowdoin 14
Point Spread: Colby -7.
Weather: Mostly sunny. High of 39.

NESCAC Game of the Week

Middlebury College at Tufts University: MID has a chance to set a league record for wins with 9 and be the first NESCAC team to go 9-0....not an easy road to that 9th win...Tufts typically plays well at home..who will be at QB for the Pants???...should be an interesting game...we expect Tufts to give it all going for the winning season at home...tough to go 9-0...we like Tufts in the upset...

Tufts 28 Middlebury 27
Point Spread: Middlebury -7
Weather: Mostly sunny. High of 42.

NESCACMAN's Picks (winners):
2019 Season: 30-10
2018 Season: 36-9
2017 Season: 35-10
2016 Season: 32-8
2015 Season: 30-10
2014 Season: 30-10
2013 Season: 32-8
Career: 225-65 (.776 winning percentage)

No- your comments about the air raid and the scheme they are running are not accurate.

I can't disagree about upper management however. The Bates AD has no real coaching or playing experience, he's a kind of marketing guy. The good thing is he seems to be supportive and basically stays out of the way of Football operations.

nescacman picks against Ritter's crew for the fifth time this season.
So far it's worked great.  If Midd wins, maybe we'll send you a tshirt as a sign of appreciation.
