Luther and Loras should be a big game Sunday!

I'm telling you, NWU is tough. They have some scrappy players; play very physical; and they play with a certain kind of toughness. The rest of the teams in the IIAC better take them serious. Simpson is still in good position to win the conference. If Loras loses to Luther, they can probably kiss a shot at the conference goodbye.

All I have to say is WOW. Simpson unblemished, NWU taking down Loras and Wartburg....? Lopsided IIAC so far, can't wait for the conference tourney!

Same here, should be exciting

Loras defeated Luther tonight, 2-0. Could they be back in form???

I believe Loras has worked out some of their "distractions" and will be playing much better going forward.  Obviously at this point the wil have to win the Conference Tourney unless some crazy results start showing up the remainder of Conference play.

Good lord, what in the world is going on in this conference? Luther takes down Simpson so Wartburg moves into first place. Luther and Simpson are tied for second, while Nebraska Wesleyan currently is in fourth.

Key matchups this weekend and upcoming next week...

Oct 13 - Wartburg at Luther
Oct 14 - Central at Nebraska Wesleyan // Simpson at Loras
Oct 17 - Loras at Wartburg
Oct 18 - Nebraska Wesleyan at Dubuque
Oct 21 - Wartburg at Simpson
Oct 24 - Loras at Central // Luther at Dubuque

:o NWU moves into third place?? Loras takes down Simpson, and looks to be back on track! Wartburg drops another big game. Luther is now in first!

This has become one wild and wacky season in the IIAC.

Here are my predictions for the remaining games for each team in the IIAC:

Luther will win out on the rest of their season. Remaining Opponents: Coe, Central, and Dubuque. Final record: 11-4-3 (7-1-0).

Simpson should still be in good shape, and should win their last two games. Remaining Opponents: Wartburg and Coe. Final Record: 15-2-1 (6-2).

Nebraska Wesleyan has come out of nowhere this season, and should win out. Remaining Opponents: Dubuque and Buena Vista. Final Record: 11-5-1 (6-2).

Loras got off to a sluggish start, and it's important they win their remaining IIAC games. Remaining Opponents: Wartburg, UW-Whitewater, Coe, St. Scholastica, and Central. Final Record: 10-7 (6-2).

Wartburg has struggled to finish against quality competition, and will continue to do so down the stretch. Remaining Opponents: Loras, Simpson, and UW-Platteville. Final Record: 8-6-3 (3-4-1).

Dubuque imagined a better season this year but they have been too inconsistent. They should win one of their last three remaining IIAC games. Remaining Oppenents: Nebraska Wesleyan, Buena Vista, and Luther. Final Record: 7-7-2 (3-4-1).

Central blew a big opportunity against NWU to turn around their season, and now two of their remaining opponents are some of the best teams in the IIAC. Remaining Opponents: Buena Vista, Luther, and Loras. Final Record: 10-6 (3-5).

Buena Vista picked up their first IIAC win of the season against Coe, but they have three tough games to finish out the year. Remaining Opponents: Central, Dubuque, and Nebraska Wesleyan. Final Record: 4-13-1 (1-7).

Coe is on the losing end once again this year, and it's been a tough season but they can still salvage one win at the end of the year against Cornell. Remaining Opponents: Luther, Loras, Simpson, and Cornell. Final Record: 4-13 (0-8).

Does any disagree? Let me know your thoughts.

Those predictions look about right to me, though as we've seen this season anything is possible.  I watched the Loras-Simpson game this afternoon and was struck by two things. 1) Simpson's Pochop is fun to watch.  Every time he touched the ball I think Loras hearts beat a little faster. He reminded me of UChicago's two strikers from earlier in the season in that way.  2) Loras is playing at a different level than they were earlier this season.  I think they've adapted to a more possession-oriented game and are starting to come together.  I don't think they've started the same lineup twice this season.  Even more than in the past it seems they have a roster full of interchangeable players but in some ways that's been to their detriment early in the season in that they never seemed to come together and gel as a unit.  (And maybe there were some off-the-field issues that have been put behind them, too?)  They still have a problem in that the defense occasionally has some lapses and they can suffer in transition with opposing central attackers and midfielders running at the Loras defense and being given huge amounts of space sometimes.  I was quite impressed with freshman Edin Galvez on the left side today.  That guy is definitely earning his playing time the second half of the season.  Peterson also had a couple spectacular saves in goal though he also mishandled a few crosses as well.

That's the thing though.  From what we've seen so far this year, predictions are difficult at best.  You had UD finishing 1-2.  Looking at the Dubuque schedule you would think BV would be a win.  NWU being in Dubuque might mean a W for UD as opposed to an L if it was played at NWU.  Luther, looks better than the Spartans and I would favor the Norse at either place.  Of course, 1 game might not jumble up the seeding that you had, and the playoff predictions looked reasonable.

That was a big win for Dubuque tonight. This could potentially shake up the standings in the IIAC as far as conference playoff seedings will go. It will most certainly be an interesting regular season finish.

d3soccerfreak

Maybe I doubted Loras a little bit. They came out strong and beat UW-Whitewater 3-0 last night. Big win for the Duhawks tonight!

Loras is starting to look like I thought they would at the beginning of the season.  They put a lot of skill on the field, with perhaps more individual skill top to bottom than I've seen from their top 18 players in the last 9 years of watching.  They are starting to look like a more cohesive group, too, and are playing with confidence.  Obviously, given their miscues in the first half of the season, they have to win the conference tournament to get to NCAAs but if that happens they could be dangerous in November as they are not the same team they were at the start of the season.
