Berg may have the answer to some of their pitching issues. Looks like Adam Manner will be back. He red shirted freshman year with injury. On another note, Derek Hug was named preseason D3 POY by Baseball America. Both should give Berg a solid base to build on.

Prayers from our family to Brandon's family, friends and teammates. Son spent a summer in Chillicothe as a teammate of Brandon's. I will remember him as a true competitor and gentleman.

Another senseless drunk driving tragedy. When will we start cracking down on habitual offenders?

Happy Holidays to one and all!

Congratulations to UMU on a great season, and a solid effort in the championship.  Now that the season is over and everyone has had time to reflect, I am posing a question to the DIII football fans out there who are more knowledgeable than I: Which team in the OAC, other than Mount, is the closest to being able to compete at the national level, and what will it take to get there?

I pose this question because the team that I am most familiar with, Heidelberg, had 2 OAC losses, 1 to B-W in overtime, and a blowout to Mount. An 8-2 record is great for them, they played some fantastic games and laid down some smack of their own, but are obviously not close to being able to compete with the big dawgs.

Berg varsity did play 1 game against Sienna Heights and 1 game against Adrian. Berg beat Sienna Heights 13-1 and lost to Adrian, I believe the score was 7-3. Sienna had beaten Adrian earlier in the day, but I don't know what the score was.

With all of the holes the Berg has to fill due to graduation, several freshman and sophomores played key rolls in both games. Even with it still being early, several youngsters looked very solid. Even though we will be young, I don't think we will have any trouble being competitive.

Berg JV also played both teams' JV squads, and won both games.

I was fortunate to attend the Berg-UMU game Saturday. I think Berg came out fired up and gave Mount a game for a quarter and a half. Several things come to mind: the obviously bigger and stronger Mount offense eventually beat down a game Berg defense. Boys were just plain worn out. I know Berg's passing stats were pretty weak, but I do think the wind played a role. A few of the passes in the 4th quarter were intended for receivers who found openings in the defense, but were knocked down by the wind and found their way to a Mount defender. One of the interceptions was on a pass that went in and out of the Berg receivers' hands.

One thing that Mount did extremely well was to adapt to Berg's weaknesses. I think they scored 4 times with the same pass play.

Please do not interpret any of this as an excuse. It is obvious that Mount was the better team, and in spite of the score, Berg did have some high moments. There were several times that they held Mount's offense to 3-and-out series. I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish in the future.

I don't think Coach Hallet would care too much about moral victories.  The Berg just is not quite at the level that they need to be to compete with Mount, especially with a freshman QB. That being said the Berg is definitely trending in the right direction, I think an 8-2 season would be an obtainable goal for them.

I also think that 8-2 is possible, and would be considered a successful season. Since the rest of the OAC seems to be playing for second place anyway, who are the top contenders for #2? At one time I thought ONU was a lock, but I'm not so sure anymore. With the Berg already losing to B-W, does that mean they could finish #3?

Even though I am a relatively new Berg fan (son is a sophomore), I agree that the Student Princes have a steep hill to climb if they have any hope of beating UMU. I, too would love to see them give the Raiders a game. BTW what would you consider a "moral victory" for the Berg? Lose by less than 3 touchdowns?

For those of you doubting Berg's defense, here are some stats taken from their website. Berg leads DIII with a +2.8 turnover margin. They have caused 22 turnovers so far this season, including 5 interceptions in each of the last 2 games. Four of the interceptions against Muskingum came in the 4th quarter to preserve the win. Granted, turnovers are only one part of the defense, but UMU will have to be very careful protecting the ball.
