"...gain a legendary coach in Regis Scafe."  Easy there, Pres.

Honestly I think TMC could have done better.  Scafe is a veteran and has the advantage of years of experience recruiting the Catholic high schools, but I also don't view him as the guy who takes a program to the next level.  My hunch is TMC stays where they are and possibly even slides back a touch.

Its a huge deal to win the recruiting battle for the Catholic Kids in the GCL for Thomas More.  They have owned the D3 kids from Elder, LaSalle, and Moeller the last 7 years.  With a plethora of TMC alums coaching in the Cincy area -- I think he'll do fine on the recruiting front.

He's had a yearly look at what it takes to scale the Mount Union mountain.  I'm interested to see what changes he makes to attempt to close that gap a bit from Top 25 Program to the Top 10.  I'm not saying he CAN do it, but he'll be given all of the resources he needs to do it.

It was an interesting group of candidates for sure.

K, my friend.  Please forgive me if I missed any conversation regarding this either on this board or your other one.  I was curious as to why Hilvert decided to leave TM and the collegiate game for the h.s. ranks.  Was he tired of the college routine, including recruiting even at the DIII level?  Thanks.

The thing that gives me pause with Scafe is that he had resources at JCU as well as the inside track on the Cleveland area Catholic schools and the end result was a 6-4 program.  Maybe he's learned from that, but I think most JCU fans would say they weren't sad to see him go.  Granted the PAC is a different animal than the OAC so it may not be apples to apples to compare records moving forward anyway.

I'll send you a PM as I'm sure the OAC people don't want to hear anymore about Thomas More.  He left for a really good program (lately, at least).

He'll be fine as long as he doesn't schedule Mount Union.  Unless that legendary coach is looking for another legendary beatdown.

I'd invite Calvin over to the high school to challenge me but he's not allowed within 500 feet of any such institution.

Yes Scafe had a "yearly look at what it takes to scale the Mount Union mountain". However, he is more familiar with running into it, than climbing up it. Since it is the offseason, it is snowing and cold, and I am bored with no football to watch - I put together some numbers of Scafe v. Mount Union.

As a HC his record against Mount stands at 0-16. During this legendary stretch JCU was outscored 752-239, with an average game score of 47-14.9375. In his last 10 legendary years against Mount the average game score was 50.8-7.8. As a member of the JCU coaching staff he went 1-1-20 against Mount. Granted as the LB coach and DC (I think it said he was DC, but as a Defensive Coach) from 1987-1994 JCU went 1-1-4 against Mount. They were outscored 95-79 with an average game score of 15.8-13.16.

I am not saying he can't help TMC out, or that he won't do a fine job - but the only thing that turned JCU into a Top 10 program was Tom Arth's arm. Cheers to all-

I don't really consider Coach Scafe legendary by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't get too hung up over his new school president describing him that way. What else were they supposed to put in the press release? "We hired a coach with an above .600 winning percentage who didn't compete with the very best team in the country, like almost everyone else, over the same stretch of time."

I mean, it's a press release to get the fans interested. Legendary might be a bit of a stretch, but it's not unusual to take that tack when announcing a new hire.

So how long until JC names a new coach? How long will the search take.

Why would JC name a new coach? I assume by JC you mean John Carroll. Tom Arth is the HC and as far as I know he isn't going anywhere....however, the Browns need a QB and even at his age I think he could still sling it better than the rest of their roster. I am not a Browns fan - never have been, never will be (maybe never) but I think they should look at Kevin Burke. They lose nothing by bringing him in as undrafted FA. He can do everything that Johnny can and he has a much better head on his shoulders.

I have a couple friends in the league (seriously) that have said the Browns were looking at Cecil and Pierre for their WR core. Rumor has it Washington is looking at clearing cap space with PG now that they have Jackson, and Jacksonville is not sure about signing Cecil longterm. That would probably bring me around to following the Browns. Pierre out wide and Cecil in the slot...and give a shot to KB...I may wear that hideous color combo on Sunday.

Sorry my ignorance is showing, when Thomas More named Scafe I assumed that he was the current coach at John Carroll.

Scafe came to Thomas More from Notre Dame College where he was most recently an assistant.

Dont get me wrong, Burke is a great Division III QB, but thats  a stretch to compare him to Manziel. The NFL and the SEC is a whole different ballgame. A lot of things will have to go right for Burke to even get looks.
