I know that, but my fingers didn't want to type that for some reason.
Jim Caton, the SID sent that out.
I stand corrected.

The announcement from the Bowdoin AD said that this was the first time in NESCAC history that anyone got three in a row.

Disturbing news from Spain. Aaron Toomey is out at least two months with a fractured skull. This was from an injury suffered at practice.
The surgery went well and he's supposed to be released from the hospital in the next few days. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Wil Hanley, in fact, still plays power forward, or ala-pivot in Español. The Eurobasket site is pretty good at reporting rosters and stats, but not so much on who starts and at what position.
Will has been starting this year and last week was the leading scorer with 18 against heavy favorite Real Madrid. His team lost 90-76.

Hopefully he gets it going soon - like this week. They play every weekend.

NESCAC in Action in Spain. Will Hanley and Aaron Toomey were in Fuenlabrada today for a preseason ACB game.
Aaron is on the Fuenlabrada team in the Silver league, but is on the roster for their top league team until the season begins.
A teammate of Toomey is Andy Panko, another DIII player who has done very well in Spain. He's been the league MVP and was last year's leading scorer.

Mayer, Toomey and Kizel have the same agent, who also reps John DiBartolomeo and Will Hanley in Spain.
Mayer's team is in the Silver league (LEB Plata) and has an affiliation with Gipuzkoa Basket in the ACB, where Hanley played last year and re-signed for this year. Mayer may be able to practice with the ACB team in this preseason. ISB (Mayer's team) just sent two younger guys up for the preseason.

DiBarto played in LEB Plata last year, and his team was promoted to LEB Oro, so he'll be in that league this year.
Nick Hedgepeth, the new assistant at Williams, played in LEB Plata two years ago.

You can read all about it in English on eurobasket.com.

Once upon a time there was a relevant connection between schools and sports teams. In the beginning, the schools formed teams out of the student populations already in attendance, and competed against each other. The students wanted to have some fun and exercise, and teams were formed.

Fast forward to high level D1 today, and the schools, administrators, NCAA, coaches, and other adults make huge money on these students, who go to the school specifically to play the sport, and who get paid in a currency that many of them do not want. Not only do they not want the currency, they are forced to keep up the grades if they are to continue in the school.

Several of our NESCAC alumni have gone on to play in Europe, and it seems to me that the system in place there is much more advantageous to the players than is ours. In Spain, there are four levels of basketball, and there are no "school" teams. There are teams in places where high schools and colleges are, and if you are an athlete and you are a student, you can do both things. You get paid by the team to play your sport, and if you are so inclined, you pay your tuition to go to college. At the low levels you might get a very minimal stipend, comparable to high school or D3 here. If you are a fantastic talent as a 14-16 year old, like Ricky Rubio was, you might get signed by a top league team and develop in the lower leagues until you're ready to move up, which he did at 15. All throughout the leagues, you get paid more if you're a better talent - it isn't a flat rate.

The key is that the team makes money, the players make money, and the colleges teach and graduate students. There actually are a couple of schools which sponsor teams – one in the top league. In my opinion, there's no need for the two to be connected at all, especially when they are operating as minor leagues for the NBA and the NFL.

The foregoing is all well and good, but with the amounts of money in the hands of the powerful, the chances of it changing very much are minimal. The NCAA and colleges aren't about to hand over the pot of gold until they are forced to.

Regarding his potential...  I'd agrue that you're making the wrong observation.  You're focused on his short comings; not his progression.  Swords development since freshman year has been astounding.  Even last year he played less than 15 minutes a game was in frequent foul trouble and had a very limited offensive contriubtion.  This is a guy who started playing basketball late and is just learning the game.   A lot came together for him this last year and his play has blossomed.  Could his game get better....yes certainly but if I were an opposing coach I would pray that he spent his summer doing something other than learning to hit an 6-8 ft turn around jumper.

Tough to focus on anything but shortcomings when the sample size is one game.

I believe that the expectations for John Swords are solely due to his height. If he were six inches shorter and had 16 and 16 and 5, he'd be getting a lot of credit for the performance. But people see a seven foot guy and expect him to have all the skills that the 6'6" guy has and when he doesn't have them, the lack gets characterized as "shortcomings". He must have done some things pretty well to get 16/16/5.
And as P'Bearfan said, he has improved drastically over the last couple of years.

If John had the footwork and the touch and the killer instinct to go with his physical size, he'd likely have gotten recruited hard by D1, and at this point, the NBA might be calling.

My take is that this year's Bowdoin team had substantially the same results as the team has had for the past 5 years. The difference this year was that they won all the games before the NESCAC season began, while in the previous five years, they lost either 2 or 3 of those games, and quite a few of those losses were by one or two points. This year they won those games, sometimes by close margins, like the Bates game.
The team's record in the league was 6-4 this year, but 5-4, 4-5, 3-6, 5-5, 5-5 the previous years. Not very different.
Their record in the last few games of the season: 4-3, 2-5, 1-5, 3-3, 2-4 and 2-4 this year. Again, not very different.
Overall records: 17-9, 13-12, 14-10, 17-8, 14-10, and this year 19-5.
The difference was not losing the close early games. Had they lost a couple of those, there would have been no expectations or Top 25 rankings, and the ending record might have been 17-7 instead of 19-5.
I don't believe that this year's team was all that different from the last few years, but a couple of close wins rather than close losses can change perceptions and certainly raise expectations.
So the answer to OG's question, I believe, is choice 1, and a bit of 2. In previous years, they played Wes and Con the last week of the season - this year, they started with them. I don't think 3 was the problem.
Agree that the returning team should be as good or better, especially if Bryan Hurley can get to 100% and John Swords continues to develop.

Now that Williams has beaten Wesleyan the three are tied with 4 wins, each going 1-1 vs. the other two.
Tiebreaker is wins vs. top 4. Colby beat Amherst, and now Tufts has beaten Bowdoin. Wesleyan is out.
Tufts beat Colby, so Tufts is #7 and Colby is #8.
