Another fun note from Naperville last night: Connor Raridon moved into North Central's top ten in career assists. He has 205 for his career, and the school record is 273. The way he's playing, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he tops that list by the end of the season. And he still has two more years of eligibility left after this one...

North Central 92
Albion           78

This game was actually not even as close as the final score as, over about the final 1:30, Albion tallied 8 of the game's last 9 points after NCC's third quintet had been inserted.

The Cardinals two pre-season All-Americans, Connor Raridon and Alex Sorenson, really carried the night in this one, which saw NCC Head Coach Todd Raridon become only the 13th active D3 coach to earn his 500th victory. Raridon ranks 45th in wins in the history of college basketball among coaches with at least 10 years of experience at the Division 3 level.

* Connor Raridon - 36 points (12/15, 12/13), 8 assists, 4 Rebounds, 2 Steals.
Connor has become one of North Central's two de facto PGs this season and, in that role he has been racking up assists in bunches. Last night's 8 helpers actually vaulted him into 8th place on NCC's career assist list. His 36 points are the most by a North Central player in a single game since Reid Barringer '10 (NCC's all time leader in 3FG Made) scored 44 points vs Rockford on 12/30/09.

* Alex Sorenson - 24 points (9/15), 7 Rebounds, 3 Assists.

* Matt Cappelletti - 11 points, 6 Rebounds.

* Aiden Chang - 3 Assists, 5 Steals. Aiden's 5 steals matched a single game school record.

The Cardinals shot a season high 61.7% (73.1 in the 2 half) and hit a season high 28/35 FTs.

Not an unexpected victory by the Cardinals who need to keep doing what they are capable of and, frankly, need to keep doing in light of their early season 4 losses, including 2 in conference.

This is more a matter of curiosity --- 273 as the school career assist record seems really low.  I compiled the school record holder at each of the conference schools.

I've fixed it for you, newCCIWfan:

Augustana   Drew Boster (1970-73)   559
Carroll   Nate Drury (2004-07)   402
Carthage   Steve Djurickovic (2008-11)   649
Elmhurst   Eric Stark (1996-99)   375
Illinois Wesleyan   Adam Dauksas (2003-06)   584
Millikin   Adam Provance (1996-99)   425
North Central   Adam Teising (2003-06)   273
North Park   Michael Thomas (1978-81)   701
Wheaton   Randy Pfund (1971-74)   478

(This is not a well-known fact, but the real reason why the CCIW would not accept Benedictine's bid to join the league was because BU does not have a career assists leader in men's basketball named "Adam".)

Augustana has quietly moved 6'5 180 (and of course,really long) forward Carson Frakes to the varsity squad.  He's appeared in the last two games averaging 15 minutes 5 pts and 5 Reb.  Frakes comes out of the Illinois small school powerhouse Rockridge program near the Quad Cities where he garnered third team all state honors averaging a double double his senior season.

He's probably most known for his 3/4 court shot that went viral to win the state semi final game in 2016 vs Hales Franciscan.  Frakes seems to have a nice feel for the game and really tracks the ball as it leaves the shooters hands and seems to be a real ball hawk putting his slender frame in positions to rebound against players who he is giving up 20-30 pounds to.  IMHO, he will need to hit the weight room, but being as slender and smart as he seems he should do just fine.  Now, all being said, his first time at the Varsity level were non conference games against Rockford and Central.  Conference games are a whole different animal.  Look forward to his development.

Final from the Don Lane Classic in Lexington, KY:

North Park 66
Guilford 56

Billy Kirby: 22 pts
Colin Lake: 20 pts
Matt Szuba: 16 pts, 8 rebs
Matt Mohr: 4:1 a:to, 5 blks
Jack Gurvey: 3:0 a:to

Down by eight in the first couple of minutes in the second half, the Vikings went on a 22-9 run over a six-minute span to take a lead that they would never relinquish. Freshman forward Matt Szuba was the spark, as he scored all 16 of his points in the concluding stanza. It was particularly gratifying to see Billy Kirby, whose three-point shooting thus far this season has made Spencer Peterson of Wheaton look like Steph Curry, go 4-5 from beyond the arc, as NPU as a whole shot a brisk 13-27 (48%) from downtown while also managing a +4 in the rebounding category -- a combo of rebounding domination and good outside shooting that they have not shown much of in recent seasons.

Solid win by the Vikes, but tomorrow's opponent -- Emory & Henry, which is 8-0  -- will be a much tougher customer.

North Central point guards have traditionally been gunners ready, without hesitation, to throw up a closely contested shot while often being oblivious to an open man. 😵 😏  :)

Millikin 72
Aurora 70

Wild finish at the Griz, as the Spartans stormed back from a nine-point deficit late and had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but AU star Marcus Myers was called for a charge on a layup attempt with one second left.

The Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time Big Blue came away with a win, yes. But conclusions arrived at are always interesting.  FG again were even, but AU had 14 more FGA.  MU was over 50% on FG and 3s, but AU made more 3s, utilizing the "blind squirrel" offense and finding more acorns.  11-33 for AU, vs 7-12 for Millikin.  Millikin outrebounded Aurora by 9, but out-turnovered AU by 12; mostly the Blue bigs-19 RB/14 TO getting them high and then giving them back low, lol.  But these are numbers; the story of the game was Millikin's Jekyll and Hyde defense.  When Millikin was getting behind, they were playing man-to-man.  Allegedly.  Aurora got one driving layup that was the least defended I've ever seen; less defended than warm-ups.  Millikin got their leads playing that 3-2 zone they used the last 10 minutes to lockdown their win at Webster.  Again, the final minutes were agonizing because Millikin seemed to be playing "not-to-lose", and we all know how THAT goes  :)  Next game: 12/28 in Decatur vs Finlandia U, led by Jean Sibelius

Go back and read the board from a few days ago, Mark. I think you'll figure out the joke.

Carthage drained the sap out of Southern Vermont tonight, 86-63, to go 2-0 on the team's Miami trip. Jordan Thomas was sensational from beyond the arc, where he went 8-10 en route to a 30-point performance. Brad Kruse had 15 and 7, Brad Perry had 13 and 8, Kamal Shasi had 7 boards to go with his sweet 9:2 a:to ratio, and freshman skyscraper Sean Johnson pulled down eight boards and had seven blocks.

Since he was the prime instigator of that kerfluffle (over my gentle poke which he took as a gross insult to Coach Raridan), I'm sure he caught your joke (but seems rather humor impaired).

Gregory Sager

Frankly, I'd be more insulted that you keep spelling the coach's name wrong. But that's just me. ;)

The nice week that the CCIW has had thus far has bumped the non-con record up to 41-21 (.662).
