Title: Longest Home Winning Streak
Post by: John Gleich on December 01, 2005, 12:51:09 AM
There was a thread about the longest home winning streak, but it must have gotten lost with the changeover...

So here's a new one!

This is just a general comment about DIII winning streaks - I think DIII streaks are more impressive than DI streaks, because for most teams that have long winnging streaks, they include a few NCAA tournament games.  In DI a team may have a long streak, but never have to put the streak on the line in the Sweet 16, or for a chance to get to the final four.  Illinois Wesleyan used to have a good streak going, and for a long time their only loss in the Shirk Center was in the tournament - to the eventual national champion, so who knows how long it would have been.  And I know this is not a streak, but IWU's record in the Shirk Center is 135-12, which has included a few pretty nice streaks.

In 2000, the William Smith College Herons had an 80 game home win streak snapped by the St. Lawrence University Saints. It was the longest active home win streak in all of college hoops men and women at that time, and only eight games shy of the NCAA women's record.

York College (PA) currently has a 27-game home streak. Does anyone know if this is the longest active streak or is there another one that is longer?

That's just why I started the thread... to find long winning streaks!

UWSP lost their last home game, and their school record 28 game winning streak was snapped.

I've actually been impressed with how they've played this year... They're not where they need to be defensively, and they're far, far too dependant on 3 point shooting (no inside game at all) but, a team that plays 4 freshmen more than 16 minutes per game is a half game out of the conference lead!

And even though this is a down year for Point, the future sure looks bright!
Title: Re: Longest Home Winning Streak
Post by: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on January 31, 2006, 08:54:39 AM

I didn't realize they were playing so many freshmen; I think you do indeed have some good things to look forward to.
Title: Re: Longest Home Winning Streak
Post by: John Gleich on January 31, 2006, 12:56:39 PM
Yep... two seniors, one junior, a sophomore, and four freshmen are their top 8... Coach Semling has admitted that he perhaps has relied too heavily on these players, especially the upperclassmen (Senior Bauer, Junior Krull, and Sophomore Hicklin are all averaging 33.5+ minutes per game)... but with so many young kids, where's the depth going to come from?

Point was hurt by a few guys who decided not to come out this season... Mike Prey, who, along with Bauer spelled Kalsow and Maus throughout the season, decided not to come out for his senior year.  Brett Hirsh, who actually started 13 games as a redshirt Freshman two years ago and would have been a Junior started the year with the team but is no longer on the roster (I'm not at all sure what happened with this situation), and Brad Kalsow, younger brother of All-American Jason Kalsow decided to play football this season instead of basketball.

Many had Prey and B. Kalsow penciled in as starters for this season.  From purely a defensive point of view, these guys had been with the program for 4 years and one year, respectively... but they had experience, and they'd played in college games.  This can't be understated.

To their credit, UWSP's freshmen have played quite remarkably.  Pete Rortvedt has started all 19 games, is averaging 10.2 pts/game, and is hitting on 46% of this 3 pt. attempts, which is 4th in the conference.  UWSP also leads the country in free-throw percentage.  That's huge.  This team also doesn't beat themselves... they're leading the conference, averaging just 10.6 TO's per game.  That's just a half a TO/game more than last year's team.

The difference is the defense.  Last year's Point defense lead the country, giving up just 59.6 pts/game.  This year, they're holding teams to 65.4 pts/game.  Is that bad?  No, it's 64th in the country.  But it's 7th in conference.  And when you realize that 5 of Point's 7 losses have been by 6 points or less, then it REALLY makes a difference...!

Another major difference from the teams of the past (and not just the last two years... the rememberable past, 10-15+ years) Point has always had a credible inside presence.  Thise does not exist this year.  Point was 10th in the country in field goal percentage, and lots of that had to do with the outside/inside give and take (and that Jason Kalsow and Eric Maus and crew were great around the basket).  This year they're averaging 45%... again, not bad, but it's 5th in conference, and not even in the top 100 nationally.  If you take 50 shots per game, that's an extra 2-3 makes per game... that's between 4-9 points per game.  Suddenly, they're in 6 of the 7 games for sure, and possibly in all 7!  But Point doesn't have this credible threat... The only player that posts with any regularity is Krull, who's just a stud, at 6'4", he's quick enough that you have to guard him with a guard, but he can post and make something happen against smaller players.

This is great against non-conference opponents, however, who's biggest guys are 6'5"... but in the WIAC, there are two teams with 7 footers, and the norm is post men in the 6'7" to 6'8" range... even Jonny Krull can't make a living against guys like that.

All told, like I said, I've been very happily surprized with how this team has done.  I just wish that they had a true inside presence... then we might be comparing this team to the Point teams of the last few years.

The numbers aren't too large yet, being the first season, but the Devos Center is currently undefeated for both Hope's men and women. Albion men visit on Saturday the 4th and the women have Calvin at home still, but the new digs have been friendly so far.

They must have brought in that UnderArmor guy for a lockerroom cheer of "we must protect this house!"

Hope men survived their last tough regular season home test. I believe that's 13-0 in the DeVos for them now.

Additional information gained just word of mouth (the website isn't good for verifying JV information) at Saturday's game that apparently when the men's and women's JVs have played their home games in the DeVos (it isn't every home game), neither of them have lost. The building has yet to see defeat thus far.

I'd say there's clearly a home court advantage!  ... 'course, it doesn't hurt that the team's good, too, but...   ;)

13 is one less than Illinois Wesleyan won in their inaugural season in the Shirk Center.  They lost to Machester at home in the NCAA's, but won their next 46 games before falling to Benedictine, in the Shirk's 5th season.  That's a heck of a record... and from the sounds of it, DeVos may be the same way!!

The team/teams are the main reason.  DeVos is a very comfortable facility for fans and players.  The only thing I'd find intimidating about it is that it looks and feels like nothing else you'll see anywhere in D3.

Its an incredible place but the tight confines of some other D3 gyms I've been in can be much more difficult to play in.

......of course I've missed the 3 largest crowd games at DeVos so what do I know.  ;D

But in the DeVos center, are you not encouraged to sell your tickets to others so they can sell more and kick back to you so you can sit in better seats, and so on...

Accidentally posted this in the Best Facility thread but meant it for here. The DeVos fieldhouse made it through its first season undefeated for both men and women as neither managed to pull a sectional to Holland this weekend.

"The NCAA announcement brings to a close the first season of basketball at Hope's new DeVos Fieldhouse where the two teams went undefeated and combined for a 32-0 record (18-0 by the men, 14-0 by the women)."

I was hoping to see that sectional final scotsbrod, but too bad the Scots couldn't hold up their end for us. I guess there is at least still the chance for one of my teams to take down Witt this week.

So does that mean Hope's 18 in a row is the longest active home winning streak?
Title: Re: Longest Home Winning Streak

Hope's home winning streak is 22 in a row, dating back to a loss to Albion last year.  That is, if the d3hoops.com records are correct.

Mississippi College is at 33 dating back to the 03-04 season at home.

Can anyone compete with those right now?

Don't know why you would think that. The games are bold and there's no (n) next to them.

Title: Re: Longest Home Winning Streak

The Hope College Dutch (women) have a 17-0 winning streak at home and are undefeated in the DeVos Fieldhouse.  With the recent road victory over Wheaton -the only team to defeat them last year - their current winning streak was extended to 35 - 0.

The team's ability to retain their composure in close games has been key to their success.  They have kept the record intact with a last second two point and a three point overtime victory this year.  Last year they won five games by 4 points or less, including two three point victories (Washington and Scranton) during the playoffs.

Although it can be dangerous to look too far ahead, with Tri-State and North Central next up on the schedule it seems likely that the winning streak can be extended to 37.  Both of these games are on the road.

Does any college bb team (in any division) have a longer current winning streak?

VA Wesleyan has a 17 game home winning streak dating back to their loss to Hamden-Sydney on November 30th of 2005 (which was also their last loss of any kind that season).

Amherst is riding a 14 game home winning streak right now as well.  They last lost to Trinity (CT) on January 14th of this year.

Lincoln hasn't lost at home since they played D2 Bowie State on Dec 9th 2004.  However, that only amounts to a 19 game home winning streak as Lincoln spent most of last season on the road.  They've got a good shot at extending this streak at least into the post-season this year as they have only seven home games remaining the entire season and only one of them (Rowan) appears to be all that difficult.

Hope women currently have a 19 game HOME winning streak and a 43 game OVERALL streak going into tonights game at Olivet.  Have not lost since DeVos Fieldhouse opened.

Hope's men have won 30 straight HOME games going back to January 12, 2005.  Hope hosts Albion tonight, the last team to beat Hope in Holland.

They've won 24 in a row at the DeVos and won their last 6 at the Holland Civic Center.

Wow that is an amazing streak Bowdoin has going, I liked the list of close call's to, sometimes forgotten when talking about long streaks.

Does the NCAA keep track of d3 winning streaks?  I would like to see the men's and women's all-time streaks and maybe we could compile the home win streaks ourselves.

So what are we left with?

Bowdoin and Hope both had long streaks end recently.

It seems like the Scranton women are at 72 games right now without losing at home.  Is that right or did I miss one?  Their last loss was an OT loss to Desales February 15th 2001?  I'm counting playoff and tournament games played at home in this.  That's pretty impressive in it's own right, no?

It seems Southern Maine women are at 59 and counting as well, their last home loss coming to Bowdoin, December 2nd of 2003.

Stevens Point women appear to be at 22 right now.

On the men's side:

Lincoln is at 23 straight at home; VA Wesleyan is at 19 and Amherst is at 17.

The Caltech women's team is currently riding a home court win streak that has now reached one consecutive game.  This ties their record for longest home winning streak in at least the past 5 seasons and probably in program history (dates back to 1995).  The Beavers go for the outright record next Thursday against La Verne (9-3).  ;D

I'm told by the folks at Scranton that the home win streak is 55, not 72...looks like USM is the new leader, unless anyone else has info they want to share.

I got 55 regular season home victories, but if you include the conference tournament and NCAA tournament home games, I still get to 70.  Maybe we can figure out when their last home loss actually was to settle this.

Only took me about five minutes of looking through that great site, D3hoops.com, to find out when their last home loss was.

Perhaps I'm missing something...but, based on the games you have listed...I'm seeing 56 & hopefully counting.

I'm a Scranton hater, and even I got 56.  Good to see you included MAC-F and NCAA postseason games, which includes the finest women's game I've ever seen, a 49-43 win over Bowdoin on St. Patrick's Day weekend of '05.

And as much as I'd like to groan about Mike Strong running up the score on my Lady Colonels, I can't.  It was 35 - 8 at halftime.  Letting up, we got to a final score of 63-23.

The streak is now at 56. The Montclair State game was a neutral site and should be struck from the record.

Women

Southern Maine - 59
Scranton - 56

Men

Hope --32
Lincoln - 23
VA Wesleyan - 20
Amherst - 19

I hope I counted these right.

That is only in the PAC....  What about next year?  If they continue to win or lose at home in the MAC it will be a different story unless you group all the wins together despite the quality of the conference.

The Mississippi College men have now won 28 straight games in the "Golden Dome". Their only loss in their last 47 home games was an 84-82 overtime loss to Wesley College (MS) to open last season.

The Howard Payne women current streak is at 37 consecutive wins in the Brownwood Coliseum. They currently have the longest overall win streak in the nation at any collegiate level. The home might be the longest active as well be I would need to do some research to confirm.

Is there any site that lists the longest home court winning streaks (men or women) in division 3??  The Western Connecticut women haven't lost at home since February of 2009 and was wondering where that ranked in terms of active home court winning streaks.  Based on the archives it looks like the streak is at 31 going into tomorrow night's game against Mount St. Mary.  Obviously not as high as Amherst's 49, but I'd have to guess 31 straight is good enough for top 5 or top 10.

As far as I know, there isn't a site that lists home court winning streaks.  I think it would be this one if one existed!

There may have been one at one time here... but it's a pretty work-intensive proposition.  This board is a place for people to talk about their teams... but even then, how often should somebody post?  After each and every game?  Only at the beginning/end of the season?  Only when the streak is broken?

That would be incredibly hard for someone to keep track of in and of themselves... if all teams played on Wednesdays and Saturdays, it might be easier... but teams play every day of the week and the list would theoretically change on a daily basis.

Looks like the Western Connecticut's women's streak is over.  They suffered a tough loss at the buzzer last night to Mount St. Mary, 60-58.

The first place that I would look would be WashUStL run of national championships in early 2000 era.

The Bears went 43-0 from 1997-98 to 2000-01 with 9-2 in 1996-97 and 13-1 in 2001-02.

The Bears went 14-0 in 2002-03.

They won the first 13 in 01-02... UWSP's women went to Wash U and beat the Bears on the way to the National Championship.

UWSP's man, fwiw, have a 24 game home winning streak on the line tonight as they host Oshkosh.

I just looked at a couple of the top teams.  I can't find a Whitworth home loss since Jan 16, 2009.

That's 41 in a row by my count, but there could be a couple of unmarked neutral site games in there that I missed.

Likely the record is more than Point's right now.

Can anyone think of a team that would have a longer home winning streak active?

Yes, after a home loss against Whitewater on 1/27/10 (their only home loss that year), Point won the last 8 at home, including the last 4 during the tournament... Then they won all 13 last season and have won all three games thus far this year.  Had they beaten WW in 2010, it would only be 35 currently... so Whitworth would still be tops, I think.

Whitworth wouldn't have any home playoff games with the exception of NWC tournament games (if you consider that a playoff...) or 1st/2nd round in the NCAA tournament b/c they haven't hosted a regional.

Whitworth has won 41 straight in Spokane. 72-3 at home over the last 6 years.

Whitworth has hosted Chapman, CMS, and Occidental in the last 4 years in first and second round tourney games. The popular NCAA thing to do is giving Whitworth a bye and sending up the SCIAC v Chapman (who is now in the SCIAC) sacrificial lamb...i mean winner...to The Fieldhouse. But yeah, I'm pretty sure they've only played 4 home playoff games during this streak so nearly all of the wins are against NWC opponents.

UWSP fell at home yesterday to UW River Falls, ending the (believed to be) nation's longest home winning streak at 29 games.

Is Amherst tops now?  Or did they lose at home (in which case it would be Middlebury, I think...)

Birmingham-Southern had a 43-game home streak snapped when they lost in the SCAC semis over the weekend ... tho since they were transitioning from D1 to D3 and not officially D3 until this year, that probably wouldn't have counted.  Irrelevant now ... http://www.bscsports.net/sports/mbkb/2011-12/releases/20120225b11s5k
