I believe it was 3 years ago, when Oshkosh was preseason number 1 in the nation. ... But hey, I believe they beat some team from Stevens Point, and Whitewater to go to the Elite 8 that year. But besides that, they were the "man" in the conference that year, due to the preseason ranking.

Mr. Downtown, you might want to get your facts straight before you talk about a team being "the man."  UWSP won conference running away in '02-'03, with a record of 14-2, winning the league by 3 games.  And sure, Oshkosh may have been the preseason #4 pick, but according to that preseason ranking, they should have ENDED as the #4 team in the country... they didn't, they lost in the elite 8.  Heck, they weren't even the best team in the conference, or the second best team.  They were 4 games behind Point, and even though they made it farther than Point in the NCAA's, Point's opponent still made it farther (so  :P).

Any way you slice it, you really don't have history (at least recent history) on your side.  Point has dominated the conference the last three seasons.  Any team that would step up to challenge them in that would be travelling on uncharted ground.

Gosh I wish the season started sooner.

Downtown,

I'm a bit cofused by your "three years ago it was Oshkosh" remark, regarding them begin "the man" (or, "men", as it were).  If I recall, UWSP has won five of the last six conference championships over the last six seasons (their only year not hoisting the conf. champ. banner being the year they hoisted that nifty banner with the words "NCAA CHAMPIONS" written on it).  They won three years ago (and four, five, and six years ago, as well as last, like I've said) TIED with Whitewater and Point.  Point lost in a second round home game to Gustavus Adolphus, who lost in the National Championship game after leading by 8 with three minutes to go.  Did Oshkosh make a nice run?  Sure they did.  But Point was the team to beat that year, as they have been since taking the reins from Platteville as the dominant conference AND national power from Wisconsin.

So, again, I think your comments are misguided about three years ago (and I also think that if Point had managed to get by GAC, then we could very easily be talking about the NCAA 3-peat instead of the repeat... but that's past, so I guess we'll never know).  I also think that your comments about this season are a bit off as well.  We've seen for the past 5 years a team from Whitewater that is talented and can score but 1) has a hard time defending for a whole 40 minutes 2) has faltered at the end of the year.  Sure, they won a share of two championships with Point, but they sat home in March, same as Point, both seasons.  I'm not really sure why these teams have faltered.  Perhaps it is because the individuals tend to be great (read as "better") athletes than their opponents, so they try and do everything by themselves rather than trusting in their teammates (read this one as the "NBA syndrome"... though the NBA has been recovering the last few years), but I think that Whitewater is in the same boat as LaX as being the team that "needs to earn it."

But, seriously, in this league, talk is talk.  Whoever wins the conf title will definately "need to earn it" thought hard work and perserverance and that banner they hoist up to the rafters is one with true meaning and value.  I look forward to another great WIAC season, and as much as I love watching WIAC football, I wish that the basketball opener was this Saturday instead.

Hmm... I recall two years ago in the WIAC opener at Quandt, the season favorite, River Falls, failed to score 40 points in a 56-38 drubbing...

Don't count your chickens before they hatch, Titan.  Point has won 7 out of the last 9 meetings.

... Breakers (Melzer's team) beat the Bullets.  They didn't keep stats, because it was a preseason game, so they didn't keep stats, but Melzer was the leading scorer, and he probably had about 30...

There's your synopsis  :)

The world's largest basketball is located at the Women's Basketball National Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn.

Now there's something wrong with that... the Men's Basketball National Hall of Fame should be bigger, just the like guys' ball is bigger than the girls' ball in real life!

Does anyone here know about the merger with the NIIC and the LMC?  There was talk about it last season, but I hadn't heard anything official...

Diplomat,

If you "applaud" a post, the person gets +1 karma.  If you "smite" someone, then they get -1 karma.

Will he be running up and down and across the court every night ? ???

I don't recall Coach Bennett running up and down the court when his teams were WINNING IN SALEM, something none of the other coaches have had the chance to do, except for Coach Semling.

I think a top 25 may be a bit premature.

Thus why I said "Or a top 10, or a top 5."  The reason why I even mentioned a top 25 is the basic fact that the thread is "Top 25 Talk," and I figured I'd at least PRETEND to try and stay on topic, even if the thread hadn't been posted in since March.

And I don't need any more information about SP's graduating Seniors... I know them personally and follow SP, the WIAC, and D3 Basketball extensively.

If I had to put out a top 5 for next seaon (and yes, it might be a bit premature, but I figure hey, I'm bored, and it might spark some more conversation), here's what it would look like:

(this is also based on a bit of info that you guys just provided)

1) IWU
2) UW Oshkosh
3a) Wittenberg
3b) Wooster
5) Amherst

Point should still be in the top 15, and I think York should as well.  Like I said before, they return quite a few from last year's team, and they've gotten a taste of the top and it should make them hungrier for more.

I think Oshkosh is a legit top 5 team.  They're the last team to beat UWSP, took them to the wire in the conference tournament, return almost everyone, and should improve even more this year.

OS, ftp is a "file transfer protocol" or something like that... and it's a system for transfering files (with a name like that, who would have known?!?)

Cowboy,

As far as the site-seeing is concerned...  If you head west on Highway 10, you can see... lots of cows.  If you go east, you'll see... yep, more cows.  If you head south, you'll see some cranberry marshes, with a few cows mixed in.  There are woods to the north (aptly dubbed the "Northwoods") and, if you do drive, watch out for deer, running across the roadbecause they've repopulated since last year's hunting season.

On a more serious note... if you're looking for a good meal, check out the Hilltop Bar and Grill.  It'll probably be pretty crowded, being a game day and all, but it's good, as an Pointer fan will tell you (Oh, that's on Highway 10, heading East out of town, before you get to Interstate 39.  It, appropriately, is located at the top of a hill  ;D ).

For after-game festivities, Stevens Point has many fine drinking establishments.  Lots of people go to Partners, which is pretty close to the stadium... because it's close to the stadium.  At night, check out "the Square" in downtown SP.  There are a whole bunch of bars with reasonably priced... beverages... that should make your Stevens Point experience a good one.

And it'll help you drown away your sorrows when Point beats you!  :P
(Sorry, couldn't help myself.  It really should be a great game.  And I really DO hope you have a good time in Point, there really isn't THAT much to see, at least I don't think so, and anybody else, from Point, or that's BEEN to Point and looked for something to do, feel free to interject, rebutt, add, etc, etc to what I've written ;)).

Is that merge official now?  I remember conversations about it last year, but nothing had been finalized...

So, I guess the "Way to go out on a limb"  comment (with 5 stars) means that everyone else knew all along that he was going to retire?

Stoutguy, if you'll notice, the new forum system does not rate on a "star" system like the last...  It rates by karma... you either applaud (+1) or smite (-1).  Pat Coleman simply gets those 5 bright stars because he's Pat Coleman, and without him, there'd be no D3hoops.com

I wish the best of luck to Coach Bennett and his family, as well as Coach Semling and the rest of the Pointer team.  I really think that this Point team is going to surprize people by how good they really are (if the two-time defending National Champs can EVER really surprize anyone...)  Most people wrote them off long ago simply because of the core group of seniors that graduated, and the great majority of the rest will write them off now because Coach Bennett is no longer at the helm, but this team is still just that... a TEAM... and the players on this team have contributed to and celebrated two straight National Titles.  Will somebody else have to step up and score?  You'd better believe it.  The top 3 scorers all graduated.  But I think we got a hint at the future last year when Tamaris Relerford went down in the Lawrence game.  The well at UWSP has not run dry and there are players who are MORE than capable to step in, step up, and fill the shoes left by the graduating class.  After Relerford went down with the broken hand, I heard Coach Bennett remark "Someone's misfortune is someone else's opportunity."  And Steve Hicklin stepped up and went above and beyond expectations.  Well, the only "misfortune" is 4 open starting spots and an open slot for the 6th man.  I think that there are players to step in to those rolls and help UWSP stay competitive on the conference AND the national stage in the near future.

Anybody have a top 25 yet (or even top 10, or top 5?)  I think it's pretty safe to say that my two-time defending champs probably WON'T be ranked #1 in the country to start the year (though I think they deserve it until it is taken from them)... heck, they probably won't even be picked first in the WIAC, though that isn't necessary for Point to actually WIN the WIAC (Five conf championships in six years, two years ago was the only one they didn't win, and they lost that in the last game of the season) Point was only picked to win the WIAC this past season, I believe.

Over on the WIAC board, the talk has been about Oshkosh, seeing that they return every player who played meaningful minutes.  York (PA) is coming off of their 4th place finish, and, though they didn't have a great showing at the final four, they now have some tradition to build off of, and I believe they return a lot of their players.

So I've seen a couple of people who have thrown together how they think the league will filter out... what do the rest of you think?

... or, if it's too early... there's gotta be SOMETHING that we can talk about!

Which WIAC teams will be ranked in the preseason?
