^^^ Very unfortunate. Now I'm interested to see if Northland College achieves its $12 million fundraising goal to avoid closure. Don't have long to wait. April 3rd is their stated deadline.

^^^ Interesting. Thanks.

Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on March 26, 2024, 10:05:10 AMI suspect annually entering the portal will be pretty routine for the top players in the division going forward.  Nothing wrong with checking out the offers available and it gives them leverage at their current school.

What kind of leverage?

^^^ Kind of funny, I agree. Notable, too, that they pronounced LeTorneau (also a D3 school) LeTorNAY.

Stumbled across this a few minutes ago:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/news/2024-nfl-draft-small-college-prospects-to-watch-at-pro-days-including-a-qb-who-also-stars-on-special-teams/

"David Wallis, WR, Randolph-Macon
Wallis (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) was excellent down at the College Gridiron Showcase, and what stood out to me the most while I was there was his tremendous burst and acceleration. Then when I went back and studied his game, it was obvious that this kid is a legit speed demon. Wallis averaged 21.5 yards per catch during his career. He was a legit deep threat for the Yellow Jackets, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him crack 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash on the pro day circuit. With his kickoff return experience, combined with his speed, expect him to be in an NFL training camp this summer."

Quote from: Macon on March 17, 2024, 10:31:37 AMAs to my Jackets, a great season.  Never thought that they'd be a sweet sixteen team, so huge congrats to the players and coach.  Did not see the Calvin/RMC game, but seems that RMC simply ran out of gas, and could not control their 6-10 center, which concerned me going into the game.

Losing three senior starters, RMC needs to recruit some size.  Did see on X that they have a 6-6 guard coming.  With the current freshman and soph classes, the Jackets will be strong again next year.

Yes, Calvin's Jalen Overway was too much to handle. Most players of his size and ability usually wind up at D2 or D1, though they don't all have success at those levels. These days it's more typical for a guy his size playing at D3 to not be as skilled as he is. Ben Strong and Tyler Sanborn were exceptions, but that was more than a decade ago. Remember Hunter Fromang at RMC? Greenville University in Illinois had a 7' 1" freshman this season who didn't see a minute of varsity action.

I agree with both observations -- RMC needs to get taller but also has good returning talent. Next season may be the more typical "rebuilding" year now that Mbangue, Coble and Johnson are graduating. Mbangue and Coble both started on the national championship team in 2022. Mbangue has been the glue this season. He will be tough to replace. It will be a very different team moving forward.

Good luck to Hampden-Sydney this afternoon. Hoping the Tigers bring a third consecutive championship to Virginia.

RMC schedule announced: https://rmcathletics.com/news/2024/3/12/rmc-football-releases-2024-schedule.aspx

The accompanying article says this: "In 2024, each ODAC school will play one conference opponent twice. RMC drew Washington and Lee..."

Curious to know what is behind this decision, as opposed to schools having three non-conference games.

^^^ Yes, sad and terrible news indeed. This is the third SLIAC related institution to close in this decade, MacMurray and Iowa Wesleyan being the others.

Several other D3 institutions are trying to hang on. Northland College in Ashland, WI just announced an urgent fundraising effort to raise $12 million by April 3rdto avoid closure: https://www.northland.edu/fundraising-appeal/ Birmingham Southern College has been seeking a loan from the state of Alabama to remain viable: https://legiscan.com/AL/bill/SB31/2024

Guilford and H-SC both win and will face each other in the semi-finals in Fort Wayne next weekend, guaranteeing an ODAC team in the championship game. The winner will face the winner of Trine vs Trinity (CT).

Guilford and H-SC both advance. Guilford plays CNU tomorrow. H-SC plays Nebraska Wesleyan.

Congrats to RMC on a great season. Tough loss today to a very good Calvin team. I knew the reputations of Overway and Egekeze and they proved to be accurate. What was unclear was just how good Calvin was defensively. Turns out they are quite good.

Quote from: Dark Knight on March 08, 2024, 07:07:34 PMApparently RMC hadn't played any teams with a tall, skilled center yet.

That's an accurate statement. The ODAC doesn't have a comparable player. In fact, not many of those exist at the D3 level. Congrats to Calvin. Good luck the rest of the way.

Quote from: Ryan Scott (Hoops Fan) on March 03, 2024, 02:34:14 PMAnd there no "evil NCAA."  The schools in d3 make these rules.  Yes, if the larger body had voted a higher percentage to d3 last year, as was requested, some of these cost savings issues might've gone away.  This is how we work with the limited budget that exists.

Well, that takes some of the fun out of the NCAA bashing. But, hey, what are we going to do if we don't have something to complain about and someone to blame it on. Besides, the people in the NCAA are all big boys and girls, so they should be able to handle a little momentary outrage and criticism from those of us who are otherwise supportive.

Interesting post on Twitter/X from RMC broadcaster Andrew Price:

https://twitter.com/StubbyPrice/status/1764288554593661161

"Man I guess the NCAA doesn't realize you've got Breeze Air from Hartford, JetBlue from Boston and a direct flight from Detroit all coming into RIC.  Cheaper than a bus!"
