Wheaton 87
Alma 97

The Thunder ran into a red hot shooting Alma team this afternoon and went down 97-87.  I thought Wheaton played ok most of the game but had a 3-4 minute lapse of attention late in the contest - the worst time to do so.  So not their cleanest effort of the season by any means.  Even with the Scots shooting as well as they did, it was a pretty tight game until 6 mins left.  Alma came into the game shooting 39% from 3pt and ended up shooting 16/28 for 57% and 58% (33/57) overall.

Wheaton led 71-65 with about 7 mins left but Alma went on a 25-5 run thanks to making 6 of their next 7 shots with 4 treys.  In this stretch, the Thunder showed a little of their 'young-ness' by losing some defensive composure leading to easy baskets that allowed Alma to extend.

A hot-early-but-cold-late Aston Francis led all scorers with 23 pts, 6 asts followed by Ricky Samuelson with 20pts, 6/13 3pt.  Luke Peters added 15 with 12 rebs, 4 asts.  Jay Spencer continues to impress off the bench with 12 pts, 3 rebs.  Kobe Eichelberger did not score and seemed to disappear for most of the game, likely due to the Scots playing predominantly a 2-3 zone most of the game.  Frosh FB player Spencer Peterson finally got onto the floor and will add needed size down low.

This Thunder team certainly plays hard, but I fear that as they go into conference play, the weaknesses will become more apparent.

As I said before, give Alma's freshmen a bit more floor time, and good things will start to happen for the Scots. Three of Alma's plebes scored in double figures today against Wheaton. If I was an MIAA coach, I would not take the Scots lightly, 2-5 record or no 2-5 record. That freshman class of theirs is solid.

After summering in the Holy Lands, what better road trip could you choose?

Wheaton in Vegas ... a million jokes spring to mind, and I don't know which one to pick. ;)

Tuesday January 10th: Illinois Institute of Technology

From what I have seen the one time I have been on campus this year, the new look Red Men are exactly that.  They look a whole lot different than they did a year ago and that looks to be a very good thing.  Many newcomers including a couple of transfers that should see significant playing time immediately.  The schedule breaks a little in the Red Men's favor.  They get to open with five non conference games at home before mixing in some conference action and then heading to their trip out west.  It should be interesting to see how the rotation and minutes are spread.

Key returners:  Brad Kruse 6'4 JR Forward
                   Mike Stevenson 6'4 Sr. Forward
                   Kevin Kozil 6'0 Sr. Guard
                   Drew Joiner 6'3 Soph. Guard
                  Mike Kjeldsen 6'3 Sr. Guard
                  Derek Mason 5'10 Jr. Guard
                  Ryan Kase 6'6 Sr. Forward

New Comers:
Kamal Shasi 6'2 Guard from Seton Academy originally.   Played last season at D2 Concord West Virginia, a team that won 22 games last season.  Seems to be a kid that can shoot the ball well and really defend! Something new for the 16/17 Red Men!  I imagine he will see time right away.

Jordan Thomas 5'11 Guard:  Jordan has sophomore eligibility and comes from Northern Illinois where he was a preferred walk on.  Another new guard that should see time right away.  A great perimeter shooter.  Excellent high school career out of New Trier

Brad Perry 6'10 Center: Freshman from Maine South.  15 and 10 player in high school  Back to the basket legit big man.  The type of player every division three team is looking for.  Hopefully a solid everyday four year player.

Kienan Baltimore 6'5 Forward:  A very strong offensive player.  Averaged 20 and 8 rebounds at Zion Benton High school last year.

Cam Miller 6'5 Forward:  Great athlete in high school out of Waukegan.  All conference his senior year.

Adam Radcliffe 5'10 Guard from a small school in Elgin Illinois

Jacob Polglase 6'3 Guard:  Australian wing player from Impact Academy down in Florida.

Eric Braum 6'3 Guard out of local Kenosha Tremper.  15 PPG his senior year.

Reggie Banks 6'6 Freshman:  From Richmond Burton High school.  Missed his Sr. Season due to injury.  Was a top 50 player in the state of Illinois heading into his final season.   Big time recruit who has a crazy upside.  Right near the top of the list for best CCIW recruits this season!  They are hoping he is full go on October 15th.

October 15th is almost here!! As always should be a great CCIW season.  I am glad I don't have to wait till 2017 to see some intense conference games.  I don't follow all of the teams as closely as many of you, but it appears the league is pretty wide open this year. Sure there are some favorites, but I don't see anyone right now as a for sure to make the conference tournament.  Hope some of these new guys can put Carthage in the mix this season!

Impressive list of newcomers.  Should be a fun group to watch.

Greg, your snide comments about my love for IWU opera will fail to merit an in depth reply.  Summer travels and enjoying the magic of the Warriors too good just now.  In Minneapolis enjoying Surly Beer and good meals at the many lovely eating establishments in the MSP area.

Did I mention that the IWU women just won the national championship in track and field.  Sorry, I digress.

Also ... in other news ... not sure if it has made the rounds on here (if I missed it I apologize ... every time I revisit this site there are 5 new pages of CCIW chat to catch up on). But Hayden Monix (6-7) of Lowell High School has committed to play basketball at Illinois Wesleyan.

Some of those 5 pages may actually have included basketball chatting!
We are all glad to see that Coach Rose is not continuing the habit of hoarding guards.

Quote from: AndOne on February 04, 2016, 02:21:49 AMLike most players, especially those at the D3 level, Jagger has his deficiencies. However, there is possibly one player in the conference, and I doubt many within the Division, who can drive through most of the opposition and finish as spectacularly as Mr. Anderson.

The one CCIW player who can "possibly" do that has a nice picture from last night that's attached to the NPU @ WC gamer on the NPU men's basketball page. It shows him splitting three Wheaton defenders and releasing a shot while flying through the air at a 45-degree angle. Yeah, I'd say that he can "possibly" drive through most of the opposition and finish as spectacularly as Mr. Anderson. ;)

That wasn't even his best one which was near the end of the game where he drove the lane and flipped the ball practically over his head for a lay-in . . .

He certainly had his "touch" going last night.  And to our friend izzy's points....all is not well on a number of fronts in SADville.  But the good news is that at least we are not saddled with Ron Rose as our coach!  :o

The scoreboard at NP has the point totals for players who are on the floor.  A teammate probably told him, if he didn't see it himself.

Thanks 44.

The Carthage team stopped fouling with about 15 seconds left because the game was over!  All 5 Carthage players stayed on their offensive side of the court not even attempting to defend. How can anyone think it's appropriate to shoot any shot for any reason?   There is no excuse for that. I don't care if the individual was going for 100.

At a Webster ladies game the other day, Webster was way, way up, the bench of 17 or 18 players had been emptied except for one last lady, and with 45 second left she got the call... everyone stood up and cheered as she walked on to the floor, she must never get in, I commented to my wife... Lo and behold, she ends up with the ball, 15 ft from the hoop, 10 seconds left, no defense, wide open.. and she held it until the buzzer sounded... Afterwards, I saw her in the stands during the men's game and went over to give her a tease.."hey, you're the last person on the bench, you have a one time chance..the fans say shoot it!!"  She said "Thanks, but NO, the Coach would never want us to embarrass the other team like that.."

Sportsmanship BEFORE personal numbers.

Absolutely!  In the midst of a game this competitive, how did he even know that he had 47?

I watched the final minute of regulation from last night's game three or four times today, and I'm as frustrated now as I was agonized yesterday. Yeah, I can hear the "get a life, Greg" replies already -- believe me, I hear that a lot where NPU basketball is concerned ;) -- but that final thirty seconds was ulcer-inducing.

First of all, I should make it plain that Juwan Henry shouldn't be the scapegoat for the loss. Yeah, he missed the front end of a one-and-one with 28 seconds left that would've put the Vikings up by three, with a chance to then go up by four. But the reason why he was at the line in the first place was because he had rebounded a missed Colin Lake trey attempt from the corner in front of the North Park bench -- a trey attempt that hit both insides of the rim and then flew out. If that ball stays down, NPU leads by five with a half-minute left. That's basketball, folks.

More importantly, Juwan Henry had thirty freakin' points and eight rebounds in that game. The scoring numbers that he's putting up this season -- 23.3 ppg overall and 24.7 ppg in CCIW play, the latter of which is five points higher than second-place Jordan Robinson -- are ridiculous. They're in Stevie D. territory. A good argument could be made that Juwan's this year's MOP, and without him North Park is an eighth-place team that loses the game at Faganel before it even gets off the bus. So I'm not blaming him, and nobody else should, either.

My frustration stems more from how regulation ended. After Erik Crittenden tied the game at 79-79 with a ten-foot jumper from the baseline with eight seconds to go (a magnificent clutch fadeaway that he hit against picture-perfect defense from Darius Brown), Lake took the quick inbound pass. He worked his way up the floor and moved right, using a stinging screen from Brown that put Kyle Wuest in dreamland for about a minute afterward, and was knocked to the floor by Crittenden as he attempted what would've been the game-winning layup with one second left. It was a no-doubter of a call -- one CCIW ref who was sitting in the stands later told Tom Slyder that it was clearly a foul -- but Tom O'Neill, who was standing right there on the baseline when Lake was sent flying, refused to blow his whistle. I'm going to be called biased for bringing this up, but I'd also like to point out that there have been several other times in the past when I've said on d3boards.com that a good official is one who calls the game the same way with one second left as he does with ten minutes left. Swallowing the whistle at the end of a game is a terrible way to do your job. Anybody who argues that swallowing the whistle "lets the players decide the game" is missing the point that it lets the players decide the game by getting away with stuff that they otherwise couldn't, like knocking an opposing player to the floor when he's going in for a layup. It was a good, hard foul by Crittenden that kept Lake from getting any reasonable chance at making the layup -- and it should've been called as such, with Lake going to the line for two. But it wasn't.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda, though. NPU was only in that position because key shots didn't fall earlier in that final half-minute.

Thisclose. Thisclose.  >:(

Greg,

I made it to Elmhurst for the 2nd half of last night's EC-NPU game.  I agree that Lake was fouled on his last second shot attempt.  I also thought the 'Jays got a few breaks in the last 5 minutes of the game.  I'll take the win but I do understand your frustration.

I was amazed at the 1-2 punch the Vikings have in Henry & Robinson.  They get my vote for CCIW MOP after 3 weeks of games.  I'd split my vote.  I can't pick one.  I have only seen them play twice this season but I have a hard time believing anyone else has played better.  But a lot could change in the next 4 to 5 weeks.

The rematch on February 10th should be a good one.

Clearly, you have not seen the young Raridon play yet?

Thanks sac.  My posting skills, which have always been suspect at best, have clearly eroded in the midst of this depressing SAD season!

Wow. Looks like to me that NCC -14 with 5:56 to go, had em right where they wanted em! Great game plan.

Obviously!
As the kids say, "Scoreboard, scoreboard."
Whatever works, USee. Whatever works.
In fact the ultimate result must be the reason Mike Schauer was on the phone with Todd Raridon first thing this morning requesting a copy for Wheaton's 1/27 game with IWU. As Coach Schauer said, the plan he used in their first meeting didn't work so well.  ;)
Coach Schauer is likely placing a lot of those calls this year.

I, for one, would lose no sleep over what 95% of AAU coaches have to say about anything.

PS Anyone know why the Augie student section is across from the Augie bench? I would think it would be much more effective to have that student section on Augie's defensive end in the second half of games. It's a great student section, and they get pretty loud. I would think there would be an advantage to have that noise factor disrupting the opponent's offense in the second half.
NCAA dictates seating arrangements at NCAA Tournament games. Fan sections are supposed to be kept as close to their team's bench as possible.

Yes, but they also sit across from the home bench in conference games.

Wow, looks like Dubuque is not very deep at all, should be a big advantage to the Titans.
Naturally, because they hoard players, you would expect them to always have the depth advantage.  :)

Enormous honors for two CCIW student-athletes - Dylan Overstreet and Brayden Teuscher are finalists for the Jostens Trophy.

Congratulations to a couple of fine young men!  Quite an honor to make this list.

It has been a pleasure to watch them compete, and I'm sure that their futures will be bright.
