Congrats to the Thunder. Job well done.

Quote from: AlwaysHope on March 16, 2024, 11:40:05 AMJust thought I would mention, the January 29, 1997 game at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids, a 70–56 Hope College triumph over Calvin College (now University), established an NCAA Division III single game attendance record with a capacity crowd of 11,442.  I think it is still the record for D3.  I wanted to see this game, but waited too long to buy a ticket; they were already sold out!  Any posters at this game?

I attended the '97 game, which I believe was Aaron Winkle's freshmen year. He would go on to lead the Knights to a national championship 3 years later and win POY honors. For the first and only time in my life, I watched a Rivalry game with a beer in my hands. Never thought that would happen. Almost seemed like spotten, so I didn't tell my devoutly Dutch-Calvinist immigrant dad. He really didn't need to know.

Congrats to Trine on their thrilling Elite 8 game win. Best wishes to the Thunder. Sad that the Knights can't join you in the semifinals -- but at least my Drake Bulldogs made the dance!!

Quote from: stlawus on March 08, 2024, 07:29:06 PMI'm not sure Overway is long for the division III ranks after this season.  He can start or be the first option off the bench for plenty division I mid majors.

I am reliably informed that at least one MIAA fan of a Holland team has been Hoping the same thing. Jalen is nearly finished playing two seasons at Calvin, and I'm pretty sure he plans to do two more.

Quote from: pointlem on March 03, 2024, 08:10:53 AMFinally, kudos to Coleman for his travels on our behalf and his class-act broadcasting. His play-by-play commentary is just the right blend of professionalism and Hope-support.

I haven't listened often to the online Hope announcing crew, but I agree; when I have listened in, I have found them to be quite professional and fair. One positive I should mention about the John Carroll crew last night. When the game ended and the visiting team was celebrating on JCU's floor, the announcer expressed admiration for what the Knights had accomplished over the weekend, and he noted that Calvin had probably gotten the toughest draw in the entire D3 tournament.

Quote from: doc on March 02, 2024, 08:47:43 PMWoof.  This livestream play by play guy at JCU is the most apoplectic homer I have heard in a long, long time
It was entertaining. The color man grousing about 'Underway' dominating was comical.

Yeah, I was wondering who this new guy was that found his way on to the Calvin roster. Gotta give the announcers credit though. In addition to continually repeating the "Underway" gaffe, they found about 10 different ways to pronounce Egekeze's name. However, I spent most of my night trying to determine what was worse--the announcing or the officiating.

With a dominating second half, Calvin dispatched Wheaton 77-54. The Thunder clearly have lost a lost of horsepower since last season, and it seemed to me they were fortunate to only be down 4 at the break. The Knights started the second half on a 24-4 run to come away with the easy win. To me, Calvin's most concerning weakness this season, has been the propensity to make foolish turnovers, a habit that continued the opening 20 minutes, but which the home team cleaned up the rest of game. Overway had his way in the paint, going for 26 and 11, while Hedrick led Wheaton with 17.

Calvin's comfortable 75-45 win over Wilmington on Saturday afternoon, contained one surprise, as I expected the Quakers would be a more impressive opponent than the winless Concordia Wisconsin quintet the Knights faced the night before. Such was not the case, and it was obvious early on that Wilmington was not the more talented of the two weekend opponents Calvin faced over the weekend.

It doesn't seem to me that Calvin's offense has gelled yet this season, but for the third time in five games, the Knights held their opponent to sub-30% shooting from the floor. Calvin's defense--led by the tireless Uchenna Egekeze--is really good. One note of disappointment is that for the second game in a row, Calvin tied with their opponent in total rebounds. Saturday afternoon the Quakers came away with an astounding 18 offensive caroms, though admittedly, there were plenty of opportunities as Wilmington missed 44 shots from the floor.

Overway led with 22 and 10, while Egekeze added 15 points. Trevin Winkle played well in limited duty off the bench, netting 8 points and grabbing 4 boards in only 8 minutes of playing time.

A comfortable 74-54 win by Calvin over LaRoche. The Knights haven't really clicked on offense yet this season (turnover issues), but their defense has been tremendous, leading them to three straight double-digit wins to begin the year. Egekeze, Overway and Bult all had 17 to lead Calvin. Nice to see Marcus come to life after he started his November with two unremarkable games.

Calvin takes down Marietta at Wittenberg, 68-51. Calvin didn't shoot all that well (43%), but Marietta shot miserably (25%). Egekeze had a double/double with 14 and 10, while Overway netted 20 and grabbed 8 boards.

Despite some sloppy play against a worthy opponent (the home team logged 14 turnovers when it seemed more like 20 TO's), Calvin came away with a 75-64 victory over Denison yesterday afternoon at VNA. It was a good first game test for Calvin, playing an above average opponent that had their key players back from last year (their top 5 scorers from a year ago returning). Calvin never trailed but rarely led by more than single digits until the final minutes of play. While not quite as talented as the Knights, the Denison squad reminded me a bit of the Franklin team that lost by only two points to Calvin, when the Knights made their 2000 D3 championship run--a veteran squad that plays hard, plays together, and makes precious few mistakes.

In the end, too much Jalen Overway in the post, combined with timely 3-point shooting by Luka Ressler, was more than Denison could handle. Overway finished with 24, Egekeze 12, and Ressler with 11 to lead the way. Dension was led by Heath and Radke, scoring 17 and 13 respectively. The Calvin newcomer who impressed me most was Trip Riemersma. While his 6 points in 18 minutes might seem ordinary, I thought Trip's athleticism, quickness and good decision making was evident.

If you know where to find ziggy, ;) tell him that Jordan Scott is listed at 6'3" ;)

Am I correct that Coach Sall has 3 of his offspring playing for the Knights this year with Quinton on JV, and Lydia & Hannah playing for Coach Christner?  Pretty sure from his bio I have that right - just not sure if they are triplets or not.

You are correct. They are triplets.

Quote from: KnightSlappy on August 04, 2023, 06:49:03 PMMy expectation is maybe two of the true freshman end up on varsity.
Which 1st-years would you (or anyone else here) think have a chance to play with the varsity this season?  Is there a clear two or three-to-five possibles?

Given all the returning talent at Calvin, not many freshmen have much of a chance at playing this year. Not so, however, with Jordan Scott, a 6'4" guard from Plymouth Christian. It's quite likely we're going to see a lot of this kid during the 2023-24 season.

I'll give him 6-2 but he is definitely not 6-4. Or maybe I finally hit that late-30s growth spurt.

I talked to the young man and shook his hand about two weeks ago. While I didn't have a tape measure, he's clearly taller than 6'2".
