So I'm assuming they'll never be able to host home basketball and hockey games on the same day?

I wonder what the turnaround time is to go from one sport's surface to the other.
It'll definitely be interesting, with 4 teams in the same facility and 2 different conferences involved for scheduling

For sure.  I mean, I'm 100% sure they did their due diligence, but I wouldn't have even thought it would have been feasible.

The Badgers do it, albeit with a much larger athletic department and resources. I think Ohio State does as well.

Ford site (highland bridge development) will still very likely include a UST baseball / softball complex; just awaiting a $10 $-15 million donor partner for it. That will be much needed, given softball shares with a soccer field and baseball has a 90 degree centerfield like the old Polo Grounds  ;D.

It looks like a practice rink and practice basketball arena are also integrated into this facility. I guess current basketball spot will be for volleyball and intramurals

Perhaps someone in Wisconsin knows more about the back story in this news story: https://www.weau.com/2021/11/02/undefeated-edgewood-high-football-forfeit-all-games-out-playoffs/?fbclid=IwAR2lF4DtyOB018D1_1xq9hHDIGo8mtp0RO9T8dkHohwETYZaRBqg80C5G2E

I'd like to believe the WIAA did it's due diligence before making such a difficult decision like this, especially so in football where one player doesn't carry a team as much as you would see in other sports like basketball.

BUT..then I think about the MSHSL. Whatever the wrong decision is, they find a way to make it. Whatever decision most negatively impacts the student athletes, they find a way!

Anyone know how the Carleton video broadcast is?

Not sure, but gotta give credit where it's due ... St. Olaf broadcast was stellar last week. Watched it on the TV and it was an impeccable Hi-Def image and very good camera work.
If you think the the football game was great, wait until you see the handbell choir doing their Christmas set  8-)

So good that they are often featured nationally on PBS around the Holidays. Maybe they should move up divisions or something like that  :D. Sorry, I can't resist...

I am genuinely interested to see who lands in the 3rd spot in the MIAC at the end of the year. Gustavus and Auggie look to be front runners. It could add huge momentum for recruiting down the road. I liked the Augsburg hire when it happened. It is not easy to accomplish what he did at Osseo. You're spending half your time just trying not to lose kids inter district to Maple Grove.

I imagine the optics wouldn't look that great either for a university to be pouring 8, probably 9, figures into their athletics department (football) for vanity.

Schools have been pouring money into athletics vanity projects for years. The American public or those institutions caring about the optics is long since past.

High schools do it in Texas while their standardized testing scores plummet  ;D

The biggest hurdle to playing scholarship FCS football will be actually landing an invite from the MVFC. It's a bit of a catch 22 IMO. Lets say UST becomes the top dog in the PFL and is closing the gap with scholarship FCS programs. That looks like a program that could compete in the Valley ... and that's exactly why the teams that make up the Valley (and recruit MN) wouldn't want to see an ascendant UST in the conference.

That is true. The new market presents an opportunity for them however. This is why Augustana was shunned at the 11th hour. If there is $$ to be made by the conference they will be invited in.

I think the bigger challenge would be the upheaval it would cause to the athletic department. You are talking about a major stadium upgrade, dropping at least 1 more mens sport and adding a womens sport. All that to be Title 9 compliant and meet the FCS stadium standards.
I can't seem to understand all the hand wringing about facility upgrades and money. Look at the names on the buildings and the board of trustees. The money will come. Think joint ventures and "naming rights".

Facilities...yes. Rich people like putting their names on things, and lord knows UST has a nice group to work with on that front. Although one blew a load of $$ on the Padres payroll this year and didn't even get to see them play a playoff game  :D

The bigger issue is Title 9 compliance and re - jiggering the athletic department if football goes to scholarships. I don't think UST will be immune to the problems many smaller D1 athletic departments are facing. Something will have to give when they go all in on football. Georgetown, VIllanova, Holy Cross, Lehigh arent sponsoring the number of sports UST is. And that patriot league is only doing 15 football schollies and many of them have big ticket revenue sports like basketball feeding the $$ trough.

The UST defense has quite a bit more speed to the naked eye, compared to past years. The D appears to measure up at this level too. They carried the game against San Diego, and actually looked the part against UNI too, with some advance stats being comparable to UNI's higher caliber opponents.

The offense has some gaps to play at this level, and that is being kind. The QB play is lacking severely. There are a couple soft spots on the O-line, and they need a couple more playmakers. I'm also not so sure the scheme will work particularly well, but Caruso did manage high powered D1 offenses with USD and UND....so who knows.

A little birdie tells me that a Tommie was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct with just a couple minutes left in the big loss to UNI.  Does anyone have details?
I skimmed the play by play in the stats and didn't see any mention of a personal foul penalty....I'd a player were ejected it would likely have been a personal foul as well.

#40 Jack Mohler. Was a dumb play and the optics look really bad. The guy with the ball was stood up in the pile and it seems Jack came in trying to punch the ball out. That's my most charitable and purple tinted view, but it looked terrible and things were getting chippy at that point also.
Luke Glenna #23 was ejected earlier for roughing the passer and targeting also. If you pull up the ESPN3 footage, curious what you think.

I watched both...so here's my two cents. The "targeting" call was weird as the officials on the field didn't call it and the camera angles and video quality weren't that good. Glenna went airborne and then for some reason tucked his head which caused him to hit the qb in the facemask with the crown of his helmet. If you watch the plays before that Glenna his the qb high earlier in the possession and did not draw a flag. I always love to see a Tommie get the boot however I'm tired of players getting ejected for targeting as it seems to be applied inconsistently.
The Mohler play looked more egregious to me...even if was trying to knock the ball out he took what looked like two punches at the pile / UNI player. I also thought it was pretty obvious that the players forward progress was stopped. Considering there had just been a targeting ejection there's no way the officials could let it go. I can understand being frustrated being down 44-3 but the game was over...a turnover there does nothing...I agree it was kind of dumb play.
Are both of them out for the first half the next game?
Why have your starters in at that time of the game?

Reminds me of the STA / CDH game I went to on Friday night. STA was up 34-14 with about a minute to play and kept their starting running back in. They scored a garbage touchdown to win 41-14. Why risk them getting injured or having a frustrated opponent do something stupid?

That was just good old fashioned Catholic on Catholic crime.  ;D I think STA was just pushing buttons on a former 6A bully that decided to move down a class.

Side note - I like th Johnnie baby blues. Maybe it's just the nostalgic MLB brain kicking in. I also like that Fasching has put his own stamp on things and recognizes little tweaks that add some energy. As far as I recall there are only a handful of Power 5 holdouts that haven't busted out alternate jerseys (Penn State, Bama, USC come to mind).

Side note 2 - impressed with the Tommie D. They held up pretty darn well, given the opponent and field position they had. The offense was wholly unimpressive. slow and unimaginative. QB play looked mediocre for D3, much less a top notch FCS opponent. It will be a long journey upward, which is to be expected.

Some D1 team is losing 9-3 to a D2 team!

Thanks for the continued attention and support for your neighbor faunch. It's just game one as a D1 Program and your already on the edge of your seat following along. Loyalty. It was nice to see the non scholarship Tommies beat the scholarship Huskies.

BTW, Coach Tauer just pulled in a 4* basketball recruit that had offers from Kansas, Iowa, MN, and Florida.  :o Top 40 class in the country for 2022.

I really don't get the MSHSL decision making either. It seems apathetic and lazy on their part. They decided it was ok to do soccer but not football. It was ok to practice football for a couple weeks, but not do games. And the idea for spring was half brained from the start. Most fields will be either frozen or underwater. The seniors with college aspirations won't want to risk injury. And others will have conflicts with other sports. The safety aspect of two football season within a six month window seems to have been neglected as well. It seemed like it was a way to pas the buck and inevitably cancel the season outright in the spring. Really a poor effort by MSHSL. All involved in this decision deserve all the ridicule they are getting, including the Johnnie alumnus at the helm  ;D

It seems they came at it from the approach of "Let's find ways to postpone or cancel this." A few constructive planning sessions could have sorted out minimizing risk in locker rooms and with transportation. And to add to it all we get the condescending tweets from their PR mouthpiece, John Millea, throughout it all, belittling opposing views.

We also shouldn't forget that football, like many activities, is a lifeline for disadvantaged and troubled youth. The structure and discipline it provides keep kids from doing other activities with negative consequences.

My words exactly Sagatagsam.  Nice to see not everybody is drinking the koolaid.  PS...there absolutely is no science behind the use of masks.  Ding me if you want.

This is total BS.  Not only is there science, there is also common sense.  The coronavirus spreads (mainly) by airborne transmission (i.e., by exhalations of infected people, whether or not they show symptoms).  Masks protect the mask-wearer to a degree (less airborne particles received), but they are more for avoiding transmission to others - some of us value the lives of other people.  As a Trump supporter, I assume you don't. ::)

My understanding is that the "science" on masks is mixed. I took about 45 seconds and had a few citations to random control studies that have indicated that masks don't work, and after another 45 seconds had links to places like the Mayo Clinic that suggest they do work.

I don't much care for a protracted debate on the efficacy of masks (at least not today). My preference is to not wear a mask. Though, if wearing a mask is required to enter a store, courthouse, or property of another, I will comply despite my general preference. And, if I feel the requirements of a given establishment are too onerous, I'll take my business elsewhere.

Oh, and can we cut the "some of us value the lives of other people" preening nonsense? I'd hate to see anyone break an arm patting themselves on the back.

I can fully appreciate the need to rev the economy and open things back up. I get that, I support it, and I work in a hospital. I'm with you all on that. Mistakes were made. We need to find ways to get on with everyday life.

BUT, I can't for the life of me get the argument against masks. It's the ticket to reviving the economy up and being able to open things, and it's a small price to pay, FREEDOM and MAGA notwithstanding. The first link you shared appears to be a half wit website with a bunch of studies cited on influenza from 10 years ago. That would be wonderful if... 1. it was more recent research 2. Covid were influenza or an upper respiratory virus (hint..it's not) 3. Studies were done during a pandemic on a virus where viral load matters as much or more than transmission.

Remember that the primary form of transmission for COVID is aerosolized droplets, unlike contact and surfaces with influenza. In recent weeks there have been many peer reviewed studies on how viral load from transmission is reduced in indoor transmission of the virus. That's a big deal with this. That means you may get, but your cycle with it will probably be less severe. That's a big deal, especially for frontline workers stuck indoors all day. One only needs to look at a video on you tube of expiration with a mask on vs. without. It's abundantly clear.

And to see a link in that article on headaches for those who wear masks for long periods of time. OR staff do this every single day for 8-12 hr stretches. They are surviving. The least we can do is throw one on for 20 minutes in a grocery store.

This country has lost rational though on both sides. The full lockdowns are crazy. The conspiratorial anti mask, Q anon nuts are crazy. Wear a mask. Respect others. Open up the economy. Rant over

UST was able to land the top ranked QB in Minnesota: https://twitter.com/QBKowalkowski

UST's future looks bright.

Top Ranked QB in MN is nice, except that he's a two star prospect. MN isn't exactly loaded with QB talent this year, no QB's have Power 5 offers, unlike previous years. I'd say he's about what you'd look for in a pioneer league QB. But it's not like he was considering offers from UNI, NDSU, etc.

A couple of the recruiting guys have said he had official offers from Central Michigan and Florida Atlantic. Those are FBS programs. I'd say that is a pretty solid commitment.

MSHSL just voted to move volleyball and football to March-May but allowing soccer to be played in fall.
Football in northern Minnesota in March on grass fields? NOPE 👎!
I might need to join a fall golf league or learn to hunt. I last shot a gun when I was about 12...I'm 51 now. Anybody want to teach me? 🦌, 🦆, 🐻

There doesn't seem to be much thought put into this plan. You can practice all you want, but not play in games in the fall? Somehow they believe the circumstances will change in the short window until March, making everything magically safer? There will be choices kids have to make between Jr Olympic volleyball vs HS Volleyball, Legion / Club Baseball vs Hs Baseball, club softball vs HS Softball. For kids with college aspirations the club route is the most likely choice. Injuries will be abundant with seasons literally on top of each other and two football seasons within a few months of each other. And as you said Faunch, there is no way football fields will be ready. Turf fields will be frozen and grass fields will be a mess and destroyed.

Not much the High School League does makes sense, but this one takes the cake. The High School Baseball Coaches Association instantly denounced it. An Athletic Director from a large west metro school that I know just told me it will not work logistically, and that they did not vet it with their members.
