So, GAC gets 2nd place points in football despite being 5-3 in the conference, while SJU gets 3rd place points while being 7-1.  Makes total sense.

Only place in the entire sports world with that kind of math...

I don't know enough about the teams from the east, outside of them generally not doing well late in the tournament.  Is it likely that the semifinal between the winners of the Lacrosse vs NC and Wartburg vx UWW is more of the true title game?  Or does the other side of the bracket have a chance?

I'll be honest. The upcoming Wartburg-NCC game is the de facto national championship game in my mind.

However, those east teams will get their shot to prove my biases wrong. Looking forward to how this season plays out.

I think those biases are warranted based upon actual results over the last two decades. Listen, Cortland is a very good team. Their performance against Alma was one of the best performances from an Eastern team in quite some time...quite some time. I watched that game from start to finish and while the game was close, to me, according to that game, Cortland was the better team. Granted there are always variables that can be taken into consideration and it was only one game, but they took that second half completely over.

With that said, I would be absolutely shocked, shocked on almost a 1980 USA Men's Ice Hockey Gold Metal level shocked, if Cortland won the Stagg. I believe they will play a tough game on Saturday, but RM will come away with the W. Cortland doesn't have the defense to compete with an elite D3 team it's just plain and simple. To me, Cortland is the best team to come out of the traditional Northeast since Brockport a few years back. I am incredibly proud of all they have done. With that said, the ride should end Saturday.

Your statement regarding the biases being based on results is 1000% accurate.  An East Region team HAS NOT won a Stagg Bowl since 1991....I was a junior at SJU when that happened, the week after we lost to Dayton in the semis.  The team that won that title was Ithaca.....after that, Rowan played in the Stagg back in 1998 and 1999 as the most recent East Region participants.

BTW—-North Central will win this week and next by 20+

Just so I'm clear, am I correct in thinking that it is hypothetically possible that a MIAC team could lose both non-conference games and all 3 non-division conference games and still play for a conference "championship" if they win their 4 divisional games? So, it would be possible for the MIAC "champion" to make the NCAA D3 playoffs with a 5-5 record.

There is no other conference in collegiate or professional sports that uses this method to render it's "top" teams....No other competitive endeavor that neuters the full conference schedule and only with special new math is 7-1 considered a worse record than 5-3.....Congratulations MIAC you have succeeded in making us dumber and undermined football (which was always part of the goal).

I recommend SJU schedules Northwestern for all NC games moving forward.

Beyond the disappointment I have in SJU not getting selected I also believe we need to shine the light of transparency on both the committee and the selection process moving forward......the 241 teams that play Division III football deserve and need to know what metrics matter and how they will be evaluated every year with some consistency.  I know, Win your conference and you are in, is a favorite mantra from fans whose teams are selected....but if you have at-large bids available in any quantity, teams need to know how the evaluation process will work.  Both D2 and FCS teams have a very clear picture of how playoff selection works.  Why D3 decides to write a calculus equation in hieroglyphics (which both D3Football and Logan Hansen were able to decipher) only to erase their formula to create an outcome that their equation didn't support....is beyond disingenuous to the student athletes.  I write this opinion from a place of having been a former d3 player, former d3 coach and former d3 AD.  No one knows how or who will be selected other than the committee that year and with committee turnover the criteria is totally fluid from year to year.

I have poked fun at Frank Rossi on this board over the years, but today he deserves huge kudos for asking questions that needed to be asked....although getting a blank stare in response by the Chair.....GUTLESS!

I also want to wish the best to Bethel and Steve Johnson!  He is a great coach and person that will be missed.

Pat,

Please help those of us that believed what the NCAA has published for selection criteria for Pool C......how does the committee overlook Regional Ranking, RRO and SOS to select Coe over SJU?  If it's purely W-L they need to provide a more transparent weighting system.......Both your D3Football team and Logan Hansen have done an incredible job attempting to figure out the calculus behind the selection only to have your work completely upended this year.  Might as well have the North Korean government make the selections if published criteria can be ignored when desired.....transparency be damned!

While SJU could have taken care of business against GAC last month and played for a Pool A yesterday, the clowns in the MIAC office along with the coaches and ADs that voted for and approved the divisional model with ZERO weight placed on full conference play should be embarrassed and humiliated.  Complete and utter garbage in an athletic competitive situation!

Fun to watch the Johnnies take care of business today in Moorhead.  Some sloppy and lazy moments (which if corrected would have led to several additional TDs for SJU).....the clown penalties by what seems to be the same defensive players every week need to end or the post season could be brief.

Huge kudos to Cooper Mattern from Concordia......the kid is tougher than a $2 steak, has to play QB in an offense that doesn't have a run game, a decent Oline or skilled receivers....but continues to try and will his team into the end zone......and today did so against his former teammates (who were often talking $hit...which was embarrassing).  His task was even more challenging with the Cobber defense playing with Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder at corner......Syverson would love to play Concordia every week forever......Career stats in 4 games against Concordia; 1,600 yards passing and 19TDs.

One observation from the day, the home crowd was dismal at best.....Concordia reported attendance of roughly 2,100.....if so, SJU had 1,800 of that number.  I took a picture of the home side right before kick off and there could not have been 300 total fans on that side....if there were more than 50 students (not players) from Concordia I'd be shocked.  Very sad to interest deteriorate so terribly, although being 24-26 over the last five years probably has something to do with that.

Last topic for the day......I am not one to criticize officials or officiating, but the crew that did today's SJU/Concordia game were beyond brutal and frankly one of the worst crews I have ever seen.  The job is tough and thankless, but good Lord these guys were horrible.  Do not put these group in any meaningful game!

If a team with national aspirations isn't playing two top 25 teams in the non-con games, preferably at least one other top 10%, then they are taking a big risk. And, as SJU demonstrates this year, a loss to a non-con can be tolerated. Even a loss to a mid level conference team. Assuming we and BU seal the deal this weekend.

If BU lose then we'll be 1:1 against RRO and will likely never get to the top of pool c consideration even though we would still be regionally ranked.

Bethel's rank this week counts for RRO....see Pat's post earlier today.

Looking forward to watching SJU up here in Moorhead this week.

Get rowdy for me, Redtooth.  I just can't justify that drive this weekend.

Yes you can.....get your butt up here.  How rowdy can i get?

A couple questions have been asked without answer regarding playoffs in the last couple pages; GAC last won the conference and went to the playoffs in 1987....then lost to SJU in a rematch.  The last time the MIAC sent a unranked team to the playoffs would have been 1992 when Carleton was 9-1 (having lost to SJU in week 9 70-7) and SJU was 8-1-1 having tied Concordia in week 10.

The WIAC board has an excellent analysis of the Pool C contenders and their resumes...give it a look.

Looking forward to watching SJU up here in Moorhead this week.

The playoff selection criteria clearly favors SJU with one week left.  Pulling for a Bethel championship and a big SJU win in Moorhead.  I also request that Frank permanently picks the team SJU is playing for his upset of the week; twice in the last month he has put his chips on an SJU opponent and both times SJU has won by 39+.

I don't think I've seen Joe Akoh today. Any idea why he is not playing?

He has been playing, just very nonexistent

Appreciate the prayers, all.  Dad had surgery today that removed a tumor from his spine.  The surgeon did his best, and now we'll be moving forward to fight the cancer.  :-\
Dad's a tough SOB.

Just wanted to provide a quick update on my dad.  He went through radiation treatments on his spine and had been recovering from surgery.  Then, being the stubborn guy he is, he insisted upon trimming some trees where he hurt his shoulder.  He went in for his 3-month check, where they noted that he fractured his shoulder and tore his rotator cuff.  The subsequent MRI showed that cancer contributed to the fracture.  :-\  So, he'll be doing a radiation on the shoulder, and he'll be starting chemo in the next week or so to hopefully keep this at bay for a while.  Appreciate any prayers and good vibes you all can send our way.  :'(

Praying for you, your father and your family....let me know if you need anything.

When I was a student, '91 or '92 - I can't remember which, I went to a game against the Tommies at Clemens that wasn't even full up with fans. Still enjoyed it.

EDIT: Thanks to gojohnnies.com, it was '91. The Jays won 43-15. We lost to Dayton in the National semis that year.  The next year we went 7-1-1 in conference play, losing @ UST and tying Concordia at Clemens in the last game of the year, probably costing us a post-season opportunity as we had already beaten D2 Bemidji that year.

Oz....let me fix a slight mistake in your post (only because I was a senior on the team in 92 and the Concordia game was the last of my career)....the game against Concordia was played in the MetroDome as were all the games during the last week of the MIAC season back in those days.  We tied them 18-18 (with a couple missed XPs) as we were playing a soccer player at kicker as our true kicker (my roommate) tore his ACL earlier in the season because of the ****tiest long snap of my career.  We had played Carleton the week before also in the MetroDome due to awful weather/field conditions.  They were the upstart that season and were undefeated until we beat them 70-7....the tie the following week against Concordia cost us a playoff slot and Carleton was selected instead (no auto bids in those days and only 4 selected per region).  They got thumped in their one and only playoff game and haven't been back since.
