RMC looked very uncharacteristic with several drive ending penalties. Interceptions won the game.

Looks like E&H dropped the series with Maryville. That is a shame I loved that old rivalry. It was always a tough and chippy game and felt very similar to an ODAC matchup. They picked up NC Wesleyan and Bluefield. Also the Crooked Road Classic with Ferrum has been moved from the first game to the last game of the season. I like this switch.

A true legend

Coach Lou Wacker has passed away this morning. One of the most legendary football coaches in the history of the Commonwealth and a huge influence on both the Wasps and Tigers football programs. He has molded the lives of countless players throughout generations. Godspeed Coach Wacker. You and your Khakis will be greatly missed.

Mind blowing that E&H, a once really proud football program/tradition has not been an ODAC champ this millennium as we move into the 2019 season now with no love for the Wasps.  Also wild that in over a decade since they were going to Stagg Bowls and dominating, Bridgewater hasn't won one.  What gave these schools such an advantage is my question?  I used to think W&L was handicapped by entrance requirements but I'd argue the ability to nationally recruit will always give them a leg up.  (Plus going to the triple was genius) H-SC used to have an edge facilities wise, not so much anymore.  I hate to admit it but RMC and E&H have beautiful football facilities.  Wilson Field is beautiful too imo.  What separates RMC/W&L/H-SC though?

I can tell you what happened with Bridgewater. The guy running the admissions door left and all of a sudden there wasn't the emphasis they had the previous 5 years. It really was that simple. Coach Clarke is a good coach, but that run was all set up by the athletes they were willing to push through the admissions door in an attempt to raise the college profile. When the big backer of that strategy left, so did the dominance.

As for E&H, that's a different story. E&H was dominant in the 80s and 90s, just a different time for DIII football. They were huge in that community in the 80s. That massive stadium was rocking packed with locals every home game. The atmosphere was big time. And by DIII standards, E&H is still a well supported team, but it doesn't mean as much to play there. They used to own the big local boys. They were scrapping with VT for recruits in the 80s. But college football changed. Small college ball lost the cache to DI as TV took over and E&H lost their pipeline. They hung around through the late 90s because Coach Wacker had a great reputation with the high schools, but they started to look like a million other small school options. Once Coach Wacker got old, not even hiring an incredibly expensive coach with a UMU reputation could bring back the glory, especially since Montgomery didn't have the contacts and pull that Whacker had developed.

That is true. E&H football doesnt seem to hold a candle to what it was in the 80's and 90's. Youre right about losing the edge on the big guys coming out of SWVA and East Tennessee, but i think that interest in football in general in that area is declining. Newsome has placed some focus back on that area for recruiting and it has somewhat paid off (josh fleenor, justin banks, and alot of kids coming out of the tennessee tri-cities and western NC), but this area is just not fertile like it used to be. One of the major things that I noticed is the dropoff in statewide football recruits. I am from the west end of Richmond and there are hardly anyone from my area ends up at exit 26 much less sticks around for four years. There used to be a large percentage of players coming from central and eastern Virginia when Emory was dominant. Lou Wacker and ex-president Charlie Sydnor are east Richmond and highland springs guys. Coach newsome is from Hampton and there used to be a huge pipeline from that area. Nowadays, all of this funnels straight into HSC/RMC and W&L has found its niche in more national recruiting. I loved emory and the football program. The facilities and the alumni are outstanding but im not sure what could change in terms of recruiting.

I think TigerFan's point is that HSC has more success with a balanced attack; prevents defense from dropping 8 guys into coverage.
Hard to score when the opposition knows the ball will be in the air majority of plays; 27 points (13.5) points per game is pretty damn lousy.

Weird season so far; calendar into the last week in September with only 2 games played. Almost like we are waiting for the season to start all over again.

I'm concerned about the E&H game. I see it as a must win. Starting 0-3/0-1 will be very hard to recover from especially with 2 of the losses coming on your home field.

BIG, BIG, BIG game for the Tigers on Saturday.

Go Wasps

Guilford entertains Methodist Saturday at 7 pm.  Even though the Quakers enter the game officially at 0-0, the team got 3 quarters plus of game experience versus a quality team.  The offense looked capable, but the defense allowed a lot of big plays.

I wasn't sure who would start at QB for the Quakers, but it was Alex Manley, a sophomore transfer from E&H.  Alex is a graduate of nearby West Stokes (NC) High School, so about a 50 mile trip for family and friends to watch the Quakers.  De'Eric Bell was his usual explosive self in both the offense and return teams ... it was a shame to see his school-tying 4 TD performance wiped out.  His all-purpose yards had to be approaching 350-400 when the game was declared a No Contest.

Manley was a really bright and talented quarterback at E&H and would no doubt have been a starter if saxton didn't have two years under his belt. Its good to see him getting a chance to shine especially closer to home. His older brother Zach was a hell of a linebacker for the wasps as well.

A few opinions

-Emory had a fluke year that was driven by poor senior leadership and bad team chemistry that started after the W&L win. They will be back in the running this year. The new QB is much more athletic than Satxon was and will work much better in the RPO.

- Shenandoah very well might win the ODAC

- I am so happy that I discovered this board. As a recent player It feels so good to be connected with the conference even if I cant make it to games every Saturday. Looking forward to a fun season!
