I wrote a discourse wrt last night's Williams vs Amherst game....in response to Old Guys' thoughtful post.  However, I seemed to have losted it.
Here goes again...
OLD GUY, enjoyed your post and thoughts.  Will like to hear another post after the Amherst vs Middlebury game later today...at Amherst.
Watched the Amherst vs Williams game at Amherst yesterday.  Surprised to see how young the Amherst players were in the first half and how long they were on floor.  Their energy kept the game close, in my opinion.  Should be an interesting game today when Middlebury arrives in LeFrak.  Saw a lot of my fellow Amherst supporters in the stands....ones that I sat among at Salem, Va., Williams, Trinity, Wes., in days past.  Interesting to see the new Amherst Prez and group of "older" persons enter LeFrak during halftime.  They sat on the Amherst student side.  Maybe, the older persons were members of the Board of Trustees....in town.  Maybe to discuss the Amherst Campaign direction.  Amherst is about to reach its goal for 625 million early in '63.  The new Amherst Prez is in the same class as my older son at Amherst.  All three of my children...wife's too...are Amherst grads.

Back again...in this post holiday period...checking around for Nescac games to watch.  Trinity men's team has an interesting player....a transfer post player from Tulane Un.  In this early time when Nescac teams are playing non conference teams, the tallest Trinity player is the top scorer and rebounder, etc.  In Nescac, we often point out key players transferring to D1.  Seems now, Trinity has a former D1 player becoming a key player.

Sorry guys....disagree with both last posters replies..  Amherst at Yeshiva had a seven footer shooting and hitting threes...check the scorecard.  At Amherst, the coaches from both teams were both  mixing and matching players to find the best combo in the game being played.  Early in the season, coaches want to see how players adjust to the situation at hand...like a key player getting injured.  Where was the key player for NVermont.  Amherst was running a fast-pace/tempo game.  Amherst's big front court players were challenging opponents going inside, etc.  The 30 point difference was there for most of the second half.  Seems Amherst has some  injuries too.  Mine point is that there is always a HOME court advantage with "friendly" nets.  Coaches and players want to win games at home and away...with and without friendly nets and crowds.  The Nescac only season is approaching fast. Both coaches and players want to play in post-season games.

Aww...homecourt advantage... ;D Thanks for the warning Nescac1 wrt Northern Vermont.  After playing teams away and mixing and matching line-ups, etc., Amherst played it's first home game and beat Northern Vermont...by 30 points or more...cannot recall.  Amherst hit the 3's and scored inside and outside.  Northern Vermont that gave Middlebury a challenge could not against Amherst.  Amherst continue to mix and match it's lineup.  The team from up North could not close the point spread against Amherst.

Watched the Amherst game in NYC last night...with Yeshiva last night, with a big smile on my face.  Fond memories.  My room-mate in my first grad school was from Yeshiva...took awhile to understand all the orthodox things...lights, etc.  Spent one Thanksgiving dinner with his family, etc.  Had a haircut at a barber at Yeshiva, who asked me if he could use a straight edge for my shave.  Good times and life-long friend.  Worried much when he was thinking of joining his brother in Israel during the fighting in the 60's.  Still have my Yeshiva "skull" cap.  Back to the game....seems that the head coach was evaluating his younger players...different combinations.  His seven feet freshman was shooting and making 3-point shots. Appeared to me that some of his more experienced players were "hurt" and being rested.  Will see tonight...another game.

Finished home chores.....scouting some Nescac games to watch today/tonight.  The Williams' game with the Mass. College of Liberal Arts ...just down the street... is a big miss match.  No interest...maybe a game that Williams can evaluate their bench :).  Will plan to watch the game where Eastern Conn. State Un. plays a Nescac team.  Know the President of the school.....she is married to a classmate of mine.  My classmate was one time head of Northeastern Un. and moved on to become a "big wig" in the Mass. public Un./college system.

Nice write-up Nescac1 wrt the Amherst games in Arlington, Va.  Caught the Games on-line this time around.  Attended the games in Arlington a number of years ago.  My perspective/thoughts wrt the games Amherst played....now with a new coaching staff.
First, the Wash/MD/Va area is a "rich" recruiting area for Amherst....also home to many alums, etc.
The opponents played were good tests for a generally bigger...somewhat slower Amherst team. Good tests for evaluating Amherst players and combinations.  Amherst won the game with the host team with a somewhat "shorter" lineup.  It was a quicker lineup that matched better against the shorter and often quicker host team playing on its home floor.  In any case, it was a tense but enjoyable game to watch.
I believe that Amherst's coaches used the games to evaluate player combos' mainly.  The key games follow later in the season at home and away.

Quick comment as the Winter sports start....the Amherst roster shows a "big" front court...a number of tall FY players.  A number of DC/MD/Va. players and an early Arlington, Va. tournament.  Should be an interesting/fun season.

The recent "preseason poll" of top teams brought a smile.  Looking forward to the season ahead.  Expect the Amherst's coaches to use the "poll" to challenge the returning and new players.  Amherst has, imo, some talented backcourt and front court returning players.

Been absent from this board....a number of reasons, but not because of interest. Yes, last week's win did bring a smile.  Amherst has a new Prez. An alum whose wife is also an alum.....waiting to see how his rise impacts the Amherst's sports' teams...if any.  Note, the present admission head is from MIT.  Going up north to Ithaca area to watch the Amherst vs Wes game.   Hope the "Homecoming" game with "Wes" will be competitive..  My younger son and his wife will drive.  A side note...our three children are All Amherst grads.  My oldest son is a classmate of the new Amherst prez.  However, he is teaching outside the USA, presently.

Agree with JEFFAN'S earlier post.  Amherst's head coach may stay for many reasons....one being his kids.  Amherst still has. I believe, admission slots for qualified "hometown" students....tuition free, etc.  This includes family members of faculty/coaches.  Remembered that Harvard had such admission slots for Cambridge born applicants.  Believe HFC Mills has at least one son that is a fine "hometown" football player.  Recall that the Amherst athletic director's son played football at Amherst when his father was the OFC for the team.

Surprised myself...being back again/here.....been watching soccer.  Anyway....Amherst has it's football team with group and individual pics online.  Amherst has added two new coaches...no info cited yet...except in group pix.  Several interesting observations..for me.  First...lots of new players from the D.C/Md/Va. area.  Second...two FYs' and one Soph from same family and school....expect parents to be up for the Amherst games/season.

The Amherst website has it's football review today....video and it's roster list.  In addition it's coaches list has two additional new coaches....now 4 new coaches.  Lots' of new players....wide receivers and defensive backs....quarterbacks too.  Seems Amherst is in the rebuilding phase.  However young talent can surprise.  Lot of the new players from the Wash/Md/Va area.  Looking forward to the season.....maybe make it up to the Hamilton game at Hamilton.  Bright sunny day up at Amherst....via the cameras online.  Caught a man in a suit walking in the "quad" this morning...the new Prez strolling...heading to his office in the "old" library...my time.  Oh yes, Amherst's new Prez is in the same class as my oldest son.  My younger son may have also crossed paths with the new Prez.  New prez's wife is also an Amherst grad...yes, "small world" comment  ;D

Nice "bit" of info nescac1..wrt recruits for Amherst.  Want to point out that the HC at Amherst Sears just hired two new coaches.  Maybe all the activity wrt to naming the Amherst court after former HC Nixon put a little pressure on Sears on the upcoming season.  In any case...thinking about making some trips up to view the team playing...."court side"....live.

Nice to hear from you...Vandy :D.  Agree with your comment, ya know!  Guess you picked up a little of the South...down South.  The new Amherst Prez takes over on 1 August.  He is a classmate of my oldest Amherst son.....his wife is also an Amherst grad.  Will see if he is more positive towards Amherst sports...than the one that is leaving.  Fingers crossed on the matter.
