Back a numbers of a years ago, two of the UW schools used to commonly play D1 schools in spring season and preseason.

Oshkosh would play UW-Green Bay every spring for a number of years. Oshkosh won at least 2 of those matchups to my knowledge.

Whitewater played Marquette, UW-Milwaukee, and Northwestern. Beating UWM once and narrowly losing by 1-2 goals in all other matchups.

Like you've mentioned, I think the gap between the top D3 and some D1s is still evident but games can be closer than one would expect, especially in "non-competitive" times like spring season and preseason exhibitions.

I haven't been active on these boards prior to this year and I've now seen a variation on this discussion 4 times already. :-)

Parochially, I can say that up until the early 90s, Hopkins had a long-running appointment with Towson (State) in the regular season.

While I was there, it was obvious which team was D1 and D3, but the games were (almost always) competitive. We lost 1-0, 3-1, 1-0 and 2-1. In both of those games where we scored, it was to either take a lead or tie it up. The history of the series is 19-35-1 (JHU perspective.) Last game played in '92. Our 88-90 teams were elite level, with 6 or 7 of those guys showing up as all-timers in the record books. That said, we didn't make the tournament (which particularly in 89 was pretty outrageous, but whatevs...)

I know a lot has changed in the college landscape, but I think more than most other sports, for a variety of reasons, not all elite level players go the D1 route. Again, this has been discussed in great length elsewhere, so I won't rehash all of it. Some of it was covered directly here with the Messiah players. Just in general, if you're not looking to go pro (very few are), there are tons of reasons to go D3 rather than kill yourself in a D1 program.

wow what a story about the moravian coach. Tape someone for 90 seconds is a felony huh?

This story is unbelievable...Just trying to dig behind the actual story and seeing what actually happened to have caused this. Obviously you have an extremely young coach here and he made a disastrous decision that will cost him not only his job but a future in coaching at least at the college level. However, I can only imagine the player being a complete pain in the ass not understanding that he just was not good enough to get on the field. Then add in the overbearing parent and you can see where this led. Now I am not sure why the coach would tape the parent unless he was maybe harassing him? or maybe he wanted to prove to his AD what a nutjob the parent / kid was? I am guessing the parent went to the AD behind the coaches back before the taping and the AD sided with the parent? Interesting stuff here and a little more of the facts would be nice as this is pure conjecture.

Here's a crib sheet, because this story deserves more run than it got:

* Player gripes to coach that he deserves to see more playing time. Coach scoffs at this and "berates" the player and "belittles" his playing skills.
* Player complains about this treatment to dad.
* Dad, and this is important, is the Police Chief of Fountain Hill.
* Dad leaves a voicemail on coaches phone, asking for a call back.
* Coach decides to record call.
* It is illegal to record a call or conversation in PA without all parties consenting. This is a felony.
* After recording the call, coach brings the player back into his office. He proceeds to play the call for the player, and tells him he's off the team.
* Dad hears this, knows the law, and decides to **** this guys life up forever.

So, look, the coach sounds like he was being an asshole to the player. The power dynamic here shouldn't be ignored. Even if the player (a 19 year old, so almost adult) was being a brat, the coach has all the power in the world here. I'd also look at the timing of this. This was either in a planned post-season review (lots of coaches do this--expectations, what you can be working on in the off-season, etc.) OR the kid went out of his way to seek the coaches ear. Which is actually a fairly mature step to take.

But ultimately the villain here is the Police Chief. Unless I hear something about the coach going WAY over the line, parents have NO BUSINESS getting involved in these types of situations. And bringing the guy up on felony charges? That's a life-altering screw job. Your kid can transfer if he's unhappy with his situation. Hell, even if the coach said some ****ty things to the player... This is just way out line and proportion. Call the AD if you have a beef. So many better ways to handle this situation.

We have a similar law in MA as far as recording conversations that is mostly brought into the spotlight when people attempt to discretely record the police. Of course, as common sense might dictate, telling a police officer whom you believe is abusing his or her power that you are recording them is not likely to go over well, unless he or she is an absolute defender of civil liberties. But, that's neither here nor there.

As for the coach, we don't know exactly what was said in the room between him and the player, but it certainly sounds like he could have handled the situation better on that end. Moreover, not sure that kicking the kid off the team was the right move (allegedly) just because his father wanted to talk to him. Perhaps the kid was a total brat ("I am better than XYZ starter" vs. "how can I improve and work my way into the first XI?") but still seemed to be a bit of an overstep.

That being said...

I get that this (seems to fall) under the rule of the law, but this seems to be an unnecessary step for the father to take. No matter how much of an a-hole the coach was, no need to severely damage his career prospects (not just in the collegiate soccer world, but in general). Depending on how much air time this story gets, and if things come out in the future, the police chief may be in for some bad publicity and may regret the move.

Finding out that the father was chief of police and doing a little digging on his social media, helps to explain this incident a lot more. Thanks for the insight.

Seems like quite a stable guy...

To be fair, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, and I wouldn't exempt myself from that group. That being said, I agree that it definitely adds some context.

Johnson Wales University (Denver) is transitioning to D3 and will join the SCAC. They recently announced Andy Kohel as the new head coach. Andy played and was an Assistant at UW Oshkosh and more recently was on staff at Colorado College.

Is there a commitment list for the 2018 class? I'd imagine that most schools are finalizing for 2018s.

OldNed

Ommadawn started this discussion with some commitment information - but that was for 2016. I don't know if there's a comprehensive list of 2018 D3 commitments anywhere.  It appears that the last time D3Soccer.com had a commitment list was for 2016.  I follow another board that lists 2018 commitment for Massachusetts players (http://talking-soccer.com/TS4/showthread.php?t=150790), and I think it's a LOT of work for the poster who maintains that list. I imagine it's 50 times harder to maintain a countrywide commitment list.

OldNed

Thanks to Ommadawn for starting this off.  I've taken what he's already posted and put in all the New England commitments that I know about so far.  If anyone wants to add to this, please feel free.
