Cole Teal has been the best Eph three point shooter in each of the last two seasons. He is off to a poor start again this year. I seriously doubt that is where it will end. He will come back and shoot a very high % in league season, just like he has before. The Kempton/Karpowitz situation is really unusual, because Karp is a great offensive center, and Kempton is one of the best defensive centers Williams has ever had. Both need to play for Williams to be as good as they can be. The coaches know best, because they know the players, and their opponents.

Dave, Great lineup. Way to be with all the December sports pulling at you

Thanks... honestly this month has been harder than the past seasons... I'm fried already. LOL

Teal was 4-9 from deep in the game that ended Midd's season last year.  I'm inclined to think he is capable of doing it again.  In the same building.
One good reason not to express doubt about players in this forum is so that comments don't come back to bite you in the ass.
My hope is that Cole Teal saves his big games for Amherst and the rematch with Wesleyan.

Bowdoin knocks off Bates; Bates defeats Colby 92-89 on Saturday. Hard to predict CBB outcomes. It would be nice to get an observation or two from Bobcat or Mule fans. "Colby Hoops"?

Yes, it seems like the CBB will evenly matched this year. Watched most of the game -- Colby was in control for a long time behind some great play from Matt Hanna -- four straight deep threes, and a couple of one handed scoop floaters. Unfortunately, some cold shooting and really poor floor balance in the second half led to several runouts from Bates to take the lead. With a young team things can snowball quickly, and the floor balance, untimely turnovers and unneeded technical on Hanna changed the momentum quickly.

Tom Coyne was great for Bates all game, particularly keeping them in the game in the first half when the rest of the Bobcats really struggled. Coyne -- who was shooting 18% from three coming into the game -- couldn't miss finishing with 30 points. He banked in two consecutive three pointers late in the game, including a 35 footer as the shotclock expired. Colby had the ball with a chance to tie with 5 seconds to go, but Ethan Schlager was blocked at the buzzer.

Spellman is a fun player to watch. Has an unorthodox tempo to his game and can finish at some tough angles around the hoop. He didn't have a great first half, but made some timely buckets in the second half.

It was a fun game, should be a competitive fight at the backend of the NESCAC. With so many underclassmen, every game is a learning experience.

The only team separated right now from the rest of the NESCAC is Conn College. You could make a case for tufts. Interesting.

Impossible to know about Tufts right now.  They have played without key front court returnees: Engvall and Garrett.  I think both will return in January.  In the meantime, young guys got some meaningful minutes.  Time will tell.

The four early leaders in the NESCAC ROY race all had HUGE games over the weekend.  All four were highly-regarded coming into the season and have lived up to it plus some:

Grant Robinson, Amherst, 19 points and 5 assists, 5-6 from 3, where he had previously struggled
Jack Farrell, Middlebury, 22 points and 2 assists, 3-5 from 3
Matt Hannah, Colby, 23 points, 7 boards, 5 assists, 4-9 from 3
Austin Hutcherson, Wesleyan, 27, points, 6 boards, 4 steals, 7-9 from 3

Farrell for the season is averaging 9-3-2 with an incredible shooting line of 50/55/90
Robinson is at an even more impressive 10-4-4 but his shooting has been a bit less efficient 41/24/64
Hannah is at 14-3-3, 50/41/62
Hutcherson, 11-3-2, 43/50/71, plus an impressive 2 spg and 1 bpg, he's doing it all

Bowdoin's Zavier Rucker is in the mix as well, I'd say.  NESCAC's loaded rookie class has helped make up for a long of top-tier departures in the off-season.  Those five guys all look like strong ROY candidates (with Hutcherson as the odds-on favorite), but several other guys are close behind: Colby's Wallace Tucker, Wesleyan's Jordan James and Antone Walker, Amherst's Fru Che and Timmy McCarthy, and Conn College's Dan Draffan.

What's most impressive is that rookies are playing huge roles on three of the top-tier teams in the league, Middlebury, Wesleyan and Amherst.  A good sign for those three as you'd expect their young guys to keep improving over the course of the season and of course into future seasons.

Middhoops...thanks for diverting the EPH player's focus :)
Somehow, I am getting the feeling that players' 3- point effeciency is tied to the pressure of the game and the opponent.  Case in point is G. Robinson's numbers in the Babson game and in the Lasell gym...both away games.
Tufts did win the Babson game led by Pace's scoring in the second half.  Expect Tufts will challenge for a spot in the CAC Tourny.  Tuft's HC will make the adjustments with the players he has on hand.
Amherst has a interesting game with Springfield on Tues....Start of a Jewish Holiday and the beginning of the "exam period".

Jordan James has a lot of talent. Saw him at the Williams-Wes game and he made a couple of wow plays.

He's got some Delpeche in him. Seems aggressive - but I think it's true.

JEFFFAN

Nice win for the Jeffs last night.  Johnny McCarthy had a very strong game as did the frosh, Fru Che.  Not sure that we heard as much about him as we did Grant Robinson coming out of high school but he is quickly establishing himself as a strong presence on this team already.  Whether he and Robinson, as frosh, can withstand the rigors of upperclassmen centric NESCAC players remains to be seen but I am encouraged that some of the younger players are stepping up during a season of comparatively low expectations.

A note to Panther fans.
Swarthmore plays at York at 8 tonight.  Both teams are undefeated and are two of Midd's next three opponents.
Massey calls it a toss up.
