For fitness, the best thing is the beep test...

Absolutely not. Essentially, "go run your 400 pace for two laps."   :o

Blooter I have to disagree with you on the mile and 2 mile tests and which one makes more sense. But I guess it's how you look at it too. I feel that a 2 mile test is more suitable because its a good test of endurance and pace and stamina which is what a soccer game is as to where a mile is practically just a sprint. If you sprint it you can get a good time but then you're gassed. With the 2 mile its a good mix of pacing and sprinting over a longer period of time which is what soccer is mostly. 90 minutes of fitness with pacing yourself and sprinting when needed. Either I think are good preseason conditioning tests for teams to do. Just giving a different angle is all  :)

Definitely a fair interpretation. My viewpoint is that, while you need good endurance in a soccer game, I think the two-mile is a bit unrealistic in that such a pace is not likely to be replicated for a similar amount of time in a soccer game, whereas the mile is more representative of the high-speed running done in soccer games and is more difficult anaerobically. I myself always found the mile more difficult than the two-mile.

One could make the argument that the two-mile is a better indicator of endurance, and I would agree with that, but as much as there is an endurance component to soccer I think anaerobic fitness is perhaps a better indicator of overall fitness in terms of soccer. Regardless, just my opinion, and both are good indicators of fitness.

I hope people see your responses on here.....because that's how a debate should be! You both disagreed without giving any - karma to each other and respected each other's viewpoints. So + karma to both!!! Maybe the New Year will keep this trend up. Well done to both of you for finally setting an example of what these boards conversations should be like.

As for now commenting on the matter I believe that both are good tests as indicated. I think for a team that is winning by say a goal and getting pressed by the opposition for the last 10 or 15 minutes because they are desperate for a goal is a good comparison for the 2 mile test. Or overtime periods as well can be that "2 mile test" time. It's a good mental aspect to remind players with because it gives them a boost that they know they can do it. I think either test is sufficient as anything involving running works for soccer players  :D

the answer to all your fitness test question is something called the beep test.

I am sort of on the fence with the 1mile vs. 2 mile topic and would say I agree with both blooter and shooter on their analysis. However, I was never a fan of the two mile. The D3 school I played for ran the 2 mile on the first day of preseason(roughly 7am) and you had to run under a specific time or you could not train until you did. To be honest, you usually ran more then 2 miles as there were some guys who struggled and you literally were running and sprinting(pushing) them to get under the time. I played center mid my entire 4 years(well 2 games at right back my freshman year). I never ran a sub 11, 2 mile. I think in my 4 years over the summer I trained to run the 2 mile once each summer and that was it(just to make sure I could do it and usually it was early in the summer). I focused my attention on short sprints, short runs(400/800) at a fast pace, stair training(bleachers) and ladder training. My whole goal was to work hard for 3-5 minutes and then try to decrease my heart rate. I thought of it similar to a soccer game as you get throw ins, goal kicks, and subs. Yes the majority of the time you do run longer than 3-5 minutes without a stoppage but the ball does a lot of that work. I could last 90 minutes+ based on my summer training and then obviously the continual fitness training provided during the season. aboutThis very well could be how my body works and everyone is different as recently I trained for a half marathon and now training for a full but I struggle to get through 90 minutes in my over 30 league.
