I have been baffled all year by the weak'ish crowds and numb atmosphere at DeVos this year.  Even last night only 2,400 for an NCAA tournament game against WashU.

Maybe now the Hope community will finally get behind this team.

I have as well.  The single biggest problem has been student support. Even last night the student section wasn't half full. Both the past weekends the Dew Crew has been a disappointment in terms of turnout, even if those who show up are spirited enough.

I suspect the overall turnout numbers are down this year, but I guess we will find out soon enough. In any case, Sac is right that the atmosphere just hasn't been the same. I don't know exactly what this can be attributed to. One hypothesis: I see a lot more people spending a lot more time with their noses in their cell phones - a regrettable cultural trend in general, and one that may be affecting crowd attention and participation. If the cell phone is not the worst invention ever, it's certainly on the short list. I can't prove that's the reason, of course, but I'd be surprised if it's not a contributing factor.

When you can no longer bash on Hope's team, its time to move on to an easier target and start bashing millennials.

You can't give up 20 offensive boards and expect to win. Granted, a lot of those were long rebounds over bad misses, but if you have fewer defensive rebounds than your opponent has offensive rebounds, it's game over.

I've said all along this is a pretty mediocre Hope team with limited depth. They've risen to the top of a weak league. I can't say Saturday's outcome surprised me, but it still makes me shake my head that these two programs are playing at this level.
Some days your pessimistic assessments of Hope's team just makes me chuckle.  Did they play a poor game on Saturday, you bet they did.  Are they mediocre - not even in the same time zone

While this is a very pessimistic way to look at things, I don't know if anything that HC said is incorrect per se. In the last 10 years this would probably rank as the 5th best team that Hope has had (would be 7th if we went last 12 years), so by Hope's standards could be classified as mediocre. (This is all based on feel, I didn't look up any numbers).

You can either look at the glass as half full or half empty, but either way you look at it, you are still correct.

There's a difference between a team that is mediocre by Hope and Calvin standards and a team that is mediocre by Division III basketball standards.

Both Hope and Calvin are above average -- D3 wide -- this season (Hope much more so than Calvin).

Fair enough, and a lot of this is relative as well. This feels like a down year overall this year in D3, just talent wise and top end team wise, so relative to its field, this team is probably closer to elite than many of its predecessors that I feel were a bit better. (last year and 2011 for example)

This one felt more flagrant to me... :)

Beyond it being potentially an intentional foul call, it also appears it should have been 3 shots instead of 2. Ref clearly signals a shooting foul, and based on this image, Chad appears to have his feet behind the arc when fouled and shooting. Flat out, we actually have the technology now, why wasn't this reviewed? Other plays were reviewed throughout the game, both of these would appear to be triggers for a potential review with 6 seconds left in OT.

If you want to Zapruder the film, there's no way this was even a shooting foul. Carlson is clearly takes a dribble after the jersey is tugged and then proceeds with the desperation shot attempt.

+k for the use of Zapruder as a verb.

So two errors by the ref for Calvin and one for Hope on one play. (The two for Hope were still reviewable by rule, I believe while the Calvin one was not).

To steal a quote from our President for this. "SAD!!!"

Someone give Dante Hawkins a hug for his last second heroics against Wheaton and Hanover and to Harrison Blackledge for the clutch free-throws at Calvin, to Ben Gardner for the big defensive rebound and free throws at Adrian, to Brock Benson for the big free throws and rebounds at Albion and Chad Carlson for the big shots at Adrian.

Also, Mitchell O'Brien against Wheaton, (10 points in just over a minute I believe) who has since fallen out of the rotation. Totally a team effort to get to this point. They are now in, so there is a chance. Hopefully all the close calls and the battles under pressure will have this team well tested for the gauntlet they will probably have to go through.

Side bar, if Hope does pull off the upset and get to the sweet 16, then they will almost certainly be flying somewhere. As only 3 other teams in the rest of the region are within the 500 miles, and they all have to get past St. Thomas.

I really hope that is a problem we have to face.

See you all in Rock Island!

They list Alma's RRO's as 5-4 and Hope at 3-1, that could only happen if they count Trine as ranked.  So some obvious errors here.

Isn't it once ranked always ranked now?

Went through and added the current RRO's for each team   First parenthesis is RRO's with bold being wins, second parenthesis is games remaining not including conference tournaments.

As far as rankable teams in this region, this is pretty much it.  I even added Wittenberg and they would be a big long shot even if they won out their regular season.  Even if Trine lost again Saturday to Alma I would not be surprised if they remained #9.

Two changes would be compelling and that's Marietta to #1, JCU to #2 (which gets settled tomorrow anyway)  and I would look hard at Alma to #4, Hope #5.

1.  John Carroll          2-0 (Marietta, Mt. Union)      (Marietta, Mt. Union)
2.  Marietta                4-1 (Catholic, John Carroll, Wooster, Mt. Union, Mt. Union)      (John Carroll)
3.  Ohio Wesleyan     4-2 (Alma, Trine, Wooster, Hiram, Wooster, Hiram)         (none)
4.  Hope                    3-1  (Alma, Trine, Alma, Trine)     (none)
5.  Alma                     5-3 (Ohio Wesleyan, Elmhurst, North Central, Texas Lutheran, St. Norbert Hope, Trine, Hope)        (Trine)
6.  Wooster               2-4 (Ohio Wesleyan, Salisbury, Marietta, Hiram, Ohio Wesleyan, Hiram)        (none)
7.  Mt. Union              1-4 (North Central, Chicago, John Carroll, Marietta, Marietta)      (John Carroll)
8.  Hiram                    2-2 (Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster)     (none)
9.  Trine                     0-4 (Ohio Wesleyan, Hope, Alma, Hope)      (Alma)

PSU-Behrend             0-0     (none)        (none)
Mt. St. Joseph            0-1  (Marietta)
Hilbert                        0-0          (none)       (none)
St. Vincent                  1-1  (Marietta, Catholic)     (none)
Wittenberg                 1-3  (Ohio Wesleyan, Hiram, Wooster,, Ohio Wesleyan)      (Wooster, Hiram)

For Hope, it will be of great benefit for either Albion or UW LaCrosse to sneak into the rankings at some point. That could help significantly in comparing to John Carroll or OWU.

I have no idea why, but Hope picks up two number 1 votes in the latest poll. Hope does drop down to 4 as Elmhurst jumps us.

At some point, they have to realize we aren't a top 10 team right? (At some point we may get there, but not with how we have been playing so far).

Wow. What a game.

Hope was honestly not very good for long stretches in this game. It also seemed like Wheaton could not miss all night long. Smith in the block and Samuelsson from long range were unguardable for Hope.

Hope clawed its way back to a 3 point deficit at 58-55 with about 7 minutes to go, but back to back 3's by Wheaton kept the Dutchmen at bay up until one of the craziest final minute and a half sequences I have ever watched.

In the last minute and a half, Wheaton was up 7, made every shot that it took, and still needed a missed Dante Hawkins free throw with 3 seconds left to force OT. How you ask? The Mitchell O'Brien factor. The junior scored 10 points in a 65 second span to turn a 7 point deficit into a 1 point lead.

Then add a three pointer by Wheaton and an And 1 by Hawkins and you get the wild finish that seems to happen quite often in this challenge. I was reminded of the Will Bowser crazy three point buzzer beater to force OT vs Carthage in 09. Or the late comeback by Hope against Wheaton in 2011 at Calvin. In this event, something fun and exciting seems to always be in the cards.

If we are being honest, Hope should not have won this game. They got out played for most of this game. Somehow, they dug deep and got it done. One of those games that should look good on the resume come March. This Wheaton team will continue to improve all year and might be able to compete with the top level of the CCIW.

Wow.
