Quote from: joelmama on February 29, 2024, 11:56:11 AMWouldn't a good solution be to have the HCAC and OAC merge into a 16 team league with two 8 team divisions (move Wilmington to HCAC division and have a couple of crossovers each year?

Wouldn't they lose an automatic playoff berth then?  The 2nd place team would not be guaranteed a spot.  I don't believe the NCAA would recognize it as two separate conferences/divisions/playoff births.

JCU couldn't handle the rigors of an OAC schedule.  They probably finance their waterbed purchases.

Quote from: sigma one on February 22, 2024, 10:33:53 AMFirst, I love it that the top D3 teams have been scheduling other top teams, both in region and across regions.  Makes for good football.  I'm just spitballing here, but could it be that JCU scheduling competitive OOC opponents is a strategy that, assuming they win the OOC game against a quality team, will raise their SOS, thus giving them a better chance of being chosen for one of the very limited  playoff spots if (as is usual) they lose to UMU?   Right now, losing to Mount is an elimination game for them if they schedule a weak OOC team.

Yes, I believe that was their strategy in recent scheduling.

Quote from: sigma one on February 22, 2024, 09:35:48 AMI read that post on JCU and their clever reasoning for leaving the OAC.  Which colleges in the OAC are in close danger of collapsing?  Frankly, this sounds like a defensible excuse for ducking UMU in football.  And I don't think I blame them, particularly because of the shrinking at-large invitations into the playoffs.  I really liked the D3 post about expansion to 40 teams, but I think it's a long shot that the NCAA will move very quickly in that direction.  I hope I am wrong!

I've not heard any specifics on schools closing.

Quote from: sigma one on February 22, 2024, 09:00:04 AMYes, DC.  Thanks for the correction.  Any view on the change of conferences for JCU?
A JCU poster on the OAC page said he thought it was JCU positioning themselves for a better future in case current OAC teams actually close down as institutions.  It seems possible, but I'm sure the changes to Playoff Bids (reduction of Group C due to conferences with at least 6 members getting automatic bids) had to come into play.  JCU used to be a pretty sure bet to make it to the playoffs as the runner up OAC team.  And they often did well.

Quote from: sigma one on February 22, 2024, 08:54:52 AMCongratulations to Pat and all the others who worked hard to get us up and running again.
I have some strong opinions on the vote to invite John Carroll into the NCAC, but I will save them for another day to see if my emotions on that settle down.
Wabash is searching for a new OC.  Ridings has departed for Campbell. He improved the defense last year and almost all the starters and many of the contributors return.  He was also helped by a new OL coach, who improved production last year and will now, in his second year, make them even better.
Let's be real.  JCU will almost certainly dominate football in the conference, with little chance for anyone else to represent the NCAC in the playoffs for the near term (maybe long
term) future.  Wabash will struggle to win 7/8 games a year--and that's assuming they recruit better than they have lately.  That being said, I'll repeat what I have written here several times:  Morel will be the HC as long as he wants to stay.  So we can lament the drop off over the last several years, but we are whistling in the dark.  Key to '24 will be replacing Liam at
QB; obviously there's not another one remotely like him out there.
Anyway, good to be able to share again.

I thought Ridings was the Defensive Coordinator?

Quote from: Raider 68 on February 20, 2024, 08:41:30 PMAs many have read about JCU moving to the NCAC in 2025, I am wondering who could join the OAC going forward if any school. JCU is leaving for a chance to become a top dog in the NCAC vs. always going against the Raiders for post season opportunities. While there also the academic considerations, I do not see the conferences be equal in sport teams. JCU has always been a major player in all OAC sports, so I am missing their logic with this move.

Mount will have an opportunity to see a more competitive non-conference schedule if they can play teams with better programs than the last several years.

Maybe two open dates can bring about a more competitive schedule in 2025 and beyond.

going to be tough to replace JCU's almost standard 9-1/8-2/7-3 on the Raiders schedule.  Mount really needs to go after the top of the PAC if/when they re-open their conference to OOC games

hey, hey, since 2013 we've only had 2 seasons finishing worse than 8-2...

sounding a lot like a slightly more successful BW....

BW's record of mediocrity.

Quote from: Kira & Jaxon's Dad on February 20, 2024, 08:32:59 AMHow about those Streaks and their future plans?

Now Mount Union will never lose the OAC!!!

those Mount-JCU playoff matchups will be something, probably look a lot like the past games in this "rivalry"

If JCU can get past DePauw, Dennison, Witt and Wabash.

Watching the National Championship Game, I was thinking that Athletically Mount Union could play with those two teams.  I think what is missing is teamwork and passion.

In the past, the team was very Self-Confident and showed it in their play.  Now that Mount has come back to the field a bit, and others have improved, you can't just step on the field and hope the other teams piss down their legs.

Mount needs to get some swagger back, as well as the focus that LK/VK had instilled in the team.  Coaches can give all the speeches they want, but the best "Culture" teams I have been around (as a Coach's son, a player and a Coach) have been player led.

Key Upperclassmen on Offense and Defense need to take the lead in the offseason and bring back the mojo of Raiders past.

I wish that "The Standard" would go the way of the "Welcome to the Machine" playoff banner.  Neither is true any longer and like you said nobody is scared to play these Raiders.  That could change back in the future seasons, but these kids need to earn it.  The swagger needs to be there against the best competition, not just the Wilmingtons and Otterbeins of the D3 landscape.

I've joked with my buddies that covid might have killed the Mount program.  We've had basically the same really talented team for 4 years, but I'm not sure that they ever got much better over that 4 year stretch.  Kind of stagnant. Was is lack of player leadership?  Lack of toughness? Coaching not up to the program's typical level? Lack of institutional help, i.e. Hire a Strength and Conditioning coach?

It has been a weird era with covid-years in D3FB, hopefully its almost over and we'll be back to four year players instead of 23/24 year olds on the field.  But with the transfer portal, I don't know that we'll ever be back to true D3 football

Who has run the S&C program recently?

according to https://athletics.mountunion.edu/staff-directory

its probably a part-time position...for the entire athletic department.  Good luck finding that at any other top D3fb program, let alone "the standard"

I'm assuming that the Football coaches run their own specific program.

I'm sure. I think I heard something about Klaus being the S/C for football.  I guess you just get green eyes for other D3 programs having S/C coaches, offensive coordinators, things like that

LOL
