Sorry if this was discussed previously- has St Thomas had success in landing new recruits that can play at the D1 level?

Time will tell. They haven't won too many recruiting battles with the Dakota schools and UNI, but have sniped a few which indicates to me they're targeting the right kids. Most kids they've landed have had plenty of NSIC attention which is plenty good enough to win in the Pioneer.

Very cool "essay" by UST's Riley Miller--- says a lot about the joy of hoops from a player's perspective

Sp tonight's full slate of men's hoops games, all the women's games except CSB-Concordia and all hockey of both genders except SJU-St. Scholastica have been postponed, presumably due to COVID protocol.  So I'm stuck pretending to care about the TWs game on the tube tonight and the TWs are just plain bad basketball.

UST @ Bethel scheduled for tonight postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. Bummer.

You would think the teams would do CV like families with the chickenpox before that vaccine was developed.  Get all the players sick together in the offseason so they run the season without interruption.

If you check out my new Around the Nation column today, you'll see it's the teams that had covid early that are seeing testing complications now, with everyone through the "safe" window.

Not to mention... imagine having everyone get the virus to "avoid problems later" and suddenly a student ends up in the hospital on a ventilator because either the virus got to them harder for reasons unknown or they had an unknown underlying condition. That's a hell of a way to find out about a health problem ... AND the school, department, team, even coach are going to be in serious hot water from a lot of different places for such an idea.

And before anyone says students are the least likely to get sick, yes that is what general statistics do say ... however, that doesn't mean students aren't going to get it. A friend and former colleague of mine's son is a Tennessee student. He's a sophomore or junior. Last fall he was in the hospital and ICU for two weeks - nearly had serious surgery to fight back a covid infection. He needed physical therapy just to learn to walk again (which I can appreciate) and will have scars the rest of his life from all the tubes and such that he had in his body. It's great to throw around "well stats say" until it hits someone you know...

I've done some reading on this, as pertains to long-term effects on college athletes. Data is still preliminary but a study at Ohio State showed 30% of football players with "heart damage."
I guess still TBD what that means long term, whether it's something that will resolve itself or make one more susceptible to future heart problems. But that's among the issues with the chicken pox COVID party approach.
Then there's studies like this one (OK, so no Aussies or Johnnies were involved in the study but it is still valid research):

or stories like these:

https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/covid-linked-heart-inflammation-college-athletes-small-study-suggests-n1239875

Also, I seem to remember reading about a healthy 9 yr old who now has serious lung damage after a "slight" case of COVID with "mild" symptoms and will likely have those issues the rest of his/her life.

Looks like every participating MIAC team added three NON-conference games vs MIAC schools to their schedule for a total of 10 games each (which meets the NCAA threshold-- right Pat?). This includes a UST @ SJ2 battle on March 3 in Collegeville-- one week after the final MIAC battle between the two.

Winter sports schedule announced. Basketball and hockey with up to 4 non-conference games beginning January 29. 7-game conference schedule starting February 6.

St John's @ UST February 24th.

No playoffs.
Full story- https://miac.prestosports.com/general/2020-21/releases/20210112lfbdy1

Carleton, Olaf & Mac opting out (along with Kates on women's side).

No fans, so its going to feel weird-- like full dress scrimmages but "for real." All games webcast (free) and league winner qualifies for NCAA, which may or may not happen

UST's final game ever in MIAC play is scheduled for March 6, at home  vs Bethel.

SJU in lockdown due to manhunt with a potentially armed individual.

Today is finals for C block and my son says it is difficult to concentrate with helicopters and SWAT teams everywhere.
seems odd that the FBI would be one of SIXTEEN law enforcement agencies involved...but a Black suspect in Stearns County.....

Are you a racist?  What's up with that comment?  You should take a good long look in the mirror, mate.
no, but I grew around there and know that Stearns County is full of racists, which was my point. Maybe a remedial reading class is in order Oz? Crickee, I'm nearly impressed that 3 of your 20 words had more than 1 syllable

Hazzben---My deepest condolences on the loss of your father. We had the same visitation issues. The policy about visitation makes sense to me intellectually but is totally horrible in application. I hope your dad didn't suffer much and that you take solace in your many memories of him!

It's nice that y'all theorize and chatter about COVID, but until you bury a loved one who died from it, you really don't know what you're talking about, other than abstract theory. My mom, who was in excellent physical health for someone much younger than her age, tested positive on Nov 3 and died Nov 8.  Maybe the US needs to follow the example of Oz, NZ, South Korea, Japan and others and actually do something to stop this disease but too many have the selfish mindset  of "don't inconvenience me, you're stepping on my rights" (even when those rights step on the rights of others)

(Yeah I'm bitter about this)

More detailed account of the Benson story:  https://patriotnewsmn.com/news/benson-moving-on-from-character-assassination

What an a$$ that kid's dad is...

It also seems like the  Kimball administration dropped the ball on this one with how quickly they reacted, I'm curious about the opinion of the legal minds here on if Kimball would'be been putting themselves at a greater risk of liability if they hadn't acted quickly and the accusations were true?

Nice balanced piece by the Tri-County News (serving Kimball, Watkins & Eden Valley): https://tricountynews.mn/2020/07/22/benson-hopes-to-return-to-dream-life/

Nothing new in the article, other than confirmation that Benson was respected in town.  In talking with fam & friends in the area, it  sounds like 90% of KAHS community (players, students, family and town folk) have been behind Benson throughout the ordeal. If anything, attorney Liz Vieira should be held accountable for the slipshod job she did and the Admin should be replaced. Hopefully some AD & school district will see the allegations for the bull**** they were and hire themselves a winner.

A truly great read even if you hate the Tommies:

I'm excited for JT & Ruth on their new challenges and am confident they are more than up to the daunting task ahead!

A reliable source informed me that the MIAC will play only conference games this fall..... still undecided about the full football season (sounds like there have been some heated discussions)

Truly a raw deal by Kimball High, altho in fairness, the Admin was kind of railroaded into suspending Benson by parents and trapped by policy of suspension once accused.  Sounds like the kid was twisted into accusing his coach("I guess it maybe mighta coulda happened, i dunno"). I would love to see him get reinstated and continue to turn the Cubs into a strong contender. They've been horse**** for way too long!

Jamtod-- the UMAC is all over it, at least in hoops... football? not so much   ;D 8-)
