He...may not be in Arizona long.

Wow. Nice start to a career.

Is it surprising a second rounder got sent to a rookie league team to start?

My guess on that:

second rounder - someone saw potential they really liked.

rookie league - but being from d3, they doubted whether he could immediately handle higher competition.
Teams no longer have more than one Single-A team, so the organizational steps are more regimented these days. There's variance in what's allowed in terms of the numbers of lower-level affiliates an organization can have – the Brewers have two Rookie teams but no Short-Season team, the Mets have two Dominican teams, some have affiliates in the Venezuela Summer League – but each has just one team at A, Advanced-A, AA and AAA. That narrows the starting point for most players.

Bryce Harper started in Single-A, but it's rare to see players begin the journey above Rookie or Short-Season. Consensus could be that No. 5 pick Kyle Zimmer was the college pitcher closest to being MLB-ready. He's with the AZL Royals. That's not unusual, especially when you look at where other high-dollar picks get assigned.

If you missed it Maxwell went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI in his fourth pro game. He leads the AZL in hits and is in the top four in R, 2B, OBP, SLG, OPS, AVG and RBI.

Marietta's Tim Saunders went 6-for-6 the other day and ranks second in the AZL with 10 hits, sixth with a .526 AVG and seventh with two stolen bases.

There's plenty more good stuff. This is a sample of the rookies and Short-Season players out of the gate: Emory's Paul Schwendel had 4 K in 1.2 IP in his pro debut, Huntingdon's Miles Walding went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in his debut, Trinity's Ben Klimesh hasn't allowed a run and has 1 SV in 3 G, Oberlin's Phil Brua is 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 2 H allowed in 7.1 IP, UT Tyler's Logan Chitwood is 2-0 in 2 relief apps, Ithaca's Tucker Healy has 7 K and 0 BB in 4 IP, St. Olaf's Ben Hughes has a 1.64 ERA in two starts, Chapman's Brian Rauh tossed 2 scoreless innings in his debut, Wooster's Matt Johnson is batting .333 with 2 SB as an everyday infielder, RMC's Jordan Walton is batting .500.

I won't make a habit of this type of post, but I encourage you to track player progress from the links on the master list. D-III players are thriving at each level.

Cleveland claimed Vinny Rottino off waivers after the Mets designated him for reassignment.

Ricardo Lizcano (Heidelberg) signed up with the St Louis Cardinals and is assigned to their Johnson City, Tenn. farm club as a catcher.

Nice to see Jirschele finally getting some regular playing time and running with it...

After the promotion of the starting SS, Jirschele has gotten five starts at SS and gone 10x18 without committing an error.  He is now batting .476 with just a single strikeout for the Great Falls Voyagers.

I was in Tiffin this weekend Gramps and I picked up the Local paper. There was a nice article about the signing. I was happy to see it. Good luck to Ricardo with the Cards.

Keystone first baseman Yazy Arbelo was named the California League (Single-A Advanced) Offensive Player of the Week for games ending July 8.

Arbelo won the award the week he was sent down from Double-A. He has eight home runs in 17 games to go along with other ridiculous numbers at Single-A Advanced.

The Rays released RPI catcher Pat Reardon.

This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

Like the progressions - 2 IP, then 3, 4, and in the last game, 5 (plus 2 saves in 4 games).  Maybe he'll get a start one of these days.

Mr. Ypsi

I've never heard Brian Rauh's last name pronounced.  I'm guessing it rhymes with 'wow' (which seems strangely appropriate ;)).  Second guess would be 'raw' (which this early in his pro career might also be appropriate).

Anyone know whether I scored a hit?

dahlby

"wow" version is correct as far as I know. That is how everyone at Chapman pronounces it.

Macalester's Mitch Glasser (39th round, White Sox) and Amherst's Kevin Heller (40th round, Red Sox) were among draftees not signed by the deadline.
