Multi-Regional Topics / Re: The Women's Belt
March 16, 2024, 10:10:17 PM
NYU's first defense as holders of the Women's BeltTM ended up successful.  Smith gave a 5 star match to try to claim the baubles, and stayed within single digits for a lot of the contest.

Many people did not think that Smith was worthy of being a "Final Boss" to end the season, but the Pioneers proved up to the challenge.

However the match came to an end when Sofia Rosa of Smith was forced to submit to NYU's suffocating defense.   After Rosa submitted and fouled out, NYU hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and made the cover to not only remain Women's BeltTM champions, but also claim the Big Doorstop-- the NCAA Walnut and Bronze.

The Women's BeltTM travels to the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets in Greenwich Village where it will be based for the summer.   Among the stops on the summer tour, Caroline Peper and the family are planning to make arrangements for the Women's BeltTM to pay a visit to Stonehill in Easton, MA for a few days-- there will be plenty of security on the tour to make sure that no one absconds with the baubles.

Once again, the final BeltTM path for the season was as follows:

2023-24 BeltTM Path

3/18/23:  Transylvania
3/14/24:  New York University

NYU's next title defense will be in November, 2024.  Until then, enjoy the off-season.

Since March 18, 2023, Transylvania successfully defended the Women's BeltTM on 32 successful occasions.

However, tonight, March 14, 2024, in the DIII Women's Basketball Semifinals, the 33rd challenger, NYU, successfully hit Violet Storm ZeroTM and covered for the 1-2-3 pin over Transy to become the new Women's Belt TM champions.

Final score-- NYU 57, Transylvania 42.

In the process, Transylvania's 64 game winning streak, the third longest in NCAA DIII Women's Basketball history, came to an end, and Wash U's 81 game winning streak set from
1998 to 2001 will still stand as the longest DIII Women's Basketball streak for some time to come.

NYU's first title defense will be on Saturday, March 16, 2024, against Smith.  The winner of Saturday's game will not only hold the Women's BeltTM for the summer, but will also claim the Walnut and Bronze from the NCAA.

2023-24 BeltTM Path

3/18/23: Transylvania
3/14/24:  New York University

All NCAA first and second weekend games should be free.  They're owned by the NCAA and not the conference.  You should not need a March Flo subscription.

The March Flo subscription, if I decide to get charged for it (I have until March 8 to cancel the subscription if I do not want another month), would be to watch CWRU softball in the Spring Games (March 10-15) from Florida. (However, the softball Spring Games are usually announcerless.)  There are also early rounds of the Coastal Athletic Association men's and women's basketball tournaments (week of March 8-15) involving Northeastern University and Towson that I may need to have this subscription for the extra 30 days until April.

I had some trouble watching the video of the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball Selection Show on ncaa.com this afternoon.  The show was loaded onto the website on time, but the recorded feed seemed to stop about 5 announced pods in, and I had to reload and start all over again. I finally finished completing my viewing of the show around 3:30 PM Eastern.   Fortunately, Youtube's NCAA Championships channel now has this selection show up as of 3:20 PM Eastern.  (The men's DIII Selection show got dropped onto Youtube as of 1:30 PM Eastern.)

Well, FYI--

The UAA got 3 teams into the women's field this year-- NYU as the AQ, with Wash U and Emory getting Pool C bids.

Due to the men's teams getting priority this year and the seeding of the resumes of the UAA teams that got Pool C bids, no UAA women's basketball teams are hosting pods this weekend.

The first pod announced on the show had NYU going to DeSales's pod in Allentown, PA.

Here is the field for the DeSales pod in Allentown, PA--

1.)  NYU Violets vs Millsaps Majors  (NCAA is flying Millsaps, the SAA AQ, to Allentown, PA to play NYU in the first round.)

2.)  Southern Virginia Knights at DeSales Bulldogs.

The seventh pod announced on the show had Wash U travelling to Carroll's pod in Waukesha, Wisconsin.

Here is the field for the pod in Waukesha, Wisconsin--

1.)  Puget Sound Loggers at Carroll Pioneers
2.)  Wash U Bears vs UW-Stout Blue Devils.

The eighth pod announced on the show had Emory travelling to Transylvania's pod in Lexington, Kentucky, where Emory could potentially be the second round opponent for Transylvania's attempt to get their 62nd straight win and take sole possession of third place for all-time consecutive game winning streaks in DIII Women's hoop.

Here is the field for the pod in Lexington, Kentucky--

1.)  Emory Eagles vs Ohio Wesleyan Battlin' Bishops.
2.)  Chatham Cougars at Transylvania Pioneers.

I watched a game or two on recorded stream of UW-Stout a few days ago.  I now need to get some info of Ohio Wesleyan and Millsaps.

UAA is hosting 3 NCAA DIII Tournament First/Second Round pods this upcoming weekend, and Carnegie Mellon is in and playing at a pod at Catholic University in Washington, DC.

The second pod announced on the selection show confirmed that the UAA got 4 teams in when Carnegie Mellon's name was announced.

Men's teams get priority over women for hosting duties this weekend.

Carnegie Mellon will be headed to Catholic's pod in Washington, DC.   Here is the field for that pod:

1.)  Rowan Profs vs Carnegie Mellon Tartans
2.)  Worcester State Lancers at Catholic Cardinals

The ninth pod announced was the Case Western Reserve pod being played at Horsburgh Gym in Cleveland.

Here is the field for the CWRU pod at Horsburgh Gym in Cleveland this upcoming weekend:

1.)  Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels at CWRU Spartans
2.)  Hope Flying Dutchmen vs Anderson Ravens

The twelfth pod announced was the Wash U pod being played at the Edwards/Fahey Court in the Wash U Field House in St. Louis this weekend--

Here is the field for the Wash U pod--

1.)  Dubuque Spartans vs Illinois College Blue Boys
2.)  Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors at Wash U Bears

The sixteenth and final pod announced was the NYU pod being played at the Paulson Center at the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets in Greenwich Village in New York City this weekend.

Here is the field for the NYU pod--

1.)  Tufts Jumbos vs Stockton Ospreys
2.)  Husson Eagles at NYU Violets

I am looking forward to the commentary from Ron Jantz, Jay Murry, and the NYU student broadcating crew this upcoming weekend on those pods.   Looking forward to some bracket analysis of these pods as well.

Catholic's regular season live webcasts of the home games were exclusive this season to FloSports as part of their Landmark Conference package, with on-demand games being made available for free 72 hours later on Landmark Digital Network.

The Conference package on FloSports costs $15/month to subscribe, but I believe that there is a rule from the NCAA that NCAA DIII basketball tournament games must currently be streamed and available live for free.

In the past, NCAA live basketball tournament games that were played at Rochester were streamed for free while regular season games streamed from the Louis Alexander Palestra required a $7.95 24 hour pass or a $10.95 monthly subscription to watch.

Although I currently am subscribing to FloSports for February and March, I will be cancelling my FloSports subscription for the time being after I get charged for the March subscription. I can reactivate it at any time for the 30 day monthly periods that I need to use the subscription after I cancel. Similarly, I have already cancelled my monthly subscription to Rochester's service, and I have a few weeks left to view on-demand games on that website.

Quote from: Macon on February 23, 2024, 03:43:38 PMThink about this scenario.  If WLU wins out (highly unlikely) in the ODAC tournament, I'd contend that the ODAC gets five teams in.  Maybe a question for Ryan or Pat, but has a single conference ever gotten five teams in the Dance?

I can answer this question, and the answer is Yes!   It happened last year in the 2023 Men's DIII Basketball Tournament-- the UAA got Case Western Reserve in as the AQ, and also got 4 Pool C bids-- NYU, Emory, Wash U, and Rochester.  However, none of them made it to the Sweet 16--the UAA went 2-5 in the first and second rounds.   Last year was the first time since the NESCAC presidents allowed their sports teams to compete for national championships that neither a UAA nor a NESCAC team made it to the Round of 16 in the NCAA DIII Men's Basketball Championship.

BTW, the UAA will not get 5 men's basketball teams in this year-- but as long as at least one makes it to the Sweet 16, I will be satisfied.

Just to confirm the previous message--

I just checked the on-demand replay for the game this morning (4:17 AM ET, Sat. Feb. 24) and Wabash did have technical difficulties on their end getting the stream up and running for the first NCAC semfinal game yesterday.

The on-demand replay does not start until 12:45 left until halftime and with Wittenberg up 12-11 over Wooster in the first half.   Just in case you missed the game live and want to check the game for some highlights, if not to watch the replay in its entirety.

I just watched UW-Stout def. UW-Whitewater in the WIAC semifinals tonight, and after asking if UW-Stout needed to also def. UW-Oshkosh on Friday to become a bid thief, the consensus among women's bracketologists Scott Peterson and Riley Zayas was that UW-Stout became a bid thief tonight by playing their way into a Pool C invite to the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball Tournament if they lose on Friday.  The win tonight over UW-Whitewater gave Stout 2 wins over the #1 ranked team in Region IX-- which is probably enough given Stout's winning pct. and SOS to get one of the 21 Pool C bids on Monday should Stout not be able to get their ticket automatically punched Friday night.

UW-Whitewater is now projected to be the first Pool C invite on Monday, and UW-Oshkosh is a lock for a  Pool C invite on Monday if the Titans need it.

Any thoughts on how the 3 WIAC teams potentially matchup against the top 3 nationally ranked and undefeated teams-- Rhode Island College, Transylvania, or NYU if the NCAA DIII Women's Basketball National Committee p  Having watched a lot of NYU this season, I am confident that NYU can beat any of those 3 WIAC teams.   Not sure about RI College or Transy this year, although Transy has proven in the past that they can compete with their defense anywhere in the country no matter where the game is played.   Also, would any of these matchups potentially happen in the Sweet 16/Elite 8 round, or could they only happen if the matchup is in the Final Four in Columbus, OH?

First of all, I am really glad that D3Boards is back.

Second, I just watched Hoopsville this afternoon where Scott Peterson was on the show talking with Dave McHugh about Pool C "play-in" games where the winner most likely gets a Pool C and the loser could be out of the NCAAs.

First on that list was Chicago at Wash U on Sat. Feb. 24, 2024-- (Sorry, Dave-- Wash U already played at UChicago on January 6. Scott--please check the schedules before you come on air again as to the game site-- but at least you admitted beforehand that you did not check where the game was to be played.)

Second-- I look at my alma mater, the Brandeis women-- if they are a better team than last year, the results do not indicate it.   I personally saw my alma mater got drubbed by 51 points at NYU in the Paulson Center, and when I saw the score at the end of the first quarter when the game was practically over 10 minutes in-- I said to myself that this current year's NYU team reminded me a lot of the Wash U women's teams from 1998 to 2001 that put together an 81 game winning streak.  The 2000-01 Wash U team in their prime (Tasha Rodgers in senior year) could defeat this year's Brandeis team by 45 to 50 points in both games in league play, too-- I strongly believe it.  The old 2000-01 Janice Quinn coached NYU team in their prime could beat this year's Brandeis team by 25 to 30 points on a regular basis, too.

On the results, I saw a Brandeis team that could not stand up to Babson, Tufts, and Roger Williams-- and these teams are not as strong as they were last year, either.  I saw a Brandeis team that lost to Eastern Nazarene, and should have lost to Bridgewater State were it not for the Bears losing focus late in the game and getting overconfident.  With the exception of the Brandeis UAA win at home over Carnegie Mellon, the Brandeis women haven't broken the 60 point barrier in scoring in UAA play all season.

Okay, maybe if Brandeis was a Heartland Conf.team playing Franklin, Defiance, et al, the Judges could get some league wins, but Brandeis would not come close to beating Transylvania this season either.

Current Brandeis acting head coach Jill Latanovich has a future in putting together and coaching a successful DIII women's basketball team-- I am just not sure that it is in this league given her previous playing and coaching experience so far.

I am sick and tired of seeing my alma mater only having the talent, depth, and athleticism to win no more than 1 or 2 games in the UAA in women's hoop and only winning 5 to 6 games overall-- especially after seeing the hey-days of 2006 to 2010 when the Brandeis women made NCAA tournament appearances.

(This is on top of a fall where the Brandeis women's soccer team was only able to score 1 goal in UAA play after going 6-1-3 in non-conference play under coach Mary Shimko-- fortunately, all 7 of Brandeis's UAA Women's soccer opponents made the NCAAs and I still have confidence in the management of the Brandeis women's soccer team.)

(Also, the Brandeis women's volleyball team only regularly wins just 1 or 2 UAA matches a year, too-- but I don't focus on volleyball.)

Obviously, I do not want Carol Simon back coaching this team either, especially after seeing that investigation into her conduct being revealed by Deadspin first hand last summer and not getting any public comment from Brandeis itself.   The lack of commentary from the Brandeis adminstration on this issue is speaking volumes.

I am sorry-- but this year, I have been more focused on watching the NYU women dominate this tough UAA on live-stream during the times when women's play has been going on, and on Saturday, the NYU women will most likely become the first UAA basketball team from the Eastern Time Zone-- men or women--to go  a perfect undefeated 14-0 in UAA play.   The accomplishment will be the 8th time in UAA women's basketball history since the founding of the UAA back in 1986-87, and the start of UAA play in 1987-88.

The previous 7 perfect UAA women's basketball seasons in league play--

1.)  1989-1990:  Wash U Bears-- 14-0  (Double round-robin wins over UChicago, NYU, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, and Emory-- single round-robin wins over CWRU and Johns Hopkins.)  Head coach:  Nancy Fahey.

2.)  1998-1999:  Wash U Bears-- 14-0  (Same schedule as the 1989-1990 season)  Head coach:  Nancy Fahey.

3.)  1999-2000:  Wash U Bears-- 15-0  (Double round-robin wins over UChicago, NYU, Brandeis, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester, Emory, and CWRU-- single round-robin win over Johns Hopkins.)   Head coach:  Nancy Fahey.

(UAA charter member Johns Hopkins leaves the UAA after the 2000-01 season to stay in the Centennial Conference.)

4.)  2001-02:  Wash U Bears-- 14-0  (First season under the current double-round robin format)--

Head coach: Nancy Fahey

5.)  2010-11:  U. Chicago Maroons-- 14-0 in UAA play.  Head coach:  Aaron Roussell
5.)  2011-12:  U. Chicago Maroons-- 14-0 in UAA play.  Head coach:  Aaron Roussell

7.)  2017-18:  U. Chicago Maroons-- 14-0 in UAA play.  Head coach:  Carissa Sain (then married as known as Carissa Sain-Knoche.)

Whereabouts of these coaches who accomplished the feat as of present:

1.)  Nancy Fahey-- member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame-- retired from coaching at the end of the 2021-22 season after 5 years coaching in the D-I Big Ten at Illinois.)

2.)  Aaron Roussell-- current coach of the Richmond Spiders in the D-I Atlantic 10.

3.)  Carissa Sain-- current coach of DIII Illinois Tech in the NACC.

After an eventful season of UAA action, the men's basketball AQ comes down to the final day of play on Saturday.

Here are the scenarios:

1.) CWRU defeats Carnegie Mellon-- CWRU clinches the Pool A AQ no matter what the outcome is of the NYU and Brandeis game. In that case, a Brandeis win would make CWRU outright UAA Men's Basketball Champions, while an NYU win would make CWRU and NYU Men's Basketball Co-Champions, with CWRU winning the AQ by means of the second tiebreaker by posting a 1-1 result vs third place Carnegie Mellon, while NYU went 0-2 vs the Tartans.

2.) NYU wins over Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon wins-- NYU would be outright UAA Men's Basketball Champion and getthe AQ.

3.) Carnegie Mellon wins over CWRU and Brandeis wins over NYU-- Carnegie Mellon, CWRU, and NYU would be UAA Men's Basketball Co-Champions, and Carnegie Mellon would get the AQ by virtue of first tiebreaker-- a 4-0 head to head sweep vs CWRU and NYU.

Finally!  D3Boards is back after 2 months out of service.   Trying to react via posting on X was quite a challenge.

Anyway, This season so far has been a whirlwind of excitement every weekend.

On the first weekend, I fulfilled a promise of mine to personally travel to NYU and watch a doubleheader in person at the new Paulson Center at the corner of Bleecker and Mercer Streets.  The new court at NYU is worth the trip-- FYI, NYU is now the only UAA campus where the primary basketball court and the primary volleyball court are kept separate and dedicated to each individual use.  The stands can be configured one way if there is a volleyball event, and reconfigured a separate way if there is a basketball event.  You enter the athletic part of the facility literally at the corner of Bleecker and Mercer in Greenwich Village, where the tickets go on sale in a separately set table from the security gates 1 hour before tip.  You make your $10 ticket purchase by tapping a credit card onto a portable machine, get your physical ticket, and then proceed through the security gate.  Once past the gates, you either go down the stairs or take the elevator to the "sub-cellar" where the new basketball court is located.

One drawback with the new building is that you cannot see the basketball court from the surface the way that you could when you entered the old Coles Center.  However, the new video scoreboards more than make up for it.   I don't know whether this has been the case every weekend of UAA competition so far, but NYU set up the fencing multi-purpose locker room up on the surface level (next to the cardio floor) for the visiting team's alumni reception room.  It took me a while to find the reception room, but during halftime of the women's game, I finally found it and was able to enjoy the catering spread, which included pizza for the second game.

A separate snack bar is available near courtside where snacks can be purchased by also tapping a credit card onto a machine.

Memories of my brief visit to NYU on Saturday, Jan. 6--

1.)  I slept at home in my apartment on Friday evening and then took at 5:30 AM Lyft to the Amtrak Route 128 station in Westwood, MA.

2.)  I took the 6:50 AM Amtrak Northeast Regional train to New York-- got to Moynihan Train Hall at 10:45 AM.

3.)  Walked to Arby's at 8th Avenue and 39th Street for a classic roast beef lunch-- first time in years that I was able to have lunch at Arby's.  In Massachusetts, there are only 2 Arby's restaurants remaining, and the closest one is in the Worcester area-- too far to regularly go there to eat.

4.)  Tapped my credit card for a $2.90 subway ride to Broadway and Lafayette Station-- short walk from there to 181 Mercer Street.

5.)  Some mixed precip started falling in Manhattan during the second game-- so after the doubleheader, I walked back to Broadway and Lafayette subway station and made the long trek to get through the station and connect to the uptown platform for the 6 line at Bleecker Street subway station.

6.)  Took the 6 train to Grand Central Terminal and then got on the Metro North train to Stamford, CT, where I spent the night at the Red carpet Inn.  Moderate snow was falling in Stamford when I got there around 7:30 PM, which made the short 2 mile bus ride a little slow going.  Got to the inn and checked in just after 8 PM and went to bed.

9.)  Checked out just before 7:30 AM ET on Sunday and took the bus to downtown Darien CT where I had breakfast at Dunkin.   I then took Metro North back to Stamford and then connected to the returning Amtrak Northeast Regional train back to Route 128 Station where a friend picked me up for the short ride home.

Total cost of trip-- train tickets, subway fare, commuter rail fare, breakfast, lunch, game ticket, and room for night-- approx. $160.00.  I bought the Amtrak tickets just before Labor Day last year, and it was worth it since I had not been to New York City in years.

I still have my game ticket and 76 page game program from the event-- I may consider having the program autographed on Saturday when NYU makes the return visit to Brandeis to conclude the season.

I have watched some of the 3 UHartford women's soccer road games played so far this season-- especially UHartford's wins at nationally ranked Montclair State and at nationally ranked Emory.

Fortunately for both Montclair State and Emory, as UHartford is reclassifying from DI to DIII and is playing a DIII schedule for the first time this season, results vs UHartford do not count in the primary criteria for selection to the NCAA DIII tournament this season.

Moreover, UHartford is not eliglible for either the Commonwealth Coast Conference title or a bid to the NCAA DIII tournament as it is the Hawks's first year playing a DIII schedule and UHartford will not become a full DIII member until the 2025-26 season.

UHartford is a Commonwealth Coast Conference member this season and will play against all of the current full member CCC opponents, however the Commonwealth Coast Conference has determined that games between other CCC teams and UHartford will only be considered as non-conference games this year and will not count in the CCC standings for purposes of conference tournament seeding.

As part of the reclassification process from DI, returning juniors, seniors, and grad students on the UHartford roster this year can play this season under an athletic scholarship (unless they joined the team in the 2022-23 season without an athletic scholarship as an incoming student), but freshmen, sophomores, and incoming transfer students playing for UHartford cannot play on an athletic scholarship.    Beginning in 2024-25, no player on UHartford can compete for the Hawks on an athletic scholarship-- their packages will have to be re-tailored to academic and need-based financial aid if they wish to still compete for UHartford.

So, it will be interesting to see if the UHartford women's soccer team could get an undefeated regular season vs the CCC opponents, but the real test will be two years from now, as there is no postseason this year for UHartford.   I am writing this post because the student commentators for Montclair State and Emory were confused by the #1 Massey rating for UHartford on the current DIII Massey ratings and thought that UHartford may be eligible for the DIII tournament this season-- the answer to that question is no-- UHartford cannot compete for the national DIII championship in any sport until the 2025-26 academic year.

BTW, the coaches picked Western New England as the favorite to repeat as CCC women's soccer champions going into league play.

Men's soccer / Re: New England Soccer Discussion

I guess UHartford is trying to find out what it means to be a DIII institution.    It is not helping matters that UHartford is placing all of their home games for all of their teams behind a paywall at $9.99 for a single game and no affordable monthly rate.  UHartford is charging $49.99 for all of their home games for the fall season, $99.99 for an early bird rate for all home games for the full academic year (if paid before September 15) and $129.99 for all of the home games for all seasons of the 2023-24 academic year (if paid after September 15)   I wanted to see Conn College men's soccer at UHart this afternoon, but I guess that I am going to have to follow the game on live stats. The worst part about it is, you are not aware that there is a paywall up until you start attempting to watch the UHartford video livestream.  I am only going to pay for Univ. of Rochester content this year on a regular basis, if I do decide to pay for DIII content.

Something came up on the NCAA DIII Softball Announcement, and I do not know whether or not it was a mistake, or if something happened to St. Elizabeth that made the softball team unable to compete in the NCAA DIII Tournament this year, but when the bracket just got announced, Rosemont was announced as the representative of the Colonial States Athletic Conference to this year's tournament instead of St. Elizabeth, and Rosemont will be travelling to face Berry in the pod at Mary Hardin-Baylor.  UMHB will play St. Thomas (TX) in the 4 team double elimination pod.

Anyway, here are the at-large picks:

Pool B-- Salisbury

Pool C--

1.)  Eastern Conn. State
2.)  Lebanon Valley
3.)  Virginia Wesleyan
4.)  Christopher Newport
5.)  Roanoke
6.)  UW-Whitewater
7.)  Coe
8.)  Ramapo
9.)  Rowan
10.)  Marietta
11.)  Tufts
12.)  RPI
13.)  UW-Oshkosh
14.)  Luther
15.)  Central (IA)
16.)  Mary Hardin-Baylor
17.)  Texas Lutheran
18.)  Belhaven

Also, in a last minute announcement, Rosemont is replacing St. Elizabeth as the CSAC AQ, as apparently St. Elizabeth is unable to compete in this year's NCAA DIII Softball Tournament due to undisclosed circumstances.
