The NCAC has the kinds of schools Oberlin wants to associate itself with and the HCAC doesn't. It's really just as simple as that.

Frankly I've always thought of Oberlin as the least likely college to sponsor football that does have a football program. Surprised it still exists. It would be like Bard or Reed hitting the gridiron.

Hey so how's that 70 point beatdown the Midwest folks were declaring a fait accompli going?

Cortland wins the national championship. Simply unbelievable, what a tremendous football game. Congrats Dragons.

Buffalo State coach Fajri Ansari announced his retirement on Thursday, effective at season's end. The Bengals have really fallen on hard times the last six seasons.

Congrats to Cortland, what a beatdown they handed out down in Virginia today.

It's a Bard world and we're all just living in it, apparently

Not D3 or even football related really, but sad news in higher education in upstate New York as Saint Rose will close at school year's end. 87 vacant properties to be left behind in the Pine Hills neighborhood of Albany.

SUNY Poly from NAC to Empire 8 next season.

NAC West division now seems untenable for Delhi and Cobleskill, wonder what their plans are.

Talk about a turn of events. And no kidding with the NAC West being a bit unbalanced compared to the NAC East.

And out of hindsight, but who knows if these SUNY schools would someday apply to join the SUNYAC; while the NAC refocuses on being a New England-based conference?
Open question to knowledgeable fans from NY...

Is Morrisville State a "mission-and-vision" match for the E8 in more sports than football? Would the E8 extend an invitation to full membership to Morrisville, now that SUNY-Poly is moving?

Morrisville already accepted a SUNYAC invite along with Canton. That train left the station.

Perhaps the 2019 total is wrong, because if he only played four, he would have been able to get a medical hardship year.

Sometimes games played totals are incorrect because someone hit the wrong keystroke on the stats program, or put in a starting lineup from the two-deep without checking to see if that person actually took the field.

I think it was the Salisbury playoff game where he's credited with a tackle on his individual stats page but in the actual box score/play by play from that game on the Union website, he doesn't appear.

Can anyone make this make senss from the Cortland recap?

Here's recap headline...

#6 Cortland Ties for 9th After Setback Against #3 Middlebury in NCAA 3rd Round

And then text from the recap...

AMHERST, MASS. -- The nationally third-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team scored four unanswered goals spanning the first and second halves in earning a come-from-behind 4-2 win against sixth-ranked Cortland Saturday afternoon in the third round of the NCAA Div. III playoffs hosted by Amherst College. The Red Dragons concluded the season with a 16-3-3 record and tied for ninth nationally. The Panthers improved to 15-1-4.

On what basis is there a conclusion that Cortland finishes in 9th place?  Reached their own conclusion that they are the highest ranked team not to make the Elite 8 so that somehow by definition makes them 9th?  I realize the coach poll does operate kind of like this, but I'm not sure how Cortland could already know or predict an exact placement in a final, final poll.

I think their argument is that 8 teams advanced to the Elite Eight, so they are tied (with 8 other Sweet 16 losers) for 9th place.  It's not a polling issue, nor were they saying they were the best of the Sweet 16 losers.

That makes sense....just seems like a very odd construction and choice of headline.  An unofficial "we tied for 9th" with seven other teams?

I have noticed Cortland write this way after a number of their other sports have been knocked out of the NCAA Tournament. They make the postseason in about a dozen sports per year so it happens quite a lot. It's a stylistic choice of their SID, who has been there for decades and is considered among the most respected folks in the industry.

My question would be does UST's success as a D1 program help or hurt SJU remaining as a D3 school?

It makes it very tempting for the weak minded. "Derrrrr, the Toms did it... so that means Johnnies can do it more gooder!"

Thankfully, I think we are a more resolute bunch and won't go chasing D1 fool's gold. Plus, SJU simply doesn't have the endowment to burn like UST to make that kind of jump. That reality alone keeps those evil D1 thoughts away.

Division I bylaws also prohibit single gender institutions. SJU could theoretically move to D2, but not D1 unless that rule gets voted out at the NCAA convention one of these years.

Obviously they're not in the SUNYAC anymore but those that recall SUNY Poly (fka SUNYIT) will remember the name Kevin Grimmer, he was synonymous not only with their MBB program but all Wildcats athletics. Apparently he passed away on Monday, too young. RIP.
