SNC nearly blows a 15-pt HT lead at Oshkosh and survives 59-57.

Watched the WIAC stream.

Unusual game in that both Quinn Steckbauer and Will Mahoney, the two season leading scorers for the Titans, played sparingly and I don't think at all in the last 10 minutes.  Could be injury or illness. Freshman and sophomores at the end, and they played well. Only senior on the court was Gunnink. I am sure Coach Matt Lewis had a plan. Without an announcer to explain what was going on, the last few minutes of Whistlepalooza was confusing. Might need to watch again.

One other rules question for the board....remember some years back when jump shooters would flail their legs out to attempt to garner fouls?  SNC had one shooter who did it extensively, at least 5x. Wasn't that outlawed, never see it anymore at D3 level. Wasn't effective but sure was obvious.

This officiating crew, that does some WIAC games, needs some practice. I don't think either coach or fan base will be giving them good marks.

Flopping is illegal too and UW-0 almost got away with forcing overtime as a result. I do agree though that the officiating crew was in over their head. That's the best the WIAC can come up with?

Big win for Norbs tonight over a quality CUC team. NACC will be very competitive this year.

I'm just making an observation. I guess I should have known better than to try to match knowledge with a haughty UWSP fan. My bad.

Is that a 1998 reference?

What was in 1998? I'm guessing, since I'm a Pointer fan, he's probably referencing Semling. Regardless, apparently not all of us have moved on from that. I guess, in some round-about way, snc thought it was a good time to take a shot. IDK, whatever.

If my hazy memory is correct, Pat was referring to a St. Norbert football deal where it ran into trouble for violating a conference rule for going over the games limit, not an NCAA one.

As for the probation jab, poke fun at a post and fire will occasionally be returned.

St. Norbert finished their trip to Italy with a 3-0 record. You never know the caliber of competition on those trips but it's a good sign they'll be able to keep their momentum from this year's run into next season.

I don't think if they start off 10-0 next season, they'll look back at the Italy trip as a catalyst to their good start. LOL.

That may be, but thanks to the foreign trip at least St. Norbert won't end up on probation for their out of season practices.

UWSP Head Coach, Men's Basketball job was posted today, Applications open through 11:59 March 27th.

Anticipated Appointment Date is May 1.

https://www3.uwsp.edu/hr/jobs/Pages/AcademicJobView.aspx?UWSPJobsCode=19453

Less than a week before the deadline. Any names surfacing? Does anyone think SNC's Gary Grzesk would be interested? I know his name always pops up when the GB job is available (2 times in recent years, it seems). I'm not sure if he's applied there, got turned down or wasn't interested.

Honestly, I don't even know moving from a private school to a public school is even a step up (maybe even a pay cut). I'm presuming coaching in the WIAC against the likes of some of the big boys is more attractive than going up against some of the NACC teams, although their recent move to the NACC is a step up from the MWC. I think SNC is trying to get a foothold in the Milwaukee and Chicago area recruiting circuit.

Grzesk won't consider Point for numerous reasons. SNC has been recruiting Milwaukee and Chicago (old Metro Conference and Chicago Catholic League) since World War II ended.

Of course they have. Point being, if they are trying to recruit a kid from the Milwaukee area, SNC plays MSOE, Concordia WI,  and Wisconsin Lutheran all in the vicinity of the Greater Milwaukee Area where friends and family can come and watch without driving 2+ hours north to DePere. Lakeland, Edgewood, Marian are all an hour away.

Only a very small factor in recruiting IMO.

Players needing to be hospitalized after a workout seems to be a fairly uncommon occurence these days.

CUC postpones games Tuesday and now tomorrow. Do the CUC posters in here know what's going on?

The Lakeland Muskies might be the most balanced team the NACC has seen in a while. SIX different players now avg. between 15.2ppg and 10.1ppg. Five of them can really shot the 3!!

Did you come to that conclusion before or after Lakeland scored 56 points against St. Norbert?

Bullis was an associate head coach during at least a portion of Liepold's tenure.  He was also Defensive Coordinator so the idea that he wasn't prepared to be a head coach is nonsense.  No one from Mount Union was a finalist for the HC job.  Finalists included Bullis, Rob Erickson, Dave Traynor, Erik Raeburn and Dean Paul.  I know for certain that Liepold offered Bullis the opportunity to go to Buffalo with him and Bullis declined.  His retirement has nothing to do with this season and/or any perceived decline in the WARHAWKS football program.  Some of us have been waiting for the announcement.

The football program has a pastor. They have for years.  He is present with the team home and away on game day.

Since meeting him and watching him turn Jeff Donovan into one of our best I've thought Jim Zembrowski was a really good coach.  I was disappointed when he left.  However after the experiences he's had since then I kind of doubt he'd come back to DIII.   I have a hunch who'll be the next coach but we'll wait and see.  I'm anxious to see who would apply.

Jagz?

Does anyone know, has any WIAC team given up more points in a conference game than than the 73 the Blugolds allowed Stout today?

We've had a couple of losses by larger margins.  1889 106-0 vs UW, 1900 100-0 vs UW.  One that ties, 1984 73-7, vs Northern Iowa and one pretty close, 1976 70-14, vs Northern Michigan.

No probably really nothing in the "modern era" between two conference opponents. We've got Whitewater coming in next week for Homecoming.  I'm guessing the Warhawks put up 40 in the first half.

I recall Stevens Point squashing Oshkosh 76-6 around 1993 or so.

Why does EC struggle? Seems like everything is there to get it competitive. Good school in a nice city with a great atmosphere for home games.

Facilities.  Their band makes the atmosphere fun at Carson Park, but it is owned by the City of Eau Claire and not located on campus.  Also, they have not kept up with some other schools in the conference in investing in their program compared to some of the other schools. I don't know if the administration is committed to an excellent athletic program or not, but my understanding is that they don't put the resources toward it other schools do.

Talk is they are planning to bring football to campus in the next few years. The new AD we got a few years ago was supposed to be a big football proponent and I think there was a lot of optimism when we brought Beschorner in. We were trending up a bit and even pulled of the upset against St. Thomas in 2019, but it's been pretty rough since then.

They have a new arena they are building off campus with Mayo Clinic that will be a new home for the basketball teams. They've also added sports in recent years. Baseball returned 2 years ago after being dropped in 1995. They added men's soccer last year and they also now have women's lacrosse. I would not be surprised if they follow UWSP and bring women's wrestling into the fold within the next few years.

Not sure what type of contract Beschorner is on, but if things don't start trending upward by the end of next season I think changes will be made. From what I've heard from talking with some of my connections it doesn't seem like our AD will be content with this type of production.

I'm not sure how much I buy the fact Carson Park is off campus being a factor since the new basketball arena is being built across from the entrance to Carson Park. The hockey team, which has won a national title, also plays just down the street from there.
