Lumbercat.... agreed on McCrum...   he wasn't great this year, but he hadn't played live in over 2 years.  You could see flashes.  And, he started developing great rapport with some of the young receivers.  He's got 2 years left and will be just fine.  Word out of Brunswick however, was that he was not a big fan of the new "QB Coach"  they brought in from Waterville.   Hoping he's not one of the 5 of 7 that get 'retained'!!

Agreed -- McCrum was basically a freshman in terms of game experience (and a very rusty freshman). Last time he played competitively was in the fall of 2015 - lots of practices between 2015 and 2018 but no game action. Hears hoping that those flashes become a more regular thing because they definitely were there . . Lord only knows why that "QB coach" was brought in . .

McCrum played well in  Jayvee games at Lafayette and adapted well in that system.  His progress took place before a total coaching and program flush. He was #2 on the Spring depth chart at one point but the new HC had his own guys.

When he got to Bowdoin there was some concern as camp progressed with his throwing mechanics which sent the Bears staff for a loop in pre season. Stalcup was back in play as a QB.

Believe it was Michaeles charge to work closely with the kid as QB coach. After the kid threw a number of INTS it looked like he was trying to aim it or steer it.....watching the kid you wanted to tell him to just let let it rip and don't worry about the outcome but thats easier said than done.

The new HC will be bringing in his own OC to work with McCrum. He will be very good with the right tutelage.

I seem to recall Middlebury's last two D1 transfer QBs working out pretty well, though ... that being said, yeah, there are plenty of D1 transfers (at all positions) who amount to very little at NESCAC.  Indeed, Trinity's very hyped D1 transfer QB ultimately lost his job to a (really good) first year.

People seem to forget that Vazzano was having an very good season for Trinity (leading the NESCAC in TD passes) before being injured prior to the week 6 game at Bowdoin. Indeed, Lambert played incredibly well for a first year player filling-in, but it's worth noting that Vazzano didn't even dress until the final game of the season so I'm not sure it's fair to categorize it as losing his job.

For anyone interested; here a link to a video including hightlights of Trinity's NESCAC threepeat: https://vimeo.com/302907501

Vazzano completed under 44 percent of his passes on the year, despite throwing to the best WR pairing in the league.  Also, three of his five games were against three of the four worst teams in the league.  Regarding the other two, against Williams, he went 14-43 with 1 TD and 2 INT.  Against Tufts, 10-19 with 1 TD and 1 INT.  Lambert on the other hand completed 69 percent of his passes, with only one game against the bottom group of NESCAC teams.  However you want to categorize it, Vazzano wasn't one of the better (certainly not in the top 5) QBs in NESCAC when he got hurt, especially considering the talent around him on offense (also the best RB in the league).

At the end of this season Vazzano had in fact lost the starting job. Lambert played poorly in the first half of the Worsleyan game and the coaching staff stuck with him. They could have made a change and didn't.

Next season is a total different story. These guys are going to be competing for the starting job come August. Given their talent level it would not surprise me if they both get valuable PT.

Nescac1, I agree that Lambert played better as the starter. However, the fact remains that Vazanno wasn't benched in favor of the rookie, which was the point I was making. I would put both Trin QBs in the top 5 of the league. Yes, Vazanno had a below average completion percentage but he averaged 265 yards per game (best in the league) and 12 TDs to just 4 picks in his 5 games.

JoeBag, I'm not surprised to hear that it will be an open competition next season. That should hopefully bring out the best in both of the competitors.

I'd say that McDonald, Eberth, Maimaron, and Piccirillo were clearly (in some order) the top four QBs in NESCAC last year.  I think the next few slots are a close call between Kenny Gray, Lambert, Hersch, Costa and sure maybe Vazanno.  A lot of dudes could put up big numbers throwing to those two monsters, with the threat of an all-timer in the backfield to keep defenses honest, and behind Trinity's offensive line.

Going back to the original discussion. the record of D1 transfers to NESCAC at the QB is mixed.  Foy (who as noted had bad injury luck), Foote and Leibowitz were big-timers, three of the more talented QBs in recent years, especially the two Midd guys.  I'd put Vazzano in the group along with the Austin Lommen and McCrum who had more mixed results (actually along with another Trinity transfer from UVA who I recall being pretty good and splitting time with other QBs).  And a few guys never made it off the bench over the years.  So, I guess it's hard to generalize ...

Good points, NESCAC 1 and I agree with your assessment of the D1 transfers.  Even though the three that you mentioned had big impacts on NESCAC, it strikes me that, given the mixed results of D1 transfers overall, it speaks to the high quality of NESCAC football.

Billy Schweitzer was the Trinity transfer QB from UVA. He sat for a year and then had some injury issues, eventually splitting time with Josh Pitcher. Neither was asked to do all that much because Trinity had such dominant running teams and defenses during their '03, '04, and '05 undefeated seasons.

Pitcher was a career 59% passer with 15 TDs to 5 INTs in 23 games. Schweitzer completed 57% of passes with 9 TDs to 7 INTs in 13 games.

Gotta give you credit on that post- nice one.

Good info harlequinfarm!  Williams could really use more big bodies on both lines, as there aren't a lot of really massive guys on the returning roster, and Zapf in particular looks like just what the doctor ordered -- 6'6, 260, from a strong program, and seems that he received a few higher-level offers.  Along with John Freeman, the 6'5, 280 Eph commit from BC High, perhaps the bookend tackles of the future?  Or maybe one could help out at NT.

Happy holidays to all and in the new year may your fumbles be recovered.
