ALMA, please don't leave your great effort in Alliance.  Bring it again and again....

This is my great fear and hope, as well. Winning at Alliance is awesome, but if they lay an egg back in Alma, the narrative will forever be about Mount's miscues and fourth quarter collapse and not Alma's opportunistic victory. I really hope they're able to win at home against a very good Cortland team and then show well against Johns Hopkins or Randolph Macon. It would be so cool to get a home quarterfinal win and have everyone talking about Alma's magical season and not Mount's second second-round exit in 5 years.

Your great fear? Come on. Alma went down and scored 24 pts in the last 10 minutes against one of the best programs in the history of DIII. Hope could only imagine. Alma isn't playing for you.

Alma is the real deal...or Trine isn't...probably a combination of the 2.  Alma 40 Trine 21.  Alma has a couple of terrific Freshman that were the players of the game.  QB Carter St. John has very good accuracy.  Trine's secondary played very soft and let Alma throw the ball in the flat all day.  It was easy pitch and catch and our defensive staff was stubborn to make any adjustments.  RB Eddie Williams is also outsanding with good quickness and shiftiness.  Alma's defense is very good at creating turnovers and had 4 today plus a sack of Trine QB Alex Price in the end zone for a safety.  This result will undoubtedly open a lot of eyes in the rest of the conference.

Carter is the son of former K bball PG Steve St. John.  Finally won the starting job going into this week.

I'm a Haslett grad and this is such tough news. Bart and Bret reffed many HS and College games I was a part of.  Every time I'd come back he was ways quick for a conversation. Massive loss for the Haslett community.

Moneyball Pro-Am summer league kicks off Thursday in Lansing at the Summit  (I96 and Lansing Rd)

A Few MIAA guys playing

Tracy Edmond  -Olivet?-    --Team Definition   (curiously listed as LCC '16 on roster)
Caleb Hoekstra -Hope-     --Team Glory
Preston Laketa -Alma-      --Team Glory
Zach Winston -Albion-      --Team Quicksilver   (playing with older brother Cassius Winston)
Michael Fomby -Olivet-     --Team Quicksilver
Bryan Dutton -Olivet '10-  --Team Quicksilver
Harrison Gilstrap -Olivet-   --Team Showtime
Forest Bouyer -Calvin-      --Team Vintage

Each of the six teams has 2 MSU Spartans on it.  MIAA guys usually don't get much run in this but its fun to watch the MSU guys play in a small setting.  No Miles Bridges this year so probably less of a madhouse, but I suppose Loyer and Bingham might bring some folks out.  Some of the lesser known guys can really play.

Free basketball, Tuesday/Thursday nights 6,7 and 8pm

We had a Kzoo squad at Aim High (back at the old Walter French) for two summers. Great playing against current and former Spartans as well as other DIs from the area.  I enjoyed watching Brian Ellison kick Jon Garavaglia's ass up and down the court one game.

I'm sorry, but as a Christian I can not condone hating my rivals or wishing them I'll will. Sure, I hope Calvin loses at times because it helps Hope, but I still cheer them on in the national tournaments. As a proud member of the Spartan nation I bleed green and white when I'm not bleeding orange and blue, and I don't enjoy seeing the Wolverines and Buckeyes getting all these four and five star football recruits because it hurts MSU, but I still cheer for OSU in the college football playoffs (and I'll cheer for U of M if they ever get that good again). I just don't understand how people can claim to devoutly believe in the word of God and then go out and wish I'll will upon somebody simply because they go to "that" school. What ever happened to Christian love? When did rivals become enemies? And when did it become okay to judge others simply for the school they chose to attend?

Excuse me while I clean up the coffee that just came out of my nose.  #GoAuggie/Augie

In this case, the correct call on the floor would have been no basket. Then, if replay were available, the correct call would have been to change it to count the basket. (Replay was not available for this game.)

So, my conclusion is that the officials made the correct call by making an incorrect call!

I was watching from home and was expecting a replay, immediately thinking back to the 2001 Olivet game at the Rolla Dome and Kevin Baird's (eventual) winning jumper.   I'd say Hornets are fortunate not to have a replay system.

Was Stuive called for an inbounds violation, or did a Hanover defender deflect the inbounds pass back at him while he was out of bounds? It was impossible to tell from the live feed, and the replay kept cutting off before the play actually happened. The PBP guy never did make the call, other than to say that Stuive had turned it over.

It looked to me that the ref called that Stuive hadn't established  himself inbounds when he caught the deflected ball.  It was definitely close.

Article from this past January about Jay Smith and his playing days at Mio-Au Sable.  http://www.mlive.com/sports/bay-city/index.ssf/2016/02/all-time_greats_mios_jay_smith.html

I get a kick out of the poll at the bottom asking who the best Bay City area basketball player of all-time was.  The "winner" I guess is from Mio which is 74 miles away from Bay City and it isn't Jay Smith.   Eric DuFort's name makes an appearance on that list, he played at Albion a number of years ago.

Ty McGregor was a great HS player.  Mio won the '89 Class D title on his back.

As a side note I would very much like to be in the room when Kzoo AD Kristen Smith explains to Jay what it takes to earn an NCAA bid at this level after having spent the last 30 years of his coaching career in D1 and D2.

Take a coach with no prior experience at the D3 level either as a coach or as a player, and add to that the fact that he has prior experience as a head coach at both the D1 and D2 levels on his résumé (together with a certain amount of success at both), and you can't help but wonder what's going on in the back of his mind as he accepts this job. Given the disdain in which D3 is regarded by the scholarship levels, and the general sense that D3 is a coaching steppingstone rather than a destination (unless you're D3 born and bred, as it were), does he feel as though he's been relegated to the minor leagues in his mid-'50s?

Perhaps he's one of those coaches for whom basketball is basketball, regardless of the level, and he views this as simply an opportunity to sit first chair again for a college program. For Kalamazoo's sake, I hope that this is the case. On the other hand, for a lot of coaches with that kind of a career path the sentiment behind this move might be akin to the opinion expressed by Satan in Book One, Line 263 of Milton's Paradise Lost.  :o

Or could it be that of Achilles in Homer's Odyssey 11.489-91? :o

Both of which could explain his quick departure from GVSU?

"He still stomps to get his players' attention..."  Yeah, but does he flop on the floor on his back waving his arms and legs in a Haklin-esque manner?  :)  This could be a fun season!  I kinda miss Joe.

We all miss Joe.

A little insight for what it's worth...  Dougal lost this team during the past offseason and early into the latest season.    He brought in a number transfers and signed some good players who were not academically ready for Kalamazoo.   He failed to make it clear what the plan was.  He tried to implement a higher paced offense but their defense suffered from how it was implemented.  Players talked of very long film sessions (3 hours to review 9 minutes of game time).   The "academic" scholarships to some of these players were part of the reason for the NCAA sanctions.   It wasn't well publicized but one player left the team early in the season due to a conflict with Dougal, another was removed from the team for a few games for insubordination, a few freshmen were sat down for a few games for conduct violations, the substitution patterns during the games became more and more random as the year went on and he looked to stabilize a team where a lot of the players did not want to play for him.  As a parent of one of the players (in case that wasn't obvious), I liked Dougal when I met him but it became clear at the start of this year that he did not have a vision for what the identity of the team would be and how he would get them there.

Here is an excerpt from an email from Kalamazoo

"We have determined that six teams will not be repackaged and the students and coaches have been informed of our decisions.

The following teams will NOT be repackaged:
Women's Volleyball
Women's Lacrosse
Women's Basketball
Women's Softball
Men's Football
Men's Basketball

All of the students on the non-repackaged teams will keep their current financial aid awards. The teams listed above will not be eligible for postseason play and championship consideration as long as anyone on the roster has financial aid that was awarded through a process not compliant with NCAA rules.

By the 2018/19 academic year, we anticipate Women's Basketball, Women's Softball, Men's Football and Men's Basketball will be eligible. In the fall, we will reevaluate Women's Lacrosse and Women's Volleyball's eligibility for the 2017/18 academic year. "

I think Coach Dougal is a great guy and have always enjoyed my interactions with him.  I wish him all the best.

Kzoo99, your insight sounds like immature kids who can't take the heat.  One, admissions is the ultimate decision maker on who is academically ready for K.  Second, Coach has every right to sit kids for "insubordination" or conduct violations. It's called accountability. I don't want to get into a rant about "kids these days' , but damn.

That said, 3 wins is unacceptable.  The lack of success since Coach Haklin is unacceptable.  Being a coach at K is a tough job.  Smokin' Joe showed you can compete and win.   It takes tenacious recruiting and it's not for everyone.  K needs classes with 1-2  very good players surrounded by a secondary group where 1-2 might emerge as productive players.  K needs to hire someone that is going to work tirelessly to find them.  I don't know if Coach Dougal did that or not.  But only bringing in 4 kids in a class won't cut it.

I'm realistic.  I know that K isn't going to win the MIAA every year. But getting into the MIAA tournament should absolutely be a standard and every couple years, you never know.....

As a Hornet alumnus, yesterday was certainly a disappointing day.  The one thing I can take solace in is that the NCAA found there was NO intention to circumvent the rules.  However, I never imagined K would find themselves in this situation.

Also, in reading the report,  baseball coach Mike Ott certainly pushed the boundaries with emails to recruits and wording in regards to financial aid.
