Dumb question probably, but I noticed this footnote on ASC baseball standings page.

https://ascsports.org/standings.aspx?path=baseball

It says that Sul Ross is "Ineligible for ASC and NCAA Championships (NCAA Division II reclassifying)."  Wouldn't UT Dallas also be ineligible?  Didn't UT Tyler win the national championship the year before they reclassified?  Why would Sul Ross be treated differently?

Trinity might have broken a couple of single-game school records today for team total offense (710) and team passing offense (560).  And tied the Team Passing TD mark of 7.   The most I can find from the SCAC era are 701 yards in total offense against Redlands in 2004 and 510 passing yards against Gustavus in 2001.

If competitive balance is the primary factor in what's happening with the ASC, it would being interesting to know what changes might have been implemented to alleviate that issue some years back.  Maybe conference-imposed mandates could have helped.  Some ideas:  Roster limits, in-conference transfer restrictions,  GPA requirements.  I'm sure there are others.

MJ Metz has homered in 5 straight games for Duke.  Somehow, he was only 2nd team all-conference in the SCAC last year.

Still an opportunity to cyber squat on the ASCAC domain.  http://www.ascac.com/

Well, looks like Lyon won't have to worry about that trip to Michigan.

Against that schedule, Lyon has a chance to go 4-4 against d3 opponents, so their SOS impact would be marginal.  It would be better than a bye week or NAIA fill-in.

An observation only.  Lyon has a 9-game schedule, with an open date on Oct 17th.  Trinity's bye week is the same.  Should the worst come to pass for BSC this fall, Lyon might be a fallback option to get to 10 games.

ESPN + is Fun for D3 to D1 transfers.  Saw Mj Metz go 3-4 with an HR for Duke.  Brian Schaub go 2-3 while tearing up a HP 3b.  Sam Conti was the first pitcher off the bench for CLT.  Ethan Sund doing his best against TxST.

I'm curious what people think would happen in a hypothetical year where the Pool C teams with the best analytic resumes come from the NWC, SCIAC, and teams over 500 miles apart in R3?

Those teams would be selected in Pool C if they had the best profiles per the selection criteria.

How would the NCAA find the money to support the unbudgeted travel?  Take from other years or other sports?  Or would they bend the first-round conference match-up or 500-mile flight guidance?

The current SAA footprint actually appears to make it impossible to have a 10-team flight scenario (otherwise known as the NCAA D3 Black Swan)

For the 19 zillionth time: the budget does not impact selections.  Pairings, yes.  Selections, no.

The hypothetical is more related to how the NCAA would handle an unforeseeable budgetary overage related to circumstance and policy.  Honest question, but I struck a nerve.  I'll return to my posting dormancy.

This is kind of a black box that none of us really has the experience to answer, but there is a reserve fund that can be drawn on.

Thanks, Pat, appreciate the response.

I hadn't really thought to look, but the NCAA fiscal year is Sept 1 - Aug 30th.  I would assume that means that fall sports are under more pressure to meet their budgets, or else they risk impacting the winter and spring sports championships.   Football would be the largest consumer of that budget per sport by 3 or 4 orders of magnitude.  I would assume what's left or required in spring either gets placed or pulled from the rainy-day fund that you mentioned.

It would be interesting to see if fewer flights for a given year's football championship correlates to more generous travel pairings for spring sports.
