Weird fact of the day: The last triple-overtime game played in the crackerbox came in 1982-83, my senior year at North Park, when the Vikings outlasted North Central, 109-105. My classmate Tim Gustafson played for the Vikings in that game; he was the backup center for NPC behind our other classmate, the great Jim Schultz. Schultzie and Freddie Kruse were the stars of that Vikings team; NCC was led by power forward Mike McFadden and by point guard John Giannini, the latter of whom went on to coach Rowan to the D3 national title in '96 and is now the head coach at LaSalle.

Tim Gustafson, who is a co-worker of Mary Holmes (Kevin's wife and Mark's mom), was at the game today. I talked to Gus afterwards, and he swears that this was the first time he had set foot in our alma mater's gym since 1985. What are the odds that a North Park basketball alumnus who played in the last three-OT game in the crackerbox three decades ago should choose today of all days to make his first appearance in the gym in 28 years? Eerie.

Looks like Wheaton won over Millikin, 62-52.

Nathan Haynes with a solid game, 18 pts, 15 rebs.
Millikin led by Deavis Johnson, 13pts, 10 rebs.

Would love to hear a full rundown as Peters finished with 0 assists.  Strange.  In fact, Wheaton finished with 9 team assists, and Millikin just 6.

I did not get to stream the entire game, but a good amount of Wheaton's offense came from quickly attacking Millikin's full court pressure. I think this strategy would contribute to the 0 assists. Millikin had trouble keeping Haynes from making plays. Other than Haynes, this game was pretty ugly for Millikin. Millikin shot 32% FG and 11% from 3 and lost by only 10. Heck of an improvement over a year ago. Keeps me an optimistic Big Blue fan. Congrats to IWU on the conference title.

John Giannini is also now a member of North Central's board of trustees.

The basketball program is well represented on NCC's board of trustees. Giannini's fellow trustee Steve Hoeft was a first-team All-CCIW selection for the Cardinals in 1971-72.

And Dick Wehrli -- half of the duo for whom Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium is named after -- is a life trustee.

Carthage can't stop Illinois Wesleyan

BY ANDREW HORSCHAK
ahorschak@kenoshanews.com

KENOSHA — If the Illinois Wesleyan men's basketball team wins an NCAA Division III championship next month, no one among the crowd of 1,850 Saturday night at Tarble Arena will be the least bit surprised.

Playing with machine-like precision, the No. 9 Titans continued their march toward College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin perfection as they put on a clinic in carving up Carthage, 78-59, to clinch the regular-season title outright. With victories over Millikin and North Central in its final two games, Wesleyan (20-3, 12-0) would become the CCIW's first undefeated champion since Augustana went 16-0 in 1973.

"They just play right," Carthage senior forward Tyler Pierce said. "That's how basketball is supposed to be played. They play team basketball and they play defense. We just couldn't match their toughness. They were physically stronger than us."

Outrebounded

Carthage (11-12, 6-6) was outrebounded by an eye-popping 42-16 margin, including 16-4 on the offensive glass.

Making the most of its considerable size advantage, 18 of Wesleyan's 28 field goals came on shots from within five feet of the basket. The Titans also scored just enough from the perimeter, finishing 7-of-23 from 3-point range.

Kevin Reed, a 6-foot-6 senior, made all 10 of his field-goal attempts — all from point-blank range (including two dunks) — and scored a game-high 22 points to go along with eight rebounds. Pat Sodemann (13), Michael Mayberger (12), Andrew Ziemnik (10) and Dylan Overstreet (10) also scored in double figures. Ziemnik, the reigning CCIW Player of the Week, grabbed 11 rebounds and Overstreet had eight assists.

"You talk about what college basketball is about from an efficiency point of view, my goodness, are they good," Carthage coach Bosko Djurickovic said.

"If you take Kevin Reed and Andrew Ziemnik, you could have a how-to tape of how to play college basketball. From the physical play to being in the right spot at the right time to never stopping to work on any given possession, give them all the credit in the world. We competed. We battled. We were just outmanned tonight and in the end it showed."

Pierce scores 19 points

Pierce was 8-of-10 from the floor and scored a team-high 19 points. He became the 27th member of Carthage's 1,000-point club with a free throw in the final two minutes. Fellow senior Mitch Thompson added 13 points and Marlon Senior had 11 points and five rebounds.

Despite being outrebounded 23-7 in the first half, Carthage somehow trailed only 37-33 at halftime.

With Sodemann scoring eight points, the Titans pushed their lead to 51-38 in the opening 4 1/2 minutes of the second half.

The Red Men made one last gasp, cutting it to 51-44 on a steal and dunk by Senior with 12:38 to play. On its ensuing possession, Wesleyan grabbed three offensive rebounds before Mayberger connected on one of his four triples of the night from the corner. The Titans continued to pull away after that, leading by as many as 25 points.

From the Wheaton website:

"
Decatur, Ill. - The Wheaton Thunder men's basketball team earned a 62-52 victory at Millikin University (8-15/4-8 CCIW) on Saturday afternoon. Wheaton is now 18-5 on the year, with an 8-4 record in conference play. The Thunder will resume conference play next Saturday with the final home game of the regular season when Carthage College visits King Arena for a 7 PM tipoff.

Nathan Haynes led Wheaton with 18 points and 15 rebounds to record his league-leading 10th "double-double" of the year. Haynes shot 8-for-12 from the field, with five offensive rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.

Tyler Peters scored 15 points, with seven rebounds to aid the Thunder cause. Brayden Teuscher (PICTURED RIGHT) scored 10 points and Michael Kvam scored eight points.

The Thunder posted a 50% (24-48) field goal percentage, with 30% (3-10) from three-point range and 68.8% (11-16) at the free throw line.  Millikin shot 32.3% (20-62) from the floor, with 11.1% (2-18) from three-point range and 76.9% (10-13) at the charity stripe. Wheaton out-rebounded the Big Blue 34-31 in the game, however, Millikin held a 16-10 edge on the offensive glass.

Deavis Johnson led Millikin with 13 points and 10 rebounds. TJ Griffin scored 10 points, while Rodney Clark and Trent Windemuller each scored eight points.

Wheaton never trailed in today's victory against the Big Blue as the Thunder jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first six minutes of the contest. Wheaton's largest lead of the first half was a 12-point bulge at 30-18 with 4:35 left before halftime. Millikin put together a 10-2 run over the final 4:20 of the first half to cut Wheaton's lead to 32-28 at halftime.

Wheaton out-scored the Big Blue 10-4 over the first four minutes of the second half as the Thunder increased its lead to 42-32 with 16:00 left in regulation. Wheaton's largest lead of the game was a 13-point advantage at 50-37 with 11:00 remaining in regulation of a game that the Big Blue could get no closer than a six-point deficit in, as Wheaton secured the key conference road win.  "

Rodney Clark
The Millikin men's basketball team lost to #22 Wheaton College 62-52 at the Griswold Center on Feb. 9.
Millikin battled the Thunder for the entire game with Wheaton holding a 32-28 advantage at the half.  The Big Blue stayed with the Thunder for much of the second half pulling to within six at 52-46 with just over five minutes left to play.  Wheaton shot 50 percent from the field while Millikin hit on 32 percent.  Wheaton had a slight rebounding edge 34-31.
Millikin got 13 points and 10 rebounds from Deavis Johnson, his fifth double double of the season.  TJ Griffin had 10 points.   Senior Rodney Clark playing his final home game for Millikin had eight points, three rebounds and three steals.
Nathan Haynes led the Thunder with 18 points and 15 rebounds.  Tyler Peters added 15.
The game marked the second time this week that Millikin's freshmen dominated squad played tough against a team ranked in the Top 25.  The Big Blue lost to #11 North Central on Wednesday 59-58 when Millikin's game winning shot game just a fraction of a second after the final buzzer.
Wheaton improves to 18-5, 8-4 while Millikin goes to 8-15, 4-8.   The Big Blue travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Feb. 16 for a 7 p.m. game."

Random factoid: with tonight's win, Ron Rose earned his 59th career CCIW regular season victory, and moved into the top twenty among the conference's leaders in all-time coaching victories.

Another 30 twelve-win seasons and he can almost catch Dennie Bridges and his 421 career conference victories.  To put that total into context, Bosko is in his 27th year as a head coach in the conference, is second on the list, and only this year closed to within 200 victories of the top spot.

Congratulations to Ron Rose on his first CCIW championship.

Since the members of his first recruiting class were juniors (Johnson, Sexauer, Rosenkranz), Rose has been knocking on the door of a CCIW title...always just came up a little short.  During the last three years Ron's NCAA tournament record is an outstanding 8-3, including some big-time wins (at #1 Wash U in '09-10, at #1 Hope last year, at Wooster last year).  He's led IWU to the Elite 8 in two of the last three years, and the Final Four last season.  His 2012-13 Titans are now 11-0 with 3 to play.

Really great to see Ron break through and win a CCIW title.  I'm proud of him and his impressive team.

This is IWU's 28th CCIW title in men's basketball.

Part II of this.  Congratulations to Ron Rose on the, now, outright CCIW title.

To me, the key area Ron has grown in as the head coach at his alma mater is in identifying players who fit the way he wants his teams to play.  I vividly remember a telephone conversation I had with him 5 winters ago, when I was in the process of moving from Bloomington to Columbia, Mo.  He was telling me how he wanted to find a very specific type of player to build his program around.  The words he used were "high motor", "competitive", and "leader."  That year he landed Eliud Gonzalez, Stephen Rudnicki, John Koschnitzky, and Jordan Zimmer.  He landed Kevin Reed the next year, and then the Andrew Ziemnik, Victor Davis, Brady Zimmer group the next (current JR class).  In the sophomore class, he now has Dylan Overstreet and Pat Sodemann.  These are all guys who, in their own unique way, fit those three descriptors.  Ron has really done a great job finding players who fit his coaching philosophy and system.

To me, Rose does 3 things really well:

1) Recruits - I think IWU is getting off the bus for CCIW games with the best players this year.

2) Establishes true "team" philosophy - IWU's team approach and unselfishness has been commented on by many this year.  That doesn't happen by accident.

3) Provides freedom for his players to go out and play - IWU's players seem to very clearly know their roles, and within that framework there exists a lot of individual freedom, and also accountability.

It's been nice to watch this come together.

Conference tournament picture...

Illinois Wesleyan 12-0 (vs Millikin, @ North Central)
North Central 9-3 (vs North Park, vs IWU)
Wheaton 8-4 (vs Carthage, @ Elmhurst)
Augustana 6-6 (@ Elmhurst, vs Millikin)
Carthage 6-6 (@ Wheaton, @ North Park)

IWU is locked into the 1-seed...and seems like a real safe bet that NCC and Wheaton will be the 2/3 game.  While Augie and Carthage are tied at 6-6, the Vikings own the tie-breaker over the Red Men (via the sweep)...so the lead is essentially two games.

Basically, the conference tournament field is set:

- IWU vs Augustana
- North Central vs Wheaton
