A little behind, but three consecutive BeltTM defenses for the Quakers.

Wednesday
Guilford 65
Roanoke 53

Roanoke had had The BeltTM last year and won a home defense, but this was just their 3rd BeltTM game at the Cregger Center (they also had one back at the very beginning of the Modern Era).

Friday
Guilford 65
Mary Washington 62

UMW's had a handful of games in the past, including last year. This was the 9th game at the Anderson Center for The BeltTM.

Sunday
Guilford 60
Greensboro 45

I had a fun time with this one. Greensboro has never been in possession of The BeltTM before, but they don't even get to have a marker put on the map for their campus. While this is listed as a road game on Guilford's schedule, the game was played at the Greensboro Coliseum instead of Hanes Gymnasium.

Guilford has the next week or so off before one more ODAC contest against Shenandoah, also on the road.

This one hurt a bit. The Titans led by 15 at the break and by 11 still after the third, but the Cardinals fought back to tie the game with 70 seconds to play. Unfortunately NCC ran out of gas in the extra session and only managed a single point in the extra stanza.

Mallory Powers: 20 pts, 10 reb, 6 stl
Caite Knutson: 13 pts, 6 reb
Kate Palmer: 11 pts, 8 reb, 4 ast
Sawyer White: 6 pts, 5 reb, 7 stl

Megan McClure: 19 pts, 7 reb
Jocelyn Trotter: 14 pts, 11 reb
Megan Duffy: 10 pts
Elle Sutter: 7 pts, 13 reb

NCC 43

Well, this was a game for a while. The Titans led most of the night, but it was fairly close for pretty much the whole first half and about the first five and a half minutes of the second when NCC cut it to four, and even then it was only a six point game just a couple minutes later. But the Cardinals managed just two points over the next eight minutes and the Titans slowly pulled away.

Nick Smoldt: 13 pts, 7 reb
Tyler Swierczek: 8 pts
Drew Gaston: 8 pts
Ethan Helwig: 7 reb

Harrison Wilmsen: 11 pts
Marko Anderson: 10 pts, 5 reb
Shane Miller: 8 pts, 4 reb, 4 stl
Luke Yoder: 6 pts, 5 reb, 7 ast

Also, I am officially starting the campaign for Jocelyn Trotter for CCIW Newcomer of the Year.

Through 9 games so far this season: 8.6 PPG (56/38/40 splits), 6.1 RPG, 1.4 SPG

Just in 3 CCIW games: 15.0 PPG (78/100/50), 5.3 RPG, 2 SPG

Talking with Maggie McCloskey-Bax postgame... we don't know what her ceiling is yet, but we're watching a special player blossom before our eyes.

Carthage 95
NCC 75

I didn't get to see any of this other than peeking at live stats periodically during the women's matchup between these teams. I guess Carthage led wire to wire and pulled away in the second half despite NCC shooting a scorching 13-24 from beyond the arc tonight. The Firebirds, for their part, doubled up the Cardinals in the paint 40-20.

AJ Johnson: 24 pts, 4 stl
Julian Campbell: 22 pts, 5 reb
Filip Bulatovic: 16 pts, 10 reb, 8 ast
AJ Williams: 10 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast

Brian Johnson: 20 pts
Ethan Helwig: 20 pts (17 in the 1st half), 5 reb, 4 ast
Drew Gaston: 19 pts, 8 reb

Buried the lede a bit here, but part of the reason this margin was so high was due to multiple technicals on NCC, including Vince Kmiec apparently getting ejected with about 2 minutes left to play. I'd go back to see what happened... but Carthage doesn't have archived video at present for some reason.

The Cardinals are back home on Saturday to take on Illinois Wesleyan.

NCC 53
Carthage 46

North Central never trailed tonight, using an early 8-0 run to take control of the game. While the Firebirds tied it at one point in the third, the Cardinals forged back ahead by the end of the frame and were able to close it out in the fourth.

Jocelyn Trotter: 17 pts, 5 reb
Megan McClure: 9 pts, 9 reb
Josylin Simmons-Doxie: 7 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl
Grace Keiffer: 4 stl

Marianna Morrissey: 15 pts, 12 reb
Lauren Knight: 14 pts, 6 reb
Grace Cord: 9 pts, 7 reb
Addison Ebeling: 10 reb

Elle Sutter made her return to action tonight on a pitch count; she had 2 points and 3 rebounds in 12 minutes.

On a night where no one knew how media timeouts worked (we took one early in the third off a Carthage timeout by rule, then took another on an NCC one in the fourth for some reason, then didn't do the under 5 timeout) and we had an inadvertent whistle in the final minute when Maggie McCloskey-Bax told the official by the bench that she wanted a timeout off a Carthage free throw, which was attempted to be granted even though neither team technically had possession, but they apparently ruled that the Firebirds did and gave them the ball underneath... only for this to be compounded by a jump ball a few seconds later (Carthage had the arrow, which prompted more confusion).

Truly... this was one of the games of all time.

We had a changing of the guard over the weekend!

2023-24 BeltTM Path
3/18/23: Christopher Newport
11/8/23: Hampden-Sydney

Another successful defense, 88-60 over Averett.

Hampden-Sydney's next defense comes Saturday afternoon at Guilford. The Quakers last had possession of The BeltTM during the 2009-10 season; this will be the fourth game for The BeltTM at Guilford.

I was fairly pleased at halftime of the men's game at the hangar to see the Cardinals were only down 35-32 at halftime up in Waukesha... then the second half happened.

Carroll 92
NCC 62

Jocelyn Trotter: 13 pts, 6 reb
Grace Keiffer: 9 pts
Megan Duffy: 9 pts, 4 ast
Lexie Hernandez: 9 pts
Megan McClure: 6 pts, 5 reb, 6 stl

Natalie Gricius: 18 pts
Emilie Wizner: 15 pts
Olivia Rangel: 14 pts, 6 reb, 4 ast
Lauren Soyke: 7 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast

The Pioneers finished the night with shooting splits of 58/70/100; the Cardinals for their part had 38/33/83. 46-22 advantage in the paint for Carroll, and 17-4 on second chances.

The Cardinals will try to rebound at Wheaton on Saturday.

Augie 59

Wasn't a fun first ten minutes as the Cardinals seemed to have trouble with Augie's 3-2 zone I was reminded of the C-C-I-Double-You game from Pat and Greg on Around the Nation a month or two back. Then the Cardinals closed the half on a 21-4 run to go into the break up by six. Naturally, the Vikings fought back in the second half and we were treated to a nail-biting finish... especially the very end, as suddenly I'm not as worried about seeing missed layups in my dreams.

Ethan Helwig: 15 pts, 8 reb
Ken Thomas: 14 pts, 7 reb
Erikas Gurskas: 12 pts, 2 blk
Brian Johnson: 6 pts, 8 reb, 4 ast

Tyler Knuth: 16 pts
Matt Hawkins: 12 pts
Mike Hamilton: 6 pts, 5 reb

North Central travels to Wheaton on Saturday.

Good SID's are hard to find.   Makes you appreciate legends like Dave Wrath,  Steve Marovich,  Dave Hilbert, etc.   People who put a genuine interest and detail into their writings.

Yep. And I would add that we still have another great elder statesman (I can't wait to tell him that I've called him that on CCIW Chat) among the CCIW SID ranks in Brett Marhanka at Wheaton. And, while I'm obviously biased, I would add that Tyler Woolbright has really come into his own as North Park's SID, too. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Clark Teuscher's administrative skills, since as North Central's SID he not only has a very large menu of sports that he has to deal with, he also has to manage more staff than Santa has elves. ;)

I'll echo these praises. It certainly helps that he's got a veritable army (hell, a couple weeks ago pretty much the entire department was booked for the football playoffs and we had to bring in some mercenaries from Illinois Wesleyan... which, other than the fact that I'm pretty sure my vision tinted green for a couple minutes at one point, they were great). He and assistant SID Nick Osterloo are always on top of stuff; I show up at Merner a little before tipoff and there's a nice packet with pronunciation guides, sponsorship/special event reads, and whatever else I need waiting for me. Obviously I need to shout out the rest of the league's Sports Information staff for helping make that possible.

I try to be as prepared as I can for games, but it certainly helps when you've got the support of a team like that.

Overall 1 seeds aren't supposed to lose in round 2. Regardless, the point is I am not that confident in ST J getting selected. If the committee goes with win % it could be UWW, Wheaton, and Union, Coe/Muhl as last team in.

This is how it played out which is what I was hearing.

So if SJU 2023 was fool's gold, what non-precious metal is 2023 MUC?

under Geoff Dartt, the Raiders have resembled the 2020 precious commodity, Charmin

I can't tell if this is a troll job or just a plain old bad take.

Look, I'm not dancing on Mount Union's grave (...okay, that's not entirely true), but look at the three full years under Geoff Dart. No regular season losses, three conference titles (and thus playoff appearances), two semifinal appearances, and one trip to the Stagg Bowl. If you offered this three season stretch to any of the other 240 D-III teams, you know how many of them would take you up on it? I can probably count on one hand the number of teams that would say no thanks.

The sluggish start continues. North Central broke a 57-all tie on a Brian Johnson three with just over two minutes remaining, then missed their final five shots and also committed a turnover that led to a fast break bucket for the Eagles' Brandon McCoy that gave BenU the lead for good with 1:19 to play.

Ethan Helwig: 19 pts, 9 reb
Ken Thomas: 10 pts, 13 reb
Brian Johnson: 9 pts, 9 reb

Cullen Cosme: 15 pts, 9 reb
Drew Stokes: 14 pts, 5 reb
Nick Howard: 12 pts

The Cardinals only hit 3 of 18 threes in this game, which made me go look at the season stats so far; they're at exactly 32 percent through the first five games, which is better than I thought (though it's buoyed by the win at La Verne and the heartbreaker against Anderson this past weekend). The stat that's a little alarming through five games to me:

NCC: 53 assists, 56 turnovers
Opponents: 63 assists, 44 turnovers

NCC 63
Benedictine 51

Down 3 at halftime, the Cardinals ended up doubling up the Eagles' output in the final 20 minutes and pulled away for a nice win. They ended up doing it without head coach Maggie McCloskey-Bax tonight (apparently tested positive for strep today and had to watch from home).

Biz Daly: 18 pts, 8 reb
Megan McClure: 11 pts, 5 reb
Grace Kieffer: 7 pts, 6 reb

Jordan Carlquist: 13 pts
Ryan Ogarek: 10 pts, 9 reb
Sophia Hardy: 9 pts, 5 reb

Hampden-Sydney had a pair of successful defenses in Ohio.

72-63 over Widener Friday
80-66 over Rose-Hulman Saturday

The BeltTM will spend the holiday with the Tigers; their next defense comes in a week and a half at home against Averett.
