That sounds ridiculous. Why say, "rising"? Was someone offended by the word, "incoming"? I mean, some say you can't say, "freshman" anymore, rather using "first year." Anyway, my apologies for not knowing what "rising" meant.

IMHO, incoming works for someone new to the school, since it carries a connotation of arrival or entry.  For someone who is already at said school, rising works well when the student is "between grades"

Agreed ... although, in Mark's defense, "rising" as applied to an 18-year-old about to enter college for the first time could be argued to be an accurate description of the traditional progression from high-school senior to college freshman. In other words, it's an academic continuity thing -- although I'd still be more inclined to refer to the class of 2027 as "incoming freshmen" for the reason you stated.

Except that the 'progression' is actually from 'cock-of-the-walk' senior to 'scum-of-the-earth' freshman! ;D

Mrs. Y for many years was the volunteer pianist for the neighborhood grade school's music teacher.  She often commented that those 'strutting' 8th graders didn't understand that they were about to become 'beneath contempt' freshmen! :o

Yeah, I predicted it, but it still came about a decade earlier than I thought it would.

RIP, Suomi College! :'(

I see the 'hawks have nice recruit out of Crystal Lake, IL. Familiar with him, Emma?

Tyler Vasey, QB, broke the IL single-season state rushing record with 3878 yards last year. That was also good enough to lead the country in rushing!

I wonder if being only 5'10" prevented him from getting D1 looks. Will JR convert him to RB, possibly?.

Regardless, looks like he's quite the talent.

Glad he's coming to the Dub as he is a gamer. Not sure what he'll play though. The Prairie Ridge (in Crystal Lake) offense is all double wing stuff w very limited passing. He probably threw 25 passes all season, including their playoff run where they lost in championship. I imagine kick returner initially and maybe move him to slot receiver or even DB.

Now, watch him turn into the greatest passer in UWW history! ;D

He's acually the second coming of Bret Favre, held down by his HS coach! ::) ;)

OT:  Seeing my parents' decline physically and observing others of the older generation, I all too frequently these days tell people that "stairs are the enemy of the elderly."  'Twas extremely difficult for Dad to accept that moving out of the house in Mpls was in his best interest.

Shine on, Mr. Ypsi!

I haven't felt the need to move, but did have a chairlift installed a few months ago - going up was not a problem, but going down had gotten rather scary!

Mine goes faster down then up.  You will get use to it.

I was talking about walking up and down (going up you can better see where you're going and even if you stumble you will probably stumble up - going down was getting much trickier).  With my chair lift I don't detect any difference between going up or going down - either way it is 'kinda' fun, but I don't think would be much of a hit at Cedar Point! ;D

If you live long enough . . . you get old :)

My philosophy is "getting old is a bitch - but it beats the alternative." ;D

Thanks for the kind words, y'all!

My health is in serious decline the last couple of years, and, yes, I simply haven't followed CCIW sports like I used to, so I haven't really had anything to contribute.  I still regularly lurk.

For sure, Finlandia is a tough situation. However, I think the program will eventually be decent and stable.

I think Calvin's football program will be very competitive well before the time frame that has been mentioned i.e. much earlier than some have opined here. Regarding the enrollment objective, given that football is, indeed, a different "animal" compared to the other sports, Adrian was extremely successful in that pursuit several years ago when they decided to add men/women hockey (both NCAA and the ACHA teams), men/women lacrosse, and skating. All successful, with the hockey teams winning national championships, but having been very competitive in a short time. Many people criticized that move by their President, but it was the right move for that College. Their enrollment had fallen below 1,000 for the first time in many years; it is currently 1700-1800+ and could be much larger. However, it is my understanding they want to remain at the current number(s). Of course, it didn't hurt that a couple of alumni gave $2 million for the on-campus ice arena as I recall. Having that paid for was obviously a big factor.

We've had conversations about this many times in past years regarding the effect of the football scholarship schools (DII and NAIA) having an tough impact on the MIAA schools, which has, indeed, occurred. I do not see that changing. Yet, despite that, again, while I could be wrong, I believe that Calvin is going to do well much sooner than many of us may think. I also think it will help with their enrollment. It will be interesting to follow the program and see how all of this progresses. The new coach certainly is extremely enthusiastic and appears to fit well with and believes in the MIAA and Calvin philosophy. I am very much looking forward to the first Calvin/Hope football game.

Alas, I disagree about Finlandia.  I fear that not only will the football program never be stable or successful, I fear that the college itself will go under within the next couple of decades.

I agree with the rest of your post.

Don't know if this will constitute a conclusion to the not-yet-posted poll, but for the record I have probably referred to/recounted the last ISU/IWU game no more than a dozen times (it WAS a helluva game, with a buzzer-beating shot by Tommy Gramkow), but, not having been a participant in the chicken prank (unlike my classmate and fellow poster ;)), I've recounted the chicken story AT MOST twice.

For the sake of current residents of BloNo, I hope the rivalry will resume.  I can understand why it ended at that time - ISU certainly had nothing to gain and much to lose as a newbie to D1 by playing a strong D3 team - AND the students DID sometimes get a bit out of hand (NOT a reference to the chicken prank - that was responded to in kind as a harmless, funny prank).

While I've referred to the final ISU-IWU game several times, I have probably referred to the IWU-Kentucky State game (NAIA tourney where we gave the eventual national champion, with TWO future NBA players. a closer game than anyone else did) and the IWU-Hope game (Hope being ranked #1 in the d3hoops.com poll) in round one of the national tourney AT the DeVos in double OT (probably the most exciting game I have ever seen in person).  So I've probably offended non-Titans more with those than with ISU-IWU! :o ;D

Wow, Jayla Johnson and Lauren Lee each returning for a fifth season is a tremendous boost for North Park. Assuming they have retained some athleticism at their advanced ages, nearing or at 23 already!

Yes, I hear that the two of them have been spotted anxiously checking their mailboxes in the NPU Postal Center each day to see if their AARP cards have arrived.

My younger son was invited to apply to AARP when he was 17!  I have no clue where they get their mailing lists, but clearly they will take anyone of any age (I've even heard of people whose DOGS received invites).

AUPepBand, In how many states have you been?

I lack only N Dak, S Dak, Idaho and Alaska.
I just went to Iowa on July 24.  That was my last one.

I've never been to Alaska or Hawaii - have been to all the other 48.

Michael Zweifel named co-defensive coordinator and d-backs coach at UWL.

I always found it interesting when players, who go onto coaching, sometimes over see positions they didn't play. Now if he was the WR coach, then that would make perfect sense.

I suspect it is that they can better identify with the struggles of those in other positions.

In baseball, all-star players rarely make good managers.  It is the marginal players who star as managers.  All-star players just can't seem to identify with players who can't do what they found so easy to do.

Mount was up 49-7 at half.  Left Kevin Burke in for one drive in the third that led to a touchdown.  That is standard procedure.  Put Taurice Scott in and he went 5-8 for 0 touchdowns, but ran for a couple long ones.  Bradley Mitchell got the last one at 2:54 after a short drive.  Didn't look like running up the score, as mostly running the second half.  Just not the slide down at the two and kick a field goal finale that we got used to.

And, to be honest, is it less embarrassing when a team scores on you or tries not to score on you?
[/b]

I'd rather lose 200-0 than have the other team blatantly not score.  That is contempt, not empathy (or even sympathy).  It's saying "I've already got my worst players in and you still can't stop them, so I guess I'll have to stop them."  It is PITY (which is just the 'happy-face' of contempt IMO).

I don't know the solution - perhaps some third stringers who are drama majors (dance majors, gymnasts?) who could CONVINCINGLY trip over their own feet inside the 5 and fumble the ball thru the endzone for a touchback! ;D  (Probably couldn't happen more than twice a game.)

I love how the Regionals have been seeded. There are so many opportunities for schools to proceed to Cedar Rapids with their nemeses in opposite brackets.

I like how they disbursed the conference and region foes across the brackets. Trinity and Chapman/CalLu/PP/Pacific could meet in the finals. So could Cortland and Oswego; BSC and LaGrange; or Rowan and Montclair... it just goes on.
Unless I'm misunderstanding you, that isn't the case for Whitewater and Stevens Point... I was hoping one of them would get matched up with the Webster Regional for a trip to Cedar Rapids, but instead they'd have to face each other.

AND both CCIW reps are in those two regionals as well.  I think both the WIAC AND the CCIW got screwed.

MIT sets the standard by which Caltech should succeed and cannot do so.  Dr. Eslinger is a good coach, but dang, hyperbole alert.

My memory is vague on this, but I recall a number of years ago (perhaps before Eslinger) that a recruit Caltech REALLY wanted was denied admission - he went to his 'safety school' (MIT!) and became an all-american.  (Only at Caltech could MIT be considered a 'safety school'! ;D

I think that Greg is UNDERSTATING the difficulty of being a Caltech coach.  MIT may be athletically what Caltech aspires to, but academically Caltech is what MIT aspires to.
