Adios, Texas Ole!

https://www.newsweek.com/texas-secede-us-2023-gop-pushes-referendum-1717254

Would UMHB and the “American” Southwest Conference continue to compete in NCAA athletics?  Originally this was a satirical question but as I wrote it decided it was a serious question. Maybe they could play in the Successionist Southwest Conference?

Ugh!  Not another one of these.  I lean to the right, and this is just ridiculous.  I have Texas pride, but I will always be an American first!  I am far more proud of my ancestral heritage.  Texas secedes, and I will have to figure out what to do.  There is a secessionist party in Texas that seems to nominate a few people to state offices every year.  Basically this is just a memo sent to members of the party to vote on (think primary) that if it passes means it might go before the state legislature.  Then you have the bill to become a law.  In all likelihood it isn't happening.  I feel like this is whining about a lost election.  I also wonder if it makes financial sense to start a new country!

I do believe there is trademark on the Southwest Conference name that basically prevents anyone from ever using it again.

I’m a little bit confused … wasn’t this all settled 157 years ago?

You would have thought give or take a few years. Rejoined in 1870. California is another state that likes to threaten to secede.

Here's a fun challenge:

Step #1: Go to your college or university's "majors & minors" webpage where all majors and minors are listed

Step #2: Conduct a word search for "Studies"

Step #3: Find a major from the search results that is not a complete bulls**t program.

That was an interesting challenge.  Almost entirely what I would categorize as a waste of time and money, save for 2 of them - Social Studies (for education majors) and Biblical and Theological Studies, which is relevant for those going into ministry or planning for seminary.

Peace Studies was my winner for biggest waste of time, just beating out Gender Studies.  Leadership Studies won the "vague" category for  me.

Point taken on social studies. Although, I think that social studies is kind of a mutant child of several disciplines--history probably being the most notable, combined with political science, and a little economics (generally really, really bad economics).

Biblical and Theological Studies could just simply be titled "Theology" as every theology program that I'm aware of incorporates a study of the bible to a substantial degree.

Peace Studies should be nothing more than a concentration of a Philosophy major.

Don't even get me started on Gender & Sexuality Studies degrees--I see no merit or utility there at all.

I guess it fits the stereotype that most Johnnies avoided women's studies.

Jokes aside some of these majors can be beneficial if you have a specific plan.  Some are good for teaching and certain types of grad school.  The key to any major is having a plan on how to use it which most people ignore.  I wish I hadn't majored in English.  Eventually I got an accounting degree which is serving me well.  Schools do cut programs that don't mesh with the identity of the school.  St. Olaf dropped communication and some of its education programs.  I know nursing was at one point on the chopping block.  I know we have talked about it some on this board, but I think the MIAC is due to see at least 1 school fail or have to fully merge with another one.

Also don't worry Johnnies we are planning to vote you out soon so you can join UST at the D1 level.  I am joking of course, but with the direction of the NCAA and athletics I could see a ton of movement between divisions in the coming years.  I see a few D1 coaches regularly, and they keep telling me the portal and NIL has created a mess for schools.

Only in Texas.

According to CNN, so many players were suspended for 2 games (for actions after the assault) that the next two games will have to be forfeited by the team whose player was mugged due to lack of available players.  The assailant has been kicked off the team and is likely to be kicked out of school.

Alas, this sort of thing is NOT only in Texas. ::)

Wowzer.
I'd be curious what precipitated this. Is the pitcher just THAT much of a hothead? I have to imagine there's more to the story. Obviously, there's no taunting or other provocation that would justify what the pitcher did, but I think there's more to the story.

I'm just curious--that's all.

This was my first thought as well when I saw it yesterday. It doesn't look like the hitter does anything. Home run trot is pretty normal. I assume there had to be some history between those players, or the pitcher is just a nut job.

you can see the base umpire gesturing towards the hitter when he is between 2nd and 3rd base. It seems like the umpire may have been in the process of ejecting the batter for something he said to the pitcher when the pitcher snaps and attacks the guy.

A reporter in Houston got ahold of the Umpire's game report and posted it to Twitter. It reads:

In the 2nd inning, #25 Phillips for North Central and the starting pitcher for Weatherford College, Siravo #31, exchanged words after Phillips struck out.
Home Plate Umpire, Keith Prichard didn’t hear what was said because of the crowd and strong winds but walked over to the NCTC dugout and told them to knock it off and then walked over to the pitcher Siravo and told him to knock it off.
Top of the 6th inning:   2 outs     Runner on 1st'      3 -1 count    North Central at bat
#25 Phillips for North Central hits a 2 run home run.  As he was rounding the bases between 2nd and 3rd Phillips yells out to Weatherford's pitcher, "F--k You".
Sam Kayea, Base Umpire, pointed at Phillips and said, "If you want to stay in this game, shut your mouth."  Phillips did not say another word after that.  As Phillips rounded third, Woodwards (sic) #20, the pitcher for Weatherford violently tackled Phillips.

The North Central players cleared their bench, and the North Central bullpen came running to the field.  There were two North Central players that had nothing to do with the fight; the lead runner Acinger #20 and the on deck batter Huspen #4.
Five Weatherford players left their positions.  The catcher from Weatherford, #10 Stark, left his position to help pull players off that were fighting Woodward but did not throw any punches.
Additional Weatherford players, 3rd baseman Merka #4, shortstop Penoley #12, and 1st baseman Villeneuve #28 ran  over but did not actively participate in the fight.
The other players stayed in their dugout.  Weatherford Head Coach and Pitching Coach along with North Central coaches assisting in breaking up the fight.
Prichard and Kayea discussed what had occurred and then conferenced with the coaches to notify them would happen.
Kayea asked Jeff Lightfoot, Head Coach for Weatherford if they were filming the game.  He said they were streaming the game.  Kayea asked the coaches to view the video to gather all the necessary information to give to the conference and the assignor, John Brammer.

I've heard from a few people that know those involved in the game.  Apparently there were some MLB scouts in the stands looking at the pitcher.  I believe he has signed with UH for next year.  Before and during the game there was a lot of trash talking, and as we can see it escalated.  Just so much stupidity with it.

Also in Texas there are 2 sports seasons: football and spring football.  Maybe he just forgot that he was playing baseball and not preparing for spring drills.

Good job Auggie!  I watched the Ole game last week.  That was a different St. Olaf team than I saw earlier in the season.  Hopefully the respect for the MIAC continues to grow.  Didn't realize the WIAC no longer had an AQ spot for hockey.

6
I just enjoy watching Hitler rant videos.  Usually he is an Aggie.

7
The Oles outplayed the Auggies tonight. Congrats to St Olaf!

Dang! If you would've told me the final was going to be 5-2, I would have believed you but assumed Auggie won.

I haven't followed things super close, but I'm assuming since Augsburg is #4 in the pairwise, they'll get an at-large bid.
You are correct, Augsburg will play the winner of St. Norbert-St. Olaf in the quarterfinals at Augsburg. I can't recall a year that 2 MIAC hockey teams made the NCAA playoffs so that is good overall for the status of the MIAC and it should give St Olaf a good boost to build their program.

It's a big win for St. Olaf!  That program has seen more dysfunction than any other program in recent years.  In the late 90s there were concerns about having junior players join the team rather than local kids from the HS ranks.  Now the team is starting to see more international and east coast players.  It is something different in the MIAC.  St. Olaf seemed to step up their game when they played Augsburg.  The game was always closer than I think most would have predicted.  Beating SJU was probably the bigger shock.  Also St. Olaf is now the lowest seed to ever win the MIAC tournament.  That is mostly due to the fact I think it used to be only the top 5 teams.  It is great seeing the MIAC get 2 teams in the tournament.  The MIAC and western teams in general have not gotten the respect they deserve from the NCAA come tournament time.

As for the All-Sports Competition standings the men's was always closer than the women's standings.  The more sports a school participates in the more points it accumulates.

UST could always look to the fairgrounds to upgrade those facilities or use existing facilities shared by other groups.  I think UST is looking for a way to avoid sharing facilities.

I sure like USTranslators spin on the T&C offer.

Sounds like we don't want to sell, but the money may be too good.

Bethel has hired a coach - they went pretty young!  I don't know anything about him beyond what I just read in the release.

https://athletics.bethel.edu/news/2021/9/7/mens-basketball-zach-filzen-introduced-as-bethels-next-head-mens-basketball-coach.aspx

Didn’t see this news, but it is a great hire for Bethel. He is a good coach with a strong pedigree. This is a homecoming for him. I just wish it was at St. Olaf. I think Bethel will be very happy with him. The Filzen family is among the nicest I’ve ever met. It is impossible to feel like a stranger around them!

It’s been forever since I’ve been to the museum, but I'm remembering it correctly it is very similar. I will keep my opinions of it quiet.  I recognized the display immediately and made a comment about pushing off. The team rep with us asked if I was a Vikings fan, and I just informed that I went to school where the Cowboys held their first training camp. Sadly I couldn’t find any pictures of that training camp.

To all my fellow recovering Vikings fans, happy 46th anniversary of the Drew Pearson push off in the 1975 NFC Divisional Playoff. Stay strong--you can overcome this debilitating addiction also.

There is a frame by frame panel installation on one of the stairwells of the Cowboys headquarters. The guide pointed out the oranges on the field. It’s a neat display. I’ve been through the facility a few times. It is over the top extravagant.

That was a hard fought game and a bummer to lose.  Gotta love the way the Johnnies battled back.  Sometimes the ball doesn't bounce your way, and today was one of those days.  Losing sucks, but I'm proud of this Johnnie team.  They battled through a ton of adversity this year.

Congrats, 'Cats.  Do some damage, now!

Ok, now WTF was up with SJU playing a Linfield hype video, playing their rouser before the game, and playing it again along with Wildcat graphics on the video board when they scored?  You can be gracious hosts without going that far. I'm sorry, but that's part of homefield advantage, and that really ticked me off.  I've never been to another game where the home team did that.  >:(

Years ago a school (may have been the band) decided to play the visitors' fight song or alma mater.  That didn't sit well with the visiting team and it caused a fight (nearly a riot).  The school felt that they were the only dignified enough to play those songs.

So, did Lindfield rent those MASSIVE heaters for their sidelines?  I chuckled that the Johnnies didn't even have a heater and Linfield had two monstrous ones.  :D

It was quite a pleasant day for late November in MN!  Heck, we enjoyed great weather all season.

Kind of silly if the weather was anything like it was in Whitewater, BUT...

Let me get this straight.  The NCAA monitors scoreboards to the point that a home scoreboard has to "even things out" with promotions and hype videos they show.  But a visiting team can bring whatever extras they want and plunk them down on the sidelines?

Serious question: What if St. John's had the heaters on the sideline and didn't provide them to the visitors?

Looks like the visitors can’t bring whatever they want but the host needs to provide certain things regardless and a few things if requested. https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/football/d3/2019-20D3MFB_HostOpsManual.pdf —> not the most recent but I imagine there aren’t a ton of updates.

Video board pg 9 section h.
Heater pg 3 section section c.
For good measure, equipment pg 4 section m.

In the mid-2000s I worked in the athletic department of a Division I school that hosted a number of postseason events on our campus; the sports involved didn't have video boards at that time but your reference to page 9, section h sounds like what we were told about similar activities. Our baseball PA announcer was fantastic at playing ... shall we say, "appropriate" ... sound clips that weren't exactly supportive of the visiting team; he was informed that wouldn't fly during NCAA postseason events. And if you're playing a multi-round tournament, you may be the host team but required to be the visitor and use the visitor's bench / dugout for a game.

I did wonder about that huge heating system behind Linfield's bench - I'd be interested in knowing if that was what St. John's provided if Linfield requested heaters.

I've watched a ton of D1 baseball playoff games and that drives me nuts regarding the dugouts!  If you are the host you should have access to all of your home facilities which includes the dugout even when you are the visiting team.  If the umpires need a dugout location to determine home and visitor then they need to get a new gig!

I've seen the heaters along with air coolers on the sidelines at games.  That doesn't bother me.  A few years ago Iowa St. was denied shade tents for a road game at Baywhore.  The argument was they were not approved prior to the game.  Iowa State baked in unbelievably high temps while the home team had special cooling sections.  I've also heard (especially in HS) where certain coaches in Texas would disable the AC in the visiting locker rooms sometimes claiming it was broken.  Home field advantage is one thing, but some of the gamesmanship seems targeted at player safety.

You don't know the attendance, but there are times several stadiums feel very small.  I can remember St. Olaf games at Klas and Edor Nelson that were crowded.  Attendance might be lower, but I would guess the attendance is going to exceed the capacity of those stadiums.

15
This will be the highest attended MIAC football championship game ever!  I would even surmise that is this is the coldest game the MIAC has seen in close to 2 years.

Regardless of what happens I think a lot of those around the MIAC look at this as something fun.  It will be elevated to something more than it deserves.

I do think the conference needs to evaluate whether home stadiums are the best venues.  Royal Stadium is under construction.  Can you imagine playing this game at Edor Nelson or Klas Field?  Those venues are significantly undersized.  If St. Olaf were to host a game of this magnitude I would have concerns about Manitou.  You can make jokes about how those teams have no chance to host, but history tells us that the two current teams in the championship are going to have off years.

Just thought I would throw out the obvious!

As far as I know, this is the first MIAC championship game period - so yes, it will be the highest attended MIAC championship game ever attended (and also the lowest). ;)

And since the MIAC didn't play last year, yes, it will also be the coldest in 2 years.
