No surprise that Hobart is still ranked #1 in the region. The conference tournaments could certainly change the final rankings next week if Hobart should lose and Plattsburgh wins. If both teams win the automatic conference  bids it's entirely possible the East Region won't get an at large bid. Brockport would be a possibility with a win and a loss in the SUNYAC tournament to finish 20-7. I don't think anyone else has a chance.

If either Hobart or Plattsburgh or both get upset in their conference tournaments it's possible the East could get 3 or 4 teams in the NCAA's as either of those teams could get an at large bid, to go along with the automatic bid winners.

Guys, can I get a pronunciation guide for Jonathan Patron?  I'm taping a radio spot with ESPN Burlington tomorrow and I don't want to sound silly.

And then there were four.

Semifinals today at Plattsburgh State. First game tips off at 5:30 PM followed by the next game at 7:30 PM

Oneonta State  vs  Brockport State   5:30

The Golden Eagles were supposed to be here in the Final Four. Oneonta is the party crasher. These Red Dragons took down the favored Red Dragons from Cortland in Cortland...no easy feat...and they did it by leading almost from start to finish. Trailing by a 6-5 score early in the game, Oneonta scored 7 unanswered points and never trailed after that. They led for a good portion of the game by a margin of 7 to 13 points and only in the final 7 minutes did Cortland pull within a single possession and make the outcome of the game in doubt. Oneonta hung tough and completed the upset due to their ability to control the boards against Cortland. They had a decided 44-25 edge off the glass and had 15 offensive rebounds to only 6 for Cortland. Harrison Deegan and Joseph Bull came off the bench to provide a big lift as they combined for 29 points...15 for Deegan and 14 for Bull. Ian Schultz (15) and Sean Nolan (12) both set career highs for the number of rebounds they grabbed.

Oneonta will need to get another helping  of those performances today if they hope to spring upset # 2 on Brockport. The Golden Eagles are coming into this game on a 4 game winning streak, which includes an 89-72 win over these Red Dragons 2 weeks ago. Oneonta did manage to beat Brockport back in December by an 87-83 score, so this is the rubber match to see who will move into the Championshiop game. The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles an 8 point favorite in this game and they will depend heavily on their two all conference performers, Hamed Shamseldin and Justin Summers. If Oneonta can somehow slow this pair down they may keep the game close and be there at the end. However, I think the experience of Brockport will be the deciding factor and look for the Golden Eagles to come away with an 85-76 win.

Oswego State  at  Plattsburgh State  7:30 PM

This will be the 3rd time in the last 4 years that the Cardinals and Lakers have squared off in the SUNYAC tournament. The Lakers won both of the previous meetings. Plattsburgh owns a pair of playoff wins against Oswego in 2007 and 2008 so this one will give the winner a leg up.

Oswego comes into the game with back to back wins over the #4 seed, Geneseo and has won 5 of their last 6 games. They struggled against the top 3 teams in the YAC going 0-6 but were right there in many of those games. They did manage to put 95 points on the board Tuesday against the Knights in Geneseo so they are a dangerous team and with nothing to lose will come at Plattsburgh with everything they have. Coach Leone will have his troops prepared and will try and take as much time off the clock as they can to limit the touches of an athletic Plattsburgh team. All five starters were in double figures on Tuesday night led by Jamir Ferebee's 21 points and 20 points from Ian Schupp. Tyler Pierre added a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Plattsburgh State is on a roll that stretches back to December 9th when they started their 17 game winning streak. Go to guy, Jon Patron, has yet to lose this year after joining the team on December 30th. His all conference teammate, Eli Bryant, is one of the top scorers in the YAC and does so coming off the bench and getting less minutes than many other players in the league Add in Eric Mack, who leads the conference in blocked shots, to provide excellent interior defense and you have a recipe for success. Plattsburgh plays a rotation that goes 9 deep and has multiple guys that can lead the team in scoring.

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 12 point favorite in this one. I think they win by a final score of 80-66.

Plattsburgh 89  Oswego 76

I had the Cardinals winning by an 80-66 final score so my margin of victory was close even though both teams put more points on the board.  Oswego was down by 20 points with 5 minutes to go and the pace of the game sped up a bit as they tried to close the big gap.

The Cardinals opened up with a 6-0 lead, but the Lakers cut it to 6-5 and were only down 13-10 6 minutes into the game. Plattsburgh went on an 11-0 run getting 5 points from Eli Bryant and 4 points from Jon Patron to go up 24-10 and it looked like the rout was on. The Lakers refused to fold however and fought back scoring the next 7 points and eventually closing the gap to 30-26 with 6:11 left in the half. Plattsburgh never trailed but couldn't put the Lakers away despite gaining double digit leads on several occasions in the period. Up by 9 at 40-31 after a Zack Coleman 3 pointer,  the Cardinals  missed their final 3 shots and Oswego's Tim Marshall canned a 3 pointer to narrow the deficit to 40-34 at the break.

Plattsburgh spent the early parts of the 2nd period trying to pull away from the Lakers and led by 5 to 9 points over the first 5 minutes.   Oswego was down 51-43 but once again a 7-2 spurt by the Lakers brought them to within a single possession at 53-50. That was as close as they could get as Plattsburgh finally found the rhythm to put the visitors away. Led by Patron and Brandon Johnson they opened up a lead that reached double digits when Johnson hit a 3 pointer that made the score 69-57 with 7 minutes to play. Another 3 pointer by Eli Bryant was followed by a triple from Nick DeAngelis and the lead reached 18 points with 6 minutes to go and the Cardinals closed out Oswego at the line.

The Lakers were hurt by the absence of their leading scorer Jamir Ferebee who was injured in the quarterfinal game against Geneseo and didn't suit up for the game. I have no doubt the all conference performer would have made a difference in the game but ultimately I still believe the cardinals would have won the game.

Plattsburgh was led by Jon Patron who put up a big number with 35 points and 13 rebounds. Despite numerous double teams the Cardinals go to guy was simply unstoppable whenever they went to him. The obvious choice for SUNYAC Player of the Year was 15 of 21 from the field, 1 of 2 from downtown and 4 x5 from the line.

Eli Bryant as he has done all year came off the bench to score 12 points, and dish out 6 assists

Brandon Johnson had 11 points 3 assists, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and a block also off the Cardinals bench.

Point guard Zach Coleman  had 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists

Eric Mack had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks and 2 steals as he filled up the stat sheet in 24 minutes off the bench.

Nick DeAngelis added 8 points and Chris Middleton chippesd in with 6 points.

Oswego was led by freshman Liam Sanborn with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Josh Ivy had 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Tim Marshall had 13 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.

Tyler Pierre had 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Ian Schupp and Brandan Gartland both added 9 points.

The win marked Plattsburgh's 18th in a row, the 2nd longest current streak in the NCAA for men's basketball, all divisions.

Oswego finishes the season at 14-13 and 10-8 in the conference.

Plattsburgh will face Oneonta , a winner over Brockport,  in the Finals on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM.

SUNYAC Championship Game

#6 seed Oneonta State  at  #1 seed Plattsburgh State

Quite a testament  to the coaching ability of Oneonta's Coach Cameron Conover to have his team in the YAC championship game for the 2nd season in a row. Last year was his first season as a head coach and he wasted little time taking the Red Dragons to a place they hadn't been in a long time. But the guts of that team, three 1000 point scorers, were gone as Mikey McElroy, Frankie Kelly and Lawrence Coleman all graduated. This year had rebuilding written all over it and the championship game of the playoffs seemed like a far fetched idea. Yet once again Oneonta claimed their playoff spot, the final one up for grabs, on the last day of the regular season, with a win over Potsdam on the road,  Then they upset Cortland on the road in the first round of the playoffs and with their victory over Brockport yesterday, they once again find themselves on the verge of a SUNYAC championship. That's the good news.

The bad news is they have to play Plattsburgh State. It the age old...mentor against the student...as the Oneonta coach will face off against Coach Tom Curle who had Conover on his staff as his top assistant and recruiter for many years. Coach Conover knows the Plattsburgh State players quite well, since he recruited many of them and he has no illusions that his job today will be a tough one.

The Plattsburgh State coach has put together another fine season that will rival some of his other great teams during his tenure at Plattsburgh. last year this team was 2-7 after their first 9 conference games. Since then they are 25-3 against conference teams and are one step away from winning the Championship that they couldn't even qualify for, a year ago at this time, because they failed to make the playoffs.

The oddsmakers have listed Plattsburgh as a 15  point favorite in this one and the Cardinals have been able to contain Oneonta in their 2 previous meetings this year. The Red Dragons have been playing their best basketball of the season in the past 10 days however and have nothing to lose and everything to gain if they win today.  Still Plattsburgh has too many weapons and I think that the Cardinals are focused on the task at hand. I see the Cardinals winning this game by an 88-71 final score.

SUNYAC CHAMPIONSHIP

With Hobart losing today to Skidmore in the Liberty League semifinals and Plattsburgh State winning the SUNYAC Conference Tournament it looks like Plattsburgh will be the top ranked team in the East Region in  the next set of Regional Rankings that we won't be able to see. That should also guarantee that Plattsburgh will host a first round pod of 4 teams next weekend in the NCAA tournament. Hobart may also still host but the Cardinals should be a lock.

I would expect Plattsburgh to climb a few spots in the D3hoops Top 25 as well. Their overall record is 22-4 and their winning streak is now at 19 games.

The Pool C discussion on this board doesn't even think Hobart is getting in.  No at-large bids for the East Region...

I'll be surprised if Hobart doesn't get an at large bid. 21-5 is usually too good to be overlooked. And they will be the first team from the East Region at the table. Several sources I use both think that Hobart will get a bid.

Also not sure where you read that Hobart won't get in and no at large bids for the East Region. Here's a quote from a front page story on D3hoops that was posted late Saturday night.

"Freshman Noah Meren continued his coming-out party, leading Skidmore to a 63-60 win over No. 1 seed Hobart in the Liberty League semifinals. Meren scored 16 to go along with 13 rebounds. Edvinas Rupkus also had 16 points for Skidmore (16-10), which has now won five games in a row after a disastrous stretch in which the Thoroughbreds lost eight of 11. Hobart was led by Colin Dougherty, with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Hobart is in strong position for a Pool C bid, but the loss will mean someone else's bubble pops. Skidmore will take on Union tomorrow for the LL AQ."

#8609
SUNYAC Championship    Plattsburgh State 93 Oneonta State 80

I had the Cardinals winning by an 88-71 final score but the Red Dragons kept the score considerably closer for most of the game. It made the contest an exciting one to watch for the over 800 fans that were in attendance.

Oneonta opened the game with scores in 2 of their first 3 possessions while the Cardinals went scoreless in their first two trips. Down 4-0 Jon Patron scored inside and was fouled to get Plattsburgh on the board. It would be the first of many baskets for Patron who was simply unstoppable tonight despite the fact that the defense knew who was going to get the ball and where he was going once he had it. Double teams didn't work. Hands in his face didn't stop him from hitting short jumper after short jumper and if you backed off him just a bit he promptly fired up a three pointer that found the bottom of the net. Yet despite that, the Red Dragons hung with Plattsburgh throughout the entire first half. Numerous ties and lead changes occurred in the first 7 minutes of action until Plattsburgh's Brandon Johnson nailed a three ball to break a 15-15 tie and a minute later Eric Mack hit another trifecta to double their advantage. After Harrison Deegan scored on a layup for Oneonta, Johnson hit another one from downtown to make the score 24-17. It was the first of 6 different occasions that the Cardinals would have a 7 point lead but they could never get past that point as Oneonta kept pace and hit shot after shot to prevent the Cardinals from stretching that advantage to double figures. Near the end of the period the Red Dragons scored on 3 possessions to pull within a point at 37-36. Patron buried one from deep, but Carson Jacobs matched that for Oneonta. Eric Mack scored inside for Plattsburgh and after an Oneonta turnover the Cards just missed an opportunity to go into the break up by 5 points and settled for a 42-39 edge.

Oneonta was playing inspired basketball and despite 16 first half point from the Cardinal's Patron were still only a possession away from tying the game up. The Red Dragons shot 56.3% in the first half hitting 18 of 32 attempts. Plattsburgh was 16x34, good for 47.1% and Patron was 6x7 from the field. Dwayne Freeman with 11 points and Harrison Deegan with 10 points were the main weapons for Oneonta. Together they were 10x15 from the field and constantly got inside on drives to the basket for layups. In fact, Deegan scored early in the 2nd half on a drive to the hoop, right after Kevin Mackin tied the game at 42 just after the start of the final period. Deegan's basket gave Oneonta its first lead since the 15:27 mark of the first period. It then turned into the Jon Patron show as he scored 17 of the next 21 points for Plattsburgh that included 4 layups, 3 free throws and 2 three pointers. And still the Red Dragons wouldn't go away. Oneonta got contributions from Freeman, Ian Schultz, Carson Jacobs, and Sean Nolan, making 6 different players that scored in the first 4 minutes of the half. Then freshman Joseph Bull entered the game and scored the next 8 points for Oneonta. Harrison Deegan then ended the Bull run with a layup for the Red Dragons, and with 13 minutes to play the score was 63-63. The back and forth play continued over the next 4 minutes but with the Cardinals ahead 70-69 Plattsburgh's Ian Howard grabbed an offensive rebound and scored and then scored again a minute later to put the Cards up 74-70. Howard then got a rebound on the other end and Eli Bryant hit one from downtown. After another defensive rebound by Howard, he grabbed a missed Cardinal attempt at the other end and was fouled. He made both free throws and then got another rebound off an Oneonta miss that led to another Jon Patron layup. That put Plattsburgh up by an 81-70 score with 6:39 left and was the definitive move that led to the Cardinal victory. Oneonta couldn't overcome that deficit as the lead hovered between 7 and 13 points the rest of the way. Howard had 4 offensive boards, 7 defensive boards and 8 points in a 7 minute stretch that was instrumental in the Cardinal victory.

Jon Patron put up 35 points on Friday night against Oswego and I thought he had given us his best effort of the year, Saturday he was in another zone as he scored a career high 41 points. He also had 9 rebounds and 2 steals. He was 16x23 from the field, 3x4 from long distance and 6x7 from the line. He left no doubt who the MVP of the SUNYAC tournament was. D3hoops had this to say about Patron's performance:

"Some bubble team should send Jonathan Patron a thank you card for preserving its NCAA Tournament bid. The junior forward dropped 41 points on SUNY Oneonta, and Plattsburgh State defeated the Red Dragons 93-80 for the SUNYAC's automatic bid. Patron shot 16-for-23 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line, in addition to grabbing nine rebounds for the Cardinals. Plattsburgh State was in good shape to make the NCAA Tournament, even without the automatic qualifying bid."

Ian Howard had a double-double of 15 points and a game high 16 rebounds to go with 3 assists and 1 block. He is the hardest working guy on the floor most nights.

Eric Mack once again filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a pair of blocks in just 19 minutes of court time.

Brandon Johnson also came off the bench with 10 points, 4 boards, and 2 assists.

Eli Bryant scored  5 points and had 4 assists.

Plattsburgh outrebounded Oneonta 44 to 27 and that was a key to the game as the Red Dragons had controlled the boards in their first two playoff games against Cortland and Brockport. The Cardinals had 9 turnovers to 11 for Oneonta. Both teams ended up shooting a little over 50% for the game and they both ended up with 8 three pointers.

Oneonta was led by Dwayne Freeman with 19 points and 4 assists. It was his last collegiate game as he is a senior and 1 of only 2 players that the Red Dragons will lose off this years team.

Harrison Deegan had 15 points to complete an excellent playoff run. Only a sophomore Deegan will be back and will only get better over the next two years.

Joseph Bull had 12 points and a team high 8 rebounds off the bench as he covered a lot of minutes for Ian Schultz who suffered an injury in the first half, just 4 minutes into the game. Bull is just a freshman and he has plenty of game. He will be a load to handle in the next 3 years.

Carson Jacobs added 11 points and 7 boards and was 3 x5 from long distance. Jacobs is only a sophomore so he will give the Red Dragons another solid scoring option next year.

2 more sophomores Kevin Mackin and Ian Schultz both had 8 points. Mackin added 3 rebounds and a steal while Schultz had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. Schultz did return from his first half injury and played 18 minutes in the 2nd half.

Sean Nolan another freshman added 5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Red Dragons appear to be loaded for the next few years with a ton of young talent. They will be looking to make the SUNYAC Championship game for the third season in a row.

Oneonta completes their season with a 14-14 overall record, and finished as the #6 seed in the YAC. I think they will be considerably  higher up the ladder next year.

Plattsburgh improves to 22-4 and stretches their winning streak to 19 straight games. With #1  ranked Whitman losing on Saturday to Whitworth the Cardinals now have the longest current winning streak in all of men's basketball, all divisions.

Plattsburgh will now await the NCAA selection show on Monday to see if they will host or be sent somewhere. I'm prettty sure as SUNYAC Champions they will get to host a pod of 4 teams. it wouldn't surprise me to see Middlebury, Johnson and Wales, New England College or Bridgewater State as possibilities. Nazareth and the NEAC winner could also end up here.

The All SUNYAC Tpurnament Team was comprised of:

Player                   School
Hamed Shamseldin   Brockport
Harrison Deegan   Oneonta
Dwayne Freeman   Oneonta
Ian Howard           Plattsburgh
Eric Mack                   Plattsburgh
Jonathan Patron    Plattsburgh  Most Valuable Player

The SUNYAC also recognizes the men's basketball player with the highest grade point average in awarding the Elite 20 award. This year's winner is Oswego's Brandon Gartland.

Congratulations to all the players in the SUNYAC on another outstanding season. I hope next year is even better.
