Feb. 21           The final weekend of the regular season. Four games on tap for tonight

Geneseo State  at  Oswego State        7:30 PM

Oswego with a big win over Oneonta on Tuesday, could clinch the 3rd seed with a win tonight, coupled with a Cortland loss to Brockport. With the Golden Eagles on tap for tomorrow afternoon, the Lakers don't want to be thinking to far ahead and forget to take care of business against the Knights.

Geneseo is still trying to hang on to the 6th and final playoff spot. If they get a win this weekend they can clinch that position and eliminate Plattsburgh. They have two tough games so a win won't come easy, as they face Oswego tonight, with Cortland scheduled for Saturday. They do have more on the line, since those teams are in the playoffs and the Knights may need to win, to get in.

The experts have made the Lakers a 14 point favorite to win this one. I think they win by a few more. Oswego 78 Geneseo 61.

New Paltz State  at  Plattsburgh State   7:30 PM

This is the game that could determine whether Plattsburgh makes the playoffs or finishes in 7th place. The Cardinals are a game behind Geneseo and need a win here to catch them. They still need help but if they tie with 6-12 records, Plattsburgh wins the tiebreaker. The Cardinals played two solid games last weekend against Cortland and Oswego but couldn't get a win. They were shorthanded and will probably be so again today.

New Paltz playing the spoiler role and would like a win here because tomorrow they have Potsdam and that will be the tougher of the weekend games. The point spread favors Plattsburgh by 8 points. It may be closer than that. The Hawks only lost to Cortland last week by 7 points. Plattsburgh 75 New Paltz 69.

Brockport State  at  Cortland State        7:30 PM

Brockport has won 13 in a row and is the number one team in the East Region Rankings. They have done that despite losing Justin Summers, their top player, from January 17th until February 11th, a total of 10 games. On Tuesday, Senior Night, he played and scored 13 points in 11 minutes. I'm still not sure if he'll play tonight since Brockport has a stranglehold on the top seed and the coaching staff may want to save him for the playoffs, to give him that extra week to get stonger. They may also decide to give him some minutes to get back up to speed.

Cortland is on a 3 game win streak including a win over #2 Potsdam last weekend. Leading scorer Austin Grunder did not play on Tuesday against New Paltz. They will need his talents against Brockport. The Red Dragons still hoping for the 4th seed so they can host a playoff game.

Several players involved in this game that missed the first go around, which resulted in an 86-73 Brockport win. Cortland did not have 3 point specialist Ryan Schmadel and Brockport was missing top rebounder Devante Hagins. I expect both to play tonight. The big question marks will be Austin Grunder for Cortland and Justin Summers for Brockport.

Brockport now ranked #25 in the D3Hoops Top 25 Poll. Will need a win if they want to stay ranked. A win will also help them if they get upset in the conference tournament and need an at large bid to go dancing. The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a slim 4 point favorite in this one. I like Brockport as well.
Final score Brockport 87 Cortland 80.

Oneonta State  at  Potsdam State        7:30         Featured Game of the Night

This game will probably determine who gets a bye and who will host a first round game. Oneonta won the first meeting back in December on a late basket by Ian Schultz to come away with a 62-60 win.

The Bears will have a different lineup in this contest as they were missing their top scorer at the time, Jayquan Thomas. They also have a new addition, Isaiah Brown, who joined the team in January, and he has exploded on the SUNYAC scene. He has already been named as the SUNYAC Player of the Week 4 times in the 6 weeks he's been eligible.

The Red Dragons have been without one of their top players, Joseph Bull, for the last 7 games. I'm still unsure of his status but tonight would be a good time for his return. Cortland was able to slow the Bears momentum down last weekend, with a 93-88 win, so these Red Dragons with a pair of wins over Cortland can certainly pull off another win over the Bears.

The point spread favors Potsdam by a slender 3 point margin. I think it should be more. Potsdam 84 Oneonta 76.

The Bport-Cortland game was everything you would expect. Both teams played hard to the final buzzer and both had their shining moments. Jahadi Wallace hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to tie the game and send it into OT.  It was back and forth in OT until the final 21 seconds when foul shots sealed the victory with Tyler Collins and Danny Ansley hitting two each for the 86-80 win for the Eagles. Magic and All-Time, I wish I could join you for the SUNYAC championship at Bport, but I guess I am going to have to suffer down here in sunny Tampa, Florida. I will probably play some golf and then watch the games. Enjoy!!!

Potsdam pulled away in the second half to defeat a game Oneonta Red Dragon squad and clinch the #2 seed in the SUNYAC tournament and a first round bye.

Freshman Tyrese Baptiste had a career night with 28 points, on 12x18 from the floor and added 15 rebounds.

SUNYAC scoring average leader Isaiah Brown added 27 points on 9x15 from the floor and 4x7 from the arc, he also grabbed 9 rebounds and blocked 4 shots.

Kevin Mackin led the Red Dragons, hitting for 23 points on 7x16 from long range. The Dragons were once again without Joseph Bull who was on the bench in street clothes. The Red Dragons were whistled for 25 fouls and had three starters foul out.

Potsdam shot 47% from the floor and 41% from the arc.  Oneonta was held to 36% from the floor and 28% from the arc.

The Bears had 52 rebounds to 41 for Oneonta.

Potsdam moves to 14-3 in the SUNYAC, and 19-5 overall (19-4 in D-III).  Oneonta slips to 13-4 in the SUNYAC and 17-7 overall.  Oneonta can clinch the 3 seed with a win at Plattsburgh tomorrow, or an Oswego loss to Brockport at Laker Hall.  Potsdam wraps up its regular season vs. New Paltz tomorrow in a 4PM tip.

Friday night results:

Brockport State 86  Cortland State 80 in overtime.

I didn't predict the overtime but did predict Brockport winning 87-80. The Golden Eagles clinched the regular season crown and will host the Final Four next weekend. Cortland will now end up with the 5th seed and most likely will travel to Oswego for a first round playoff game on Tuesday.

Jahidi Wallace with 21 points to lead the Eagles. He added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Justin Summers with 8 points in 11 minutes as he continues his return to action.
Tyler Collins with 19 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds.
Montgomery Stroman with 13 points and 8 rebounds.
Antonio Alvarez with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Austin Grunder returns to action after missing a game and has a game high 29 points for the Red Dragons. He also has a game high 15 rebounds to get another double-double and in the process sets a Cortland record for rebounds in a season with 347, breaking the old record of 337. He also went over the 500 point mark for the season.
Eric Edwards also had a double-double of 25 points and 12 rebounds.
Brendan Fitzpatrick with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists.

Brockport will be at Oswego on Saturday afternoon while Cortland will host Geneseo.

Oswego State 64  Geneseo State 42

I had the Lakers winning by a 78-61 score. They got an early lead and stayed in front the rest of the way, winning by 22 points. The win locked them into at least the 4th seed. A win on Saturday over Brockport, coupled with an Oneonta loss to Plattsburgh, would give them the 3rd seed.

The Lakers were led by Jerimiah Sparks with a game high 15 points and a game high 7 rebounds.
Brandan Gartland had 13 points and Colby Moultrie had 12.

Geneseo got 12 points from Michael Gannon and another 12 from Alex Merhige.

The good news for the Knights is Plattsburgh lost to New Paltz which probably gave Geneseo the 6th and final playoff spot. They will most likely have to travel to Oneonta on Tuesday.

Oswego hosts Brockport on Saturday. Geneseo travels to Cortland.

Potsdam State 91  Oneonta State 83

I had the Bears winning this one 84-76. Both teams scored a few more than that but I had the 8 point margin of victory right on the money.

The Bears win the battle for 2nd place and with it get a first round bye. Oneonta will most likely end up in 3rd place unless they lose to Plattsburgh on Saturday and Oswego wins.

Potsdam led throughout the game but Oneonta was never far back and came within a single possession a number of times. The Bears finally got a double digit lead with 13 minutes left to play and kept a comfortable lead until Oneonta made a late run to cut it to 4 points. The Bears' Aaron Armstrong hit 5 of 6 from the line to close the game out.

Potsdam got a big game from Tyrese Baptiste who had a double-double of 28 points and 15 boards to capture scoring and rebounding honors.
Reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, Isaiah Brown, had 27 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists and a steal.
Danny Delsol-Lowry had 11 points 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
Aaron Armstrong had 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Kevin Mackin led Oneonta with 23 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Mackin set a new Oneonta record for 3 pointers in a season with 90, breaking the old mark of 83. He was 7 for 16 from downtown in the game.
Andres Rivera had a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Ian Schultz also with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Harrison Deegan with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block.

Potsdam will host New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta will travel over to Plattsburgh to take on the Cardinals on the final day of regular season action.

New Paltz State 73 Plattsburgh State 68

This game didn't turn out the way I would have liked it to, as I thought Plattsburgh would win a close game by a 75-69 final score. I was fairly close on the total but not on the winner. Had I known what I found out, when I walked into Memorial Hall Friday evening, I wouldn't have picked my Cardinals to win. Plattsburgh has been shorthanded all year but lately it has been even worse. Friday night was as bad as it got. Two starters were not able to play at all and a third player, who has missed the last 4 games tried to go, but after several minutes had to call it a day.

The first half was a back and forth affair until the Hawks got a little separation with about 5 minutes to go. They managed to stretch a 4 point lead at 31-27 with 2:46 to play, into a 10 point halftime advantage.

Plattsburgh continued to play catch-up as the lead stayed around the 7-12 point margin. Up 47-40, New Paltz used an 11-2 run to open up a 16 point lead at 58-42 with 9:23 to play. Plattsburgh responded with an 11-2 run of their own to make it 60-53. The Hawks continued to lead by multiple possessions as the teams traded baskets. Finally a hoop and harm, 3 point play by Travis Cox got the Cardinals within a single possession at 71-68 with 46 seconds to go. The Hawks came up empty and Plattsburgh had a chance to tie the game but they came up empty as well. The Cards had to foul and New Paltz made them both to salt this one away.

Have to give the Hawks credit for playing a tough game and making their shots when they needed to. They had an answer for each Cardinal charge. They had a tough year and they earned this one.

Proud of the Cardinals to hang in there and fight back from a 16 point deficit with a chance to tie the game at the end.

Plattsburgh got a huge game from Travis Cox who had a career best 31 points. He added 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks.
Nick DeAngelis had 11 points and 8 rebounds.
Matt Bernhard had 9 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.
Marlon Todd had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.
Cameron Ness had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

New Paltz was led by Scott Reisert with a double-double of 21 points and a game high 13 rebounds. He added 5 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.
Jake Passaretti had 11 points 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
RJ Meyers-Turner had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Tristan Wissemann had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.

Plattsburgh will take on Oneonta on Saturday in a must win situation if they want to make the playoffs. It would be a tough task for the Cardinals, if they were 100% healthy. With only 7 players available for the game, their chances don't look too good.

New Paltz will travel over to Potsdam to take on the Bears.

Feb. 22                        Final Gameday of the Regular Season

Geneseo State  at  Cortland State        4:00 PM

The Knights would like a win here just in case Plattsburgh pulls off the upset of Oneonta. Cortland is locked in as the 5th seed. The point spread has the Red Dragons favored by 14. I think they win by more.
Cortland 87 Geneseo 63

Oneonta State  at  Plattsburgh State   4:00 PM

Oneonta doesn't want to slip up here and lose the #3 seed in the conference tournament. A loss to Plattsburgh coupled with an Oswego State win over Brockport could do just that. The Red Dragons would rather take care of business and not leave it up to somebody else. Plattsburgh is banged up and couldn't defeat the last place team on Friday. They will be in a tough spot to get a W in this game against the #3 team. Oneonta is listed as an 11 point favorite. I don't think it will be that close, but I sure hope I'm wrong.
Oneonta 86 Plattsburgh 68.

Brockport State  at  Oswego State        4:00 PM       Featured Game of the Day

This could be like the December 6th game between these teams, which came down to the final seconds. Brockport won that one 68-67. Now, the Lakers are the home team and will try and even the season series. The Golden Eagles have already captured the regular season crown, so this game doesn't have that prize riding on the outcome. Both teams are still in the running for an NCAA at large bid, if they lose out on the automatic bid and every win is important. Oswego can still hope for the #3 seed in the YAC, but that's really a longshot. They will probably wind up as the # 4 seed and host Cortland next Tuesday. They have more reason to win this game than the Golden Eagles do because they can't afford many more losses and remain in contention for an NCAA bid.

The oddsmakers have made Brockport a 4 point favorite here. I like Brockport as well and expect a close game. Brockport 82 Oswego 77

Buffalo State  at  Fredonia State        4:00 PM

Playing for pride in this game. Bengals won the first meeting back in December. Blue Devils looking to get some revenge. Fredonia favored by 3 points. Fredonia 75 Buffalo State 71

New Paltz State  at  Potsdam State        4:00 PM

The Bears have clinched the #2 seed and the first round bye that goes with it. They need this win to fatten their record and look more attractive should they need an at large bid. This would get them to win #20. If they win a game next weekend and lose in the championship they would be 21-6. Might be good enough for an at large bid. Strength of Schedule could be a problem. And they may not be high enough in the regional rankings, although they should move up a few spots, when the next ones come out.

New Paltz got a win yesterday they won't be so fortunate today. They are listed as 23 point underdogs. They may cover the spread though. Potsdam 89 New Paltz 69.

Saturday's Final Scores

Buffalo State 92 Fredonia 87

Cortland 64  Geneseo 54

Oneonta 105  Plattsburgh 65

New Paltz 100 Potsdam 96

Brockport 85  Oswego 80 in overtime

Congratulations to the Brockport Golden Eagles on winning the Regular season. Putting up a 17-1 record in the YAC is no easy feat. Losing their All Conference player for 10 games and still going undefeated in that stretch shows the depth of the Brockport team. I wish them much success in the NCAA tournament which they should be a lock for with a 22-3 record and a solid SOS. I'm hopeful we may get another YAC team in the dance as well.

Congratulations to the New Paltz Hawks for sweeping the North Country weekend. The teams at the top of the conference, Brockport, Oneonta, Oswego and Cortland, couldn't pull off what the Hawks did yesterday and today. Making the long trip north and beating both Plattsburgh and Potsdam on their home court is going to make for a real happy bus ride on the way home. It wasn't a good year for New Paltz as they ended up at the bottom of the SUNYAC, but the way they finished will be a highlite the team will always remember. Especially today's win at Potsdam. The Hawks shot 59% in the game and hit the century mark for the first time in over 2 years.

And finally, Congratulations to my Plattsburgh Cardinals. We knew going in it was going to be a tough season. When you lose 5 starters it's never easy the next year. Then we lost our long time coach so the continuity of the program was also challenged.  We were fortunate to get Coach Blaine to lead us into the 20's and I'm sure with his guidance that the Cardinals will find themselves in the thick of the conference race next season.

I wasn't able to watch the Bport-Lakers finale, but it must have been a great battle as the Lakers hit a 3 pointer to send it into OT. For the second night in a row, my Eagles were able to pull out an OT win. These two games are great preparation for playoff basketball!!! I think we are in for a great SUNYAC playoff. As has been said all along any of the top 5 can win this. I wish I could see it live but will have to watch on my computer. Good luck, Eagles!!!!!

The new D3Hoops Top 25 came out Monday nights and Brockport moved up 2 spots to #23. Their vote total increased from 53 to an even 100.

RPI also joined the Top 25 at #24 with 58 points. They had 26 points last week.

Hobart got a single vote.

Eric Edwards from Cortland State has been named the SUNYAC Player of the Week for week ending Feb.23rd. The write up says it was his 3rd win but I believe it was his just 2nd win. He won it for the week ending December 22nd as well.

It marked the 6th time that a Cortland player (Austin Grunnder with 3 of those) won the award. Potsdam won it 5 times (Isaiah brown with 4 weekly awards), New Paltz, Brockport and Oswego each had 1 win.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has named Cortland's Eric Edwards (Binghamton, N.Y.) the PrestoSports Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.

Edwards averaged 22.3 points and 11.7 rebounds per game and registered three double-doubles in a 2-1 week for the Red Dragons. He began the week with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a 78-71 win at New Paltz, followed on Friday with 25 points and 12 rebounds in an overtime loss to league leader Brockport. Edwards closed the week with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, along with three assists, in a 64-54 win over visiting Geneseo Saturday."

Congratulations to Eric for another outstanding week.

Feb. 25                               SUNYAC First Round Playoff Games

Geneseo State  at  Oneonta State        7:00 PM

The Red Dragons swept the season series against Geneseo wnning both games by lopsided margins...35 points and 27 points. Perhaps the Knights will be able to make this one closer than the others. The experts think they will and list them as 15 point road dogs. I watched Oneonta put up 105 points last Saturday. I think they'll win by at least 20.  Oneonta 78 Geneseo 57.

Cortland State  at  Oswego State        7:00 PM

The rubber match between these two teams will be a knock down, drag out affair. Two hard nosed teams that love to shoot from long range, play solid defense, and don't quit. Hard to pick the winner here. The oddsmakers give the edge to Oswego by a 3 point margin.

The Lakers will need to limit the Red Dragons' two big men Austin Grunder and Eric Edwards. When Oswego won they held that pair to just 29 points. When the Lakers lost, Grunder and Edwards combined for 50 points (32 & 18).

Cortland gave up 31 points to Jeremiah Sparks in the loss to the Lakers. In the rematch Cortland held Sparks scoreless and they prevailed, but Joe Sullivan and Brandan Gartland had big games for Oswego, just not big enough.

I think the Lakers will get a stronger game from Sparks and will be a bit better from long range than the Red Dragons will be. Fouls could hamper the Cortland bigs. I'll go with Oswego in this one by a 76-72 final score.
