Congrats to Ali Marpet. Not only was he drafted, but in the second round, which has never happened for a D3 guy before. Very cool.

I thought you surely must be correct only on a technicality (D3 did not yet exist when he was drafted)

And not a technicality even so.

So far as I know, Augie's Ken Anderson (like IWU's Jack Sikma) had NO athletic scholarships and were in all essential ways D3 athletes, but I have no wish to re-open this debate.  My point was that a future NFL MVP QB being drafted lower than the second round seemed strange; then I woke up and remembered 6th round Tom Brady - the NFL draft is such a science! ::)

Congrats to Ali Marpet and good luck battling it out on the Oline in Tampa. Bucs GM must be pretty high on Ali to trade up for the pick as the rumor was the Patriots were ready to pounce with pick 64. This is a huge credibility moment for D3 football athletes and I think Ali has the guts, brains and skills to be successful and represent D3.

I wonder if he will challenge Winston to the 40 yard dash in camp?  ;D

Bartman, dlip is so pumped for Marpet! The kid has worked hard and has obviously made quite the offseason impression on the NFL. dlip wishes him all the luck in Tampa and will be rooting for him nonstop!

Great info Bartman! This is quite exciting for all of us (I am guessing)! dlip can't even imagine how cool this must be for a Hobart fan. Dlip is happy for Hobart and all of their fans and Alum! dlip vaguely remembers Rich Romer from Union playing for the Bengals as a kid. He thought that was awesome but had no idea (because he was quite young) just how much of an accomplishment that was. This is great!

Dlip thanks for your comments and Rich Romero history. Ali is now expected to start, but don't want to jinx him. I am sure camp will be tough competition but it is an awesome story. This is great for Hobart, Liberty League( any news on entrants?) and D3. Interesting to see how Coach Cragg rebounds from loss of grads ( marpet and Tyre Coleman were once in a career recruits) and loss of offensive and defensive coordinators. This should be a very competitive year in LL football. Good luck to Union turning things around....I love a good Union v. Hobart game

Anyone know this recent transfer to Hobart at QB, Tim Sydeski? Started 5 games for D2 Stonehill in his Freshman year and threw for an average of 233 YPG.

Reminds me of Strang, same build at least.

Found these Stonehill highlights (he was #10):

http://youtu.be/f9fJh1NDxpQ

Looks good in the highlight reel but split stats show he really struggled at this level, throwing 9 INTs in 5 games. He really struggled in games vs. UNH (3 picks) and SCSU (4 picks). He'll need to play better than that to earn a starting job at Hobart.

With Drach (a former FCS QB) taking over as OC, we could see Bart evolve into more of a passing attack regardless of whether Sydeski, Wallerstein or Thelander wins the job. Hobart will still be an I formation look to start but the Statesmen do have some very talented, young WRs like Shed, Pfohl and Cunningham who can stretch the field and get good YAC.

Guys like Cyr and Quay at TE give them a lot of options in the passing game also.

Don't take a lot of credence in the Magazine Polls for 2015, but here is what I noticed :

Sporting News Top 25 : #6 Wesley, #16 Hobart, #19 Fisher, #20 Rowan, #21 Widner and #25 MIT from the East.

Lindy's Top 20 : #8 Wesley, #15 St. Lawrence and #20 Fisher from the East.

Had seen the SN rankings but not Lindy's. While I do agree SLU deserves preseason consideration, leaving out Hobart altogether is pretty interesting to say the least.

It's interesting how you see that at many d1 programs who change coaching staffs.  Often times they bring in their own players and won't even look at the guys that are already there.  Boston College had that with 2 quarterbacks when Addazio came in 2 years ago (he is a great coach nonetheless).

Lindy's is such a joke.  Where do they even come up with this nonsense?

The writer pawned this off to his analyst, who after realizing he had no idea who most of these teams are, got the info from his cousin who spent 2 semesters at a D3 non football school, prior to transferring to an SEC school.

Dlip likes this story and will be rooting for this kid to do well at Bart. He thinks this could really be a great story if it works out. Home town hero???
