Arena:  Having some family members attending Calvin it is important to talk with the financial aid people prior to making any college decision.  Part of the current fund raising program goes to scholarships, and I read somewhere just the other day about 200+ new scholarships at the college in the recent past.

Calvin just recieved $500,000 (grant) for scholarships for math majors.

Very rarely does a college student pay the entire cost of tuition.

- 8% of Calvin students are full pay (no financial aid).
- Calvin alumni donations cover about 25% of the average student's tuition.

It's not every day you can hear the "where's your banners" chant two straight games.

Regardless of the "where's your..." chant . . . the best MIAA fan stunt ever is the fake banner the Hope students made and unfurled at the Civic (and I'm a Calvin fan)

CHN:  Well said.  I to recall the days in the early 90's when the Presidents of Hope and Calvin issued the dire warning that if fans couldn't control themselves they would discontinue the rivalry games.  None of us want to see that happen.   :)
At this point all Hope needs to do is just take one game at a time.

If you're referring to the letter in the GR Press from the two presidents then it was in the late-1980s (unless there were more than one).  Things were much worse in those days. The low point had to be when 100s of Calvin fans chanting 'Pedro-Pedro-Pedro...' as an insult to a Hope player with dark skin and black hair (Denison?). They also threw pizza boxes at the guy . . . it was out of hand. It happened, I was there (on the Calvin side).

To tell the truth, on opening night I was sitting across from the bench, above the students, but could not tell you which direction that was!  It will take a couple games to get my directional bearings.

Then you were on the south side of the arena.

A couple notes:

ephoop: ...Van Noord arena ... is designed to have 2 full size, regulation courts for practice.  It also features a 3rd regulation size floor that is covered by pull out bleachers for games.
I think the north and south end of the arena have full size courts; making four courts in the Van Noord. The north gym is out of commission due to some floor/bleacher issues.

ephoop:  A thrid 100,000 sq ft. building was added as an indoor track and soceer facility.
The indoor track encircles four tennis courts. I'm not sure if they will play indoor soccer in the tennis & track building or old fieldhouse. Baseball, softball, tennis (2 teams) and track and field (2 teams) will all practice in the Huizinga building through the winter.

ephoop:  I know there were issues with water drainage, some streets, etc., so governmental units were involved in the permit process, but doubt any gave funds for the buildings.
Oddly, Calvin land was swapped (Grand Rapids and East Grand Rapids) so the entire fieldhouse would be in one city. The tennis & track building was in EGR while the rest of the fieldhouse in GR. That way you only call one fire house when the place is burning down.

VanNoord is great but we need to fill the seats, come on out!
FYI. Attendance: 2234 again, poor weather but it'd be nice to have another 1,000 in there for the first men's weekend game.
Hope had Attendance: 3077 at the DeVos.

Watched the last couple of minutes of Trine/Olivet on the video.  Trine had the ball with 8 seconds to go, and couldn't get a shot off.  I would think if Trine can set up webcast certainly Calvin can.
Any school can offer a webcast.  But who'd do it?  A well done webcast takes time and energy. In general Calvin seems to do things well or not at all.

Looks very nice, but I'm puzzled why there's a walkway in front of the upper level seating, this was a problem at the old fieldhouse.

Because Van Noord is a multi-use building I'm guessing you have to put the 'closed' bleachers somewhere.  When the upper gyms are in use for classes, intramurals or practice the bleachers sit on the walkway.  This allows the gym to be enclosed on four sides while in use.

also, this fantastic photo back when Hope's travel budget was out of control.  I think they were flying to Alma that day.

Really?

Combined with a couple of freshmen who might inject new life, I think the Lady Knights might offer a test in February when they (not the men's team) host Hope for Homecoming at the new arena. This game has potential to be an exciting event.

Apparently Calvin is inviting any and all high school students to the game free of charge.

Just because all MIAA football teams are now done for the 2008 season, let's not all disappear from this board you guys. ::) ;)

Anyone know of any two-sport athletes (one being football)?

Congrats to Rebecca Kamp, the first ever freshman to be selected as MIAA MVP in volleyball. If her numbers hold up, she looks like a good bet for All American as well.

Have any MIAA athletes in any sport made league MVP and All American as freshmen?

I'm wondering ... how often is the MIAA MVP not All-American (in any sport)?

New (at least I think it's new) video of the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex Tour at Calvin:

Is the facility going to be finished in time for the season?

The January 7 Trine double-header will be the first varsity game in the new building.

On the plus side, does this mean that a possible third meeting between Calvin and Hope could be at Calvin or a neutral site now?

oddly, home court hasn't been to kind this fall ::

Sept 19 Hope over Calvin 3-1 at Calvin
Oct 17  Calvin over Hope 3-2 at Hope

now the  thing for tuesday is cancled hope gets the auto because they won the league

From MIAA site:

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced Saturday that it has canceled the MIAA volleyball tournament, which had initially been postponed until Tuesday, Nov. 11.

So this means Alma and Adrian loose their chance at the automatic qualifier so the MIAA has a chance to send an at-large team (possibly Calvin) as well as the MIAA automatic qualifier (Hope)?

Looking at the schedule Calvin's Homecoming game this year is Feb. 21st  versus Hope.  This is also dedication weekend for the new fieldhous complex.  I think I read the goal is to set a new attendance record for D3 women's bball that day.

The varsity play first followed by the junior varsity.  Apparently there's a get together next to the gym between games ... everyone's invited.
