Whew - I thought I posted a reply to this....but I don't see it. Wow.....in the words of comedian Bob Nelson in his football skit, "The mind is a terrible thing"

In my thoughts I posted - thanks Ice! It was a good season and to think that CNU was within 1 score of both Hopkins and RMC, which was not the fate of teams last weekend, makes one wonder!

Congrats to the Captains! NJAC Champions and gave RMC a run for their money in the first round. Crowley and his staff Co-Coach of the year. Gunner White offensive POY in NJAC. He was injured late in 1st half against RMC and never returned. That had a huge impact on the game.

We Played JHU and RMC very close. One score games. In fact all of CNU losses were within 1 score. Crowley has these guys heading in the right direction on the field and on campus. It is good to see the re-emergence of CNU football.

For me, CNU is the logical 1st round opponent. There should be a very good crowd for that game. (Do I remember correctly that CNU travels relatively nicely for a D3 school?)

We do indeed travel well for a D3 school. I remember one year, we had a regular season game at HSC and we sent 3 busloads of students plus all of us who drove. I'm not sure how they handle tickets for visitors at RMC (or what NCAA rules stipulate). I imagine most of what is allotted to CNU will be used. My wife keeps suggesting we go and I'm the alum!! I need to decide by tomorrow if I want tickets.

Nice video. I hear the F-22 Raptors every day at work. I’m in the flight path. In fact you can’t see them looking out either side of the building. They are directly overhead. Love jet noise!

The evidence is right there in black and white on D3hoops.com in the schedules section. Even the four C2C schools that have comparatively easy access to D3 opponents are playing fewer games in January and February than are most other teams, and a couple of those four had to add in games against Apprentice School just to pad out those Jan/Feb slates. And I didn't even get into whether or not those four particular C2C schools wanted to play the D3 opponents that they took on in January and February, as opposed to settling for the potluck of some conference's odd-team-out scheduling.

The idea that C2C coaches can just la-di-da themselves towards whatever their hearts desire in terms of scheduling is a myth. On the contrary, they're dealing with a lot of constraints.

Scheduling is a HUGE nightmare for CNU. You hit many of the issues. Once conference play starts, other teams in the middle of conference play do not necessarily want to play non conference games. You can find an odd ball once in a while. Also, you tend to travel more. I think the first year of the C2C the women's team at CNU had 4 home games after Jan 1. I will look that up. Correction - The women played a home game Jan 29th and a home game Feb 19th in the first full season of the C2C. That's hardly an advantage. That same season the men had 2 home games in January and 2 in February. I don't think that's a formula to "craft a schedule almost completely to your liking"

Also - in order to try to get 25 games in, CNU relies on home tournaments during holidays. That costs money keeping more of the campus open and also paying guarantees to have teams come to the games.

It is far from ideal. The coaches hate it. They would much rather have a normal conference schedule. To even think that they can schedule whatever and whenever they want is so far from reality it is absurd.

More good insight, MRSmith. I was wondering what was going on with SU. Things just seem "different". Fortunately at CNU, athletics is a focus of both the old administration and with the new President. Of course, it helps when the new guy was a QB at Coast Guard back in the day. Nice to have a D3 athlete at the helm.

I know the CNU coach is tired of hearing that last year, every CNU team was nationally ranked at one point except football. I think we have the right guy to change that, but it will take time.

Community engagement is huge for athletics and I believe CNU is doing it better than most. We still have some things to learn. It is nice to be the top public school in the Learfield standings last year!

Currently, Women's soccer is ranked #1, Field Hockey #3, preseason rankings have defending men's basketball champs #1 and the National runners-up women's team is #3. Men's Lacrosse was #4 last year. Women were #24.

A major issue now to keep all of this going is funding. A women's soccer bus trip to UMW a few years ago was $900. Today it is $4,000. Being in this weird C2C conference only adds to the craziness. Trying to schedule games in some sports during a time when everyone else is in conference play is difficult to say the least. So for hoops and some other sports you can hold tournaments. But you need guarantees of cash and hotel rooms to get teams to commit.

We have an Athletics Advisory Council to help with "Advancement". The first goal of that committee a few years ago was to raise a certain amount in order to start construction on a new Field Hockey/Lacrosse stadium. We met the goal in 4 months. And I believe this year we are hosting the NCAA Final Four in Field Hockey.

I started a QB Club this year and we meet once a week. I challenged the folks who paid to be members to raise even more money. Tomorrow I have to bring a check as I agreed to a certain level of matching funds! Yikes! I challenged everyone to raise a certain amount in 5 weeks. They did it in 2.

Sponsorship opportunities are being taken up by alum and the community. CNU has annual CNU Day and promotes it widely on social media. In past years, we have topped the $1Million mark in total. And more than half of that (maybe 65-70%) were gifts to athletics.

BUT - budget cuts! Everyone is experiencing budget cuts. It is more important now to keep the "Advancement" team rolling and keep people engaged at CNU.

I believe other schools, and in particular Salisbury, have/has the ability to do similar things. I think the alum, fans and community would respond. SU just needs an environment that encourages engagement. I hope someone at SU can step up and be the champion of an engagement push and things pick up again for you guys. I only cheer against the Skyrats when playing CNU.

Thanks Phil for that insight. I appreciate you taking the time to provide a brief history of the NJAC.

Interesting that you mention the TCNJ model being taken from my grad school alma mater, W&M.

As you probably know, CNU started as a 2 year branch of W&M in the early 60's and then became a 4 year affiliate around 1967 and eventually became independent in 1977-78. When I went to CNC ('85), I remember going to the "Computer" Lab with my Fortran punch cards to be sent the W&M computer for processing. Also at the time the ROTC program was a part of W&M. Some of my W&M MBA classes in the 90's were held at CNU before they opened a satellite campus nearby.

And some football connections. The first CNU head coach (Kelchner) was an assistant at W&M under Laycock for 15 years. Also, current CNU head coach Crowley spent time at W&M as an assistant.

Thanks for providing some background on the NJAC. I wonder if the larger enrollment at some schools is actually a negative. For the smaller schools, having 130 kids on a football team helps enrollment. For a school with 20,000+, there isn't as much of a need from the Admissions folks to get about 70 football players every year. For an incoming class, bringing in 70 for the football team out of 1,250 total FR = 5.6%. For a 20,000 enrollment that is only 0.35%. Just a thought I've had for awhile. I would imagine there are a multitude of factors besides enrollment that have been discussed on this board at times. Administration support, community involvement, etc.

Its unfortunate, because expectations were to compete for NJAC championship, I don't see how we improve from this going into a possible ECAC and next season.

Losing on homecoming sucks. At least it wasn’t 84-14.  ;D

CNU has their roster posted on line. 12 returning players and 9 Freshmen. I imagine some of the Fr will get playing time. You can't always tell how a recruiting class will fare. But man, these new guys....wow!

I noticed your stud FR Running Back, Bukula kept grabbing at his right calf and pulling up on his right foot trying to loosen his calf. A couple of times he took himself out of the game. He clearly wasn't 100%. Yet, he ran the ball 28 times for 123 yards. I'd hate to go up against him when he's 100%.
