McMurry Press Release

The Wright Stuff: War Hawks' Sprinter to Compete at U.S. Paralympics Championships this Weekend

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – McMurry University freshman track star Tanner Wright (Ft. Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) will participate in the 2017 U.S. Paralympics Track and Field National Championships, June 2-4 at the University of California, Los Angeles’ Drake Stadium. The event also serves as a qualifier to the World Para Athletics Championships, to be held July 10-12, 2017 in London, England.

Wright – who is also a standout placekicker on the War Hawks’ football team - will compete in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the U.S. Paralympics championship event. He has season-best times of 10.80 seconds in the 100 meters (at the ACU Open) and 21.99 seconds in the 200 meters (in the preliminaries of the American Southwest Conference championships).

Among the U.S. Paralympic competitors, Wright is No. 2 ranked in the 100 meters and No. 1 in the 200 meters. The 200-meter competition takes place on Friday (June 2), with the 100 meters on Saturday (June 3), with morning preliminary races and evening finals both days.

"We are so proud of Tanner and all which he has accomplished this season,” McMurry track & field head coach Brad Parris said. “Tanner doesn't view his disability as an obstacle and that's why he is so successful.  It's going to be an exciting summer for this War Hawk!"

Wright helped lead the McMurry team to the 2017 ASC men’s track and field championships, competing in six events.  Wright ran the second leg of the War Hawks’ gold medal 4x400 relay quartet, ran anchor on the fourth-place 4x100 relay (missing a medal by 3/100ths of a second), earned a bronze in the long jump, seventh in both the 200 meters and triple jump, while finishing fourth in his prelim heat of the 100. His long jump effort of 6.87 meters at the ASC meet was his season-best mark.

McMurry’s 4x400 relay also earned all-America status with a second place finish at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) outdoor championships.  The 4x100 was fourth and Wright finished ninth in the long jump at the NCCAA outdoor meet.

Wright was also an NCCAA All-American during the 2017 indoor championships, as McM’s 4x400 relay placed third.

On the football field, he was a first team All-NCCAA and a second team All-ASC selection. Wright ranked No. 6 in the entire NCCAA in scoring, as well as topping the War Hawks’ team in points scored. He set a McM season record by going 35-for-35 on extra-point kicks and tied a single game record for PATs by going 9-for-9 versus Texas College.  He also averaged 58.3 yards per kickoff attempt, with eight touchbacks, and went 8-for-10 on field goals.

Wright condition is called Arthrogryposis, which shrunk his joints when he was in the womb. Wright’s left arm did not fully develop. Additionally, he has gone through minor issues with his ribcage and left leg, as well. As a youth, Wright had three surgeries at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas.

Wright – a biomedical science major at McMurry – would one day like to return to Scottish Rite and work as a caregiver. For Wright, it would be a chance to give back for the blessings he received from the organization.

Wright was named as the McMurry University Athletics Department’s “Outstanding Freshman” athlete for 2016-17, as well.

(McMurry Freshman Tanner) Wright 4th in 100 at World Para Athletics Championships; Top U.S. Finisher in Race

LONDON, England -   McMurry University sophomore Tanner Wright (Fort Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.) got his first-ever taste of international track competition under his belt on Saturday, earning a fourth-place in the 100 meters - T47 class at the World Para Athletics Championships at Olympic Stadium. Wright was the top finisher from Team U.S.A. in the race.

Wright ran a time of 11.05 seconds in the finals.

Brazilians Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos and Yohansson Nascimento went 1-2 in the race.  Ferreira dos Santos ran a world record time of 10.53 in winning the gold.  Poland’s Michal Derus was third (10.81).

Wright started his inaugural international competition by running the second-fastest time of his career in the 100-meters during the Saturday morning preliminaries.  Wright was third place in the second heat of the event – and fourth-fastest qualifier overall – by posting a time of 11.02 seconds, advancing him to the evening championship session.

Wright was also the youngest competitor in the championship race of the 100-meters.  At 19-years old, Wright was an average of seven years younger than the other seven runners in the field (with an average age of 26).

“We are so proud of Tanner’s finish today (in the 100),” McMurry Head Track and Field Coach Brad Parris said.  “To be one of the best in the world within his classification is a huge accomplishment.

“I know today’s finish will only increase Tanner’s focus. The World championships awards stand is in clear view for him and I know he’ll keep pressing towards it.”

Wright will have a few days off before his next competition in the prelims of the 200 meters on Friday (July 21) and – should he advance – the 200 finals next Saturday (July 22).  Wright is also slated to run the lead leg of Team U.S.A.’s 4x100 relay team, scheduled to compete on (Sunday) July 23

Tanner was 35 of 35 on PAT's and 8 of 10 on FG's last season.

10.55 secs scored 1 point (All-American) in the finals in 2017.

Wright Adds a 4th in 200 at the World Para Athletics Championships

LONDON, England – McMurry University’s Tanner Wright ran his second-fastest time ever in the 200 meters – 22.22 seconds - and earned a fourth place finish in the T47 division for Team U.S.A. at the World Para Athletics Championships at Olympic Stadium. Wright’s time was his personal best in para athletics competition and second only to the 21.99 he ran in the preliminaries of the American Southwest Conference championships in April.

Wright looked to be in position for the bronze medal coming down the stretch of the rain-dampened track.  But Wright was passed in the final 20 yards by Poland’s Michal Derus.  Brazil’s dynamic duo of Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos and Yohansson Nascimento went 1-2 in the race, with Ferreira dos Santos setting a world record (21.21) in the process.

“”We are watching a young man race at the highest level for the very first time,” McM head track and field coach Brad Parris reminded. “You can see – and even feel – his effort.

“Each race gives Tanner more experience and more confidence. Fourth place on the world stage is a great accomplishment. I can’t wait for him to team up with his USA teammates and run for a 4x100 meter relay medal (on Sunday).”

Wright was also fourth in the 100-meter dash earlier in the competition, giving him a pair of top-four placements, in his first-ever venture into international athletics competition.

Wright is expected to run the lead leg for Team U.S.A. in that 4x100 event on Sunday. The 4x100 is slated to begin at 1:33 p.m. Central Time.

At age 19, he still has 2 and possible 3 more Para Athletics ahead of him.

21.58 secs made the finals of D3 in 2017, and  21.46 scored 1 point (All-American) in 2017

DQ Strips Team USA of Gold in 4x100

LONDON, England – Team USA’s 4x100-meter relay team – including McMurry University sophomore Tanner Wright (Ft. Worth, Texas/North Crowley H.S.)  – had a World Para Athletics Championships gold medal, literally, taken out of its hands when the group was disqualified after a protest by Germany.  Team USA was cited for a “lane violation,” according to reports, despite winning the race by 1.5 seconds ahead of the German team.

According to the broadcasters doing the Championships’ web cast, the violation came on the exchange between Jarryd Wallace and Wright, the second and third runners. No further clarification was provided via the broadcast.

When the protest was upheld, Germany moved up to the gold medal position.

Congratulations to Esther Seeland, a FY Falcon who won the national title at 800 meters this weekend in a brilliant 2:05. You can watch the whole race, starting at about 2:36:30, here:

https://www.ncaa.com/video/trackfield-outdoor-women/2019-05-25/diii-outdoor-track-field-day-three-full-replay

Last year, Esther won the HS girls 800 in the state meet. She declined multiple D1 track scholarships, including (so I am told) at least one full ride, in order to play soccer and run at Messiah. This year and last year, PA is perhaps the top state nationally for girls from 800 to XC.

At about 51 minutes, you can also watch Falcon SR Ben Schott come from behind and win the steeplechase decisively.
