2021 NCAA DIII Women's Team Tennis Championship-- update

Emory vs Wesleyan

Emory defeated Wesleyan, 5-0

Emory swept all 3 doubles matches, taking first doubles, 8-1; third doubles, 8-4; and second doubles, 8-2.

Emory took first singles, (6-1, 6-0), and wins the national championship by taking sixth singles (6-0, 6-2).

DIII Men's Tennis Championships Final--

Emory vs Case Western Reserve University-

Emory defeated Case Western Reserve, 5-2

Emory took first doubles, 8-4; and second doubles, 8-4.  Case Western Reserve took third doubles, 8-4.

Emory took third singles (6-3, 6-0).  CWRU took first singles (6-0, 6-3).  Emory then took fourth singles (6-0, 6-4). Emory then clinched the national championship by taking sixth singles (6-3, 6-4)

Congratulations to the Emory Eagles-- 2021 NCAA DIII Men's Tennis Champions (team title).  Emory successfully repeated as men's team tennis champions and, with the women, swept both national championships this year in DIII team tennis.

CWRU will have to win ALL THREE of these remaining singles matches.

It's going to be tough.

That said, win or lose, you can't help but be proud of CWRU for getting this far.

This is the first time that CWRU, or any of its predecessor institutions, have ever played for any national title, in any sport, at any level.

For the ULTIMATE "non-jock" school to make it this far..............IS SOMETHING!!!

Yes, that is something.  Congrats to the CWRU Spartans for finishing as national runner-up this year in men's team tennnis.   Brandeis had already won 2 national DIII team championships before the UAA was founded, but the last of those two was in 1983 with men's cross country, and the first was way back in 1976 in men's soccer. 

In men's team tennis, Brandeis got their first 2 wins in this tournament and advanced as far as the national quarterfinals-- a first in this sport.  It was the first appearance in the NCAA DIII Men's Team Tennis Tournament for the Judges in over 30 years-- the only previous appearance in this sport was back in 1989.

However, the real winners are everyone in the fact that DIII at least was able to have a few postseasons this spring, and that we did not lose 2 spring seasons to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The DIII Championships Committee has just released minutes of their May 2021 electronic votes and their June meeting.

On May 5, 7, and 12, electronic votes were taken that granted waivers of minimum number of contest requirements and in-region requirements for the Spring 2021 season to various DIII teams.

For the record, the Championships Committee granted waivers in tennis to the following institutions for the Spring 2021 season a few months ago:

Amherst-- Women's Tennis-- minimum number of contests required to be played was waived.

Brandeis-- Women's Tennis-- minimum number of contests required to be played was waived.

Emory-- Women's Tennis-- 50% in-region requirement waived.  (Emory won national championship).

Williams-- Women's Tennis-- minium number of contests required to be played was waived.

These waivers only applied to the spring 2021 season.

Hard to believe, but the indoor portion of tennis season kicks off this weekend for Brandeis women's tennis when they play at DI Bryant, and then the following weekend kicks off the indoor portion of the tennis season for Brandeis men's tennis when they host DII Bentley.

I believe that both contests will be played under DI rules, with the doubles matches as a group only counting as 1 point.

Hard to follow the tennis live even if the matches get live streamed, but it will be interesting to read the recaps.  (Tennis matches in DIII usually do not get commentary-- at least for Brandeis, that is....)

OF COURSE I'll be cheering for CWRU men's and women's tennis in the upcoming NCAA tourney.

Hopefully, the men will win it all.
