Solid win by the Knights tonight. Calvin led most of the game but Wisc-Lutheran never let up and was always ready with a big play to keep it close - the final 12 point margin was the only time Calvin's lead seemed at all safe. Calvin seemed to struggle a bit with rebounding and some poor shooting but played great defense, they ran the Warrior's shot clock out more than a few times and had quite a few good steals. Looking forward to another great game against UWSP tomorrow.

I was at the Calvin-Chicago game and can share a few observations.  Yes, Chicago was very physical. They came out and hit Calvin in the mouth, going up 17-4 out of the gates.  Calvin did adjust and in my opinion could have won the game if they had just a few more minutes of time.  They showed a lot of heart and clawed back the rest of game after that initial run by Chicago.    A couple of the Chicago players finished with 4 fouls (#11 and #44, both had the same last name, sisters?) and the game's tenor would have changed significantly without those two on the floor.

I was also impressed with the Calvin students.  They were more vocal that night than a lot of the men's games I've been to.

Verkaik made some very tough shots all night but unfortunately missed a couple of easier ones down the stretch that would've made a big difference in the outcome and how the last couple minutes played out.  Chicago also hit their free throws down the stretch better than the Knights who missed several around the 5 or 6 minute mark.

Overall, this Calvin team has a lot to be proud of this year.  Beating an awesome Hope team twice, and winning both the regular season and conference tourney championships.

I was there Saturday and agree with what you said - Chicago did play very physical - and very good - defense. They did foul a lot but Calvin was forced all night into taking bad or off balance shots and I think that's why they did miss a few that seemed like they should have gone in, they were very well defended every time they shot.  Lots of credit to Chicago for hitting key shots when they needed to, all through the 2nd half Calvin would start to crawl back into the game, getting to within 7, and then 6, and then 5, and every time Chicago would score 4-5 straight points to put their lead back out of reach.  Calvin did finally get to within 2 but Chicago's lead was right back to 6 or 7 a minute or two later.  It was uncanny.

My wife just informed me that the Snikkers family article and photo is actually on the front page of the Grand Rapids Press today if anyone prefers the print version.

Go Knights!

Just a heads up that it looks like there will be a video stream of tonight's action from Carthage's website:

Anyone else enjoy living in the future?  I do! ;D

You're in the future? Lucky, I'm stuck in the present! It's not all bad, we have streaming video here too.

Well, relative to that post, it's the future now....

Back to basketball though - good luck to all the teams tonight!

Except for about 7-8 minutes early in the 2nd half where I don't think they scored at all, I thought Calvin looked great tonight - much more like mid-season form than Friday.  Defensively, the only thing they let Cornerstone do was shoot 3s (and they did shoot the lights out from there, granted) but I doubt Cornerstone had more than a handful of points inside.  Offensively they had a lot of great drives and looked good except for that one scoring drought.

Tom Snikkers got tournament MVP and Shuster was on all tournament team, along with (I think) Justin Yoder and Ronald Bates (who were both impressive, Yoder for 3s and Bates had a bunch of great steals), Will Bowser, and one Aquinas player who is slipping my mind.

Great games from both teams, congrats to Hope on the hard fought win.

As we were talking about last night, Calvin seems to play best when they're down, and even when they were down 14 early I was certain they would storm back and happy to see they did.  Looks like they peaked a bit too early though and couldn't quite hold off the inevitable Hope comeback.  Despite that, Salo definitely had some timely 3s and that was the best game I've seen Mantel play in a long time.

Clutch free-throws by Bunn right at the end to put the game out of reach, and a great game by him all around.

Here's hoping for an at large bid!

I kinda felt bad for Evans when he ran into John's screen. He went down hard and never even knew John was there. Just one of those screens set well in advance and Trent (I believe) used it brilliantly... Andre just never saw him. To make matters worse, this came just moments after he was on the floor for getting hit in the bathing suit area (at least that's how it looked to me, maybe got the wind knocked out or landed on an ankle funny.)

Yeah, that was just brutal.  I think both times he actually fell hard on his tail-bone.  Good to see that he was back in a few minutes later though.

Calvin won a game today that they probably shouldn't have.  Still can't believe they came back from 14 down.

Seems like a common story this season for them, they certainly haven't had many easy wins and have come back from a big defecit quite a few times if I remember right.  It speaks well of them to be able to battle back but not very well in that they seem to have trouble starting off with any energy.

Calvin was shooting bricks for probably a good 2/3 of the game, there were long stretches they just didn't score at all, including the first 4.5 minutes of the 2nd half.  Clutch free throw shooting by just about the whole team though, lots of 2 for 2 FT attempts at key points in the game, especially near the end.

Intangir:  Considering the time off from b-ball that Schuster has had his performance this year has been a pleasant plus for Calvin.  Considering he is already a jr. I wouldn't expect to see much physical change.  Schuster is what he is, and provided Calvin can get a big body inside if he does next year what he has done so far this year it will be great.

Oh yeah, I know, mostly just joking  :D  He's been great this year.

Also, it seems to me like Schnyders and Snikkers are going to be very fun to watch the next few years, they two seem to make a good pair and look like two of the most purely athletic players Calvin has had since I've been following them.

Snikkers is a Freshman and has three years left.  Schnyders is a junior and has only one year left.  With that said, however, Calvin will still be a very fun team to watch the next few years.
I am inclined to agree that Calvin will be fun to watch, but it is going to be very hard for them to prosper without a physical presence like Mantel inside.  From my perspective they will be much like this year's Hope team was up until the time Venema started getting serious pt, and making his presence felt.  Looking at the stats leaders one sees lots and lots of jr's listed so expect the MIAA overall to be more competitive next year.

No doubt that will be a big loss for them, big shoes to fill there.  Maybe Shuster will put on 20-30lbs in the off-season?  Time to hit the gym!  Hm, at least Calvin has a passable gym now, I'm not sure either Mantel or Shuster would have been able to stand upright in the old one...

Hm yeah I was thinking they were both freshman, probably should of checked first.  Either way though, I've enjoyed seeing them so far this year and look forward to more.  I also want to mention Paul Campbell as someone who's become really fun to watch this year, especially for a guy who doesn't generally put up a lot of big numbers, he plays great on defense and seems like he's really improved on offense as well.  I think I remember seeing KVS mentioned how he's contributed as well, so I'm glad he's getting some notice from the team.

After an opening 20 minutes that was uncomfortably akin to Saturday's overtime win, Calvin methodically carved up Alma in the second half at Van Noord. Once the Knights established a double digit lead the game speeded up, taking the Scots out of their comfort zone. Calvin completely dominated the boards 45-21 and Alma was unable to bank in a single triple. When Silverthorn airballed a shot in the first half, a surprising Calvin student section got energized, commenced the standard "air ball" chant every time Silverthorn touched the ball and--to my amazement--kept it up the entire game. The Knight student section acted much like the neighborhood dog that refuses to stop barking at anyone who dares walk past his owner's home. The student's peskiness was nice to see and seemed to affect Silverthorn who went 2-11. Where have these fans been all year? I hope they show up this weekend--and bring some friends.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure a good chunk of the student section was there for the Saturday game as well and as soon as Alma started into their slow-down, all 3 point shooting offense, they recognized it at were having none of it.  I've got kind of mixed emotions about the actual cheering though, one hand, considering the student section has been basically mute the whole year, to have them being loud and obnoxious is fantastic.  On the other, I've never like the type of chants which single out opposing players (such as 'airball'), it's just mean spirited and unnecessary.  I've always thought fans should stick to cheering for their team, not against the opposing, but it was good to see them involved.

Anyway, as for the game itself, as I said, Alma did try for a repeat of Saturday's game with their offense, frequently holding the ball at half court until about 10-15 seconds left on the shot clock before trying to find someone for an open 3.  Thankfully for Calvin, they had nowhere near the hot touch they did on Saturday and Calvin's defense gave them quite a few shot-clock violations as well.  Calvin's offense looked better as well, they did get some good inside play from Mantel, Shuster and Campbell.  There were a few times when it looked like everyone was just standing around waiting for someone else to do something but overall they looked pretty good.

Also, it seems to me like Schnyders and Snikkers are going to be very fun to watch the next few years, they two seem to make a good pair and look like two of the most purely athletic players Calvin has had since I've been following them.

I definitely agree that both games tomorrow could go either way very easily depending on who's firing on all cylinders.  Gonna be a fun night.

Good luck to everyone on Friday!
