Brian,

Sad to see you go from the Red Dragons. It was enjoyable watching you play the last few years and I wish you the best of luck in the rest of your time at Cortland. You're a welcome edition to the board as we enter what's hoping to be an exciting season in the SUNYAC.

ILoveBBall,

If you're going to post about yourself, at least use your real name.  And if you're going to use an alias, make sure that your e-mail address doesn't give you away.

I'll be talking about the SUNYAC and the rest of the East with Dave McHugh on Hoopsville this Tuesday night. Stay tuned to the main page for more information.

Spring of Poland

Posterrrrrrrr is here----Less than a week to go before the season tips off, great posts so far in here, even better debates.

Cortland will undoubtedly miss Kirchoff's outside shooting, and underrated rebounding as well. However, if that big transfer is as good as all the Cortlandites say he is, he slides into that empty spot into the lineup, Ranieri and Headley slide down a position. Not that bad.

As for Brockport: Rother is unable to play 1st semester because Brockport gave him bad advice by letting him go to a CC last year for a semester. Nothing to do with anything from Cortland's end. It's not up to them. Rother has to have a year of "residence" at Brockport before playing. He doesn't. End of story. However with only 2 or 3 Conference games played in the 1st semester anyways, not that huge of a deal I wouldn't think. Belucci and Co. will have enough power to have a fine 1st semester.

What's with all the bashing of P-Dam in here? 9th in the Conference? C'mon...They still have Barton. They still have some decent backups from last year's squad, and they have a fine recruiting class from what my sources tell me. They'll be more than fine. Pencil them in for 9-10 wins in Conference play.

My picks:
Brockport
Cortland
Oswego
Potsdam
Oneonta
Plattsburgh (Without Simmons; he's no longer there)
Buffalo St. (So long as these transfers are the real deal)
New Paltz
Geneseo
Fredonia
SUNYIT

To me, it's a 3 team race. Port, C-State and the Lakers seem pretty far removed from everyone else. Fair to say?

lakernation

Should be a great season, building off of last year.  Real tough to call a favorite in this race.  B-Port, Cort, O-Town, you know Potsdam will be there, an up and down Platty team makes for a very top heavy and competitive league this year.  I cant wait to get things started.

Now its time for a shameless plug.  You can catch the action of the Max Ziel Tourny this weeked on 88.9 FM WNYO, and webcast @ www.oswego.edu/~wnyo

Lets tip it up!

Basketball instead of Lakers hockey on WNYO this weekend? Blasphemy! :)

Hey, its the first weekend for basketball.  Gotta do it.  For the second straight year, hockey will take a back seat to basketball.

Conference has nine teams out of the gate tonight, all tourney dates. Four at home:
Buff St and first year coach Fajri Ansari host Marietta (Naz-Pitt Bradford other 1st round);  young Oswegos entertain NY York (Caz-Skidmore); unknown Plats vs. Hartwick (Lehman-WNEng); UTech vs. Alb Pharm (UC-Vt SJoe)

Five travel:
Corts at F&M fest in Lancaster and draws Ct's Trinity (F&M-Gwynedd Mercy), Freds at Rutgers-Newark vs. Emerson (RN-Centenary), NP at Hamilton vs. Messiah (Hams-Medaille), Oneonta at Muhlenberg vs. Lynchburg (Mules-StatenIsle), PBears in Clarkson vs. Wilkes (Clarks-PSmiths)

Bports (w/Bellucci, D1 import Cheves and wo/Rother) begin season and road show  Tuesday at StLawrence, while Genesees have tourney duty Sat/Sun at Emmanuel vs. WConn (Emman-MIT)

Interesting that no traveling SUNYAC team faces host in first round. Might that mean home side desires to steer clear of tougher 1st rounder (vs. SUNYAC) in order to make final?

Do know Corts relishing challenge at F&M where three other entries all potent. F&M perennial postseason team (23-7 last season) and coach nearing 700 Ws at the school. G-M 23-5 and 26-3 last two winters but lost 6-9 center to pros. Trintiy coming off 19-7 season and features preseason A-A center Tyler Rhoten (22.1 ppg, 7.9 rpg), onetime football scholarship candiate at Syracuse

Potsdam opens with gritty 68-55 win against a veteran Wilkes team with 10 of top 12 back from last year

Foul plagued contest with 48 fouls called and 4 fo's (two for each side).

Senior wing Ernst Ducena led the Bears with 21 pts on 7-11 from the floor including 3-4 from beyond the arc.  Ducena also put the clamps on Wilkes star soph Chris Shovlin, who was held to 11 pts, including 4 in the last three minutes when Potsdam sported a double digit lead.  Edane Barton added 12 first half points for the Bears, who return three regulars and sport 10 new players on the roster.

Potsdam played suffocating defense, forcing 22 turnovers, and also outrebounding the Colonels 34-35.

Potsdam's eight freshmen and 10 newcomers played a total of 89 minutes, and made solid contributions scoring, defending, and on the boards.  Potsdam went 11 deep in the opener against a tough opponent.

Potsdam faces Clarkson, 81-51 winner over USCAA opponent Paul Smiths in the 4 PM title tilt.

So far, so good.

Potsdam looked decent in their opener this evening versus Wilkes (PA).  The pre-season rankings of Wilkes (#10 in D3) was more than a bit off - and what we saw on the court certainly wasn't indicative of that recognition.  Somehow they managed to keep the game within reach throughout despite being over-played by the Bears.

Wilkes had a decent press.  Not much for creating turnovers, but good in slowing the pace down to keep a streaky team like Potsdam at bay.  Some great 3-point shooters to boot.  A few more passes to them and the game might have gone down to the wire.  Definite rebounding abilities as well.  They pulled down a lot of boards, even having the good fortune of rebounding many of their own foul shots, which lead to many second chance opportunities from errant field goal attempts.  Admittedly, the height advantange was on Wilkes side and played a significant role in helping that to happen.

Potsdam had its moments as well.  Good penetration in the Paint. All stemming from players who move around without the ball - a great deal more than last year - and indicative of a team-effort as opposed to placing the burden on the returners. Reliable distance shooters coming through in the clutch.  I'm still warming up to the Idea of Barton playing the 4 position, when he had been playing 3 up until this year, but the Bears need him to fill that slot unless the new recruit class matures in that role.  Scary moment for Edane - a close brush with a rolled ankle while trying to turn a stolen ball breakaway into what appeared to be a dunk, but fortunately had most of his weight was on the other foot and fell forward instead of on it.

Many new faces for the Bears this year.  Dobbs substitutes and rotates with such frequency, that everyone got a lot of quality court time, rotation that was especially helpful in the whistle-fest that played out this evening.

*insert your own referee jab here*  ;o)  (j/k!)

I can't recall a time after the first ten minutes that Bisesi, Barton, & Ducena were all on the court playing together.  It's great to see new talent being rotated into prime time minutes early on, and against a purportedly "good" school, it sends a confident message to the players that Sherry has confidence in them, and is not content to just rely heavily on his returners to make things happen.

One new addition that looked promising from tonight that may be deserving of an "upgrade" was Freshman Gaurd Alvin Dike, who showed some instances of great ball handling, speed, and agility in the paint. It looks like he must have spent a good amount of time over the summer practicing on his hometown courts in Brooklyn to refine those improv skills.

Come home games, watch out... the crowd definitely contributes like a "6th man" .  The Maxcy Maniacs have grown, and the Energy Pep band is also due to be in full force once again.

If the Bears returners remain healthy, they'll run with the top schools in the SUNYAC.  Likely in the 2 or 3 spot - depending on how quickly the freshman squad step up and take to the Dobbs system.

More to come following tomorrows match-up versus victorious host team Clarkson.

Congrats to the bears on an out of conf victory. I always root for the sunyac out of conf. I dont see anything telling me wilkes was #10 in d3 preseason rankings?? They were 15-12 last year and finished either 5th or 6th in there conference. I also dont see them receiving a single vote in the preseason top 25??

Re: Wilkes/Potsdam

As noted elsewhere on the board, the #10 ranking was Smith & Street's, a once a year ranking done without even knowing who's on the team.

Wilkes was 15-10 last year in a tough league with Kings & Scranton.

They have 10 of their top 12 back, and started 1 freshman.  they are big, 6-8, 6-6, 6-5.

They have a potential D-III AA in soph Chris Shovlin who averaged 18.8 ppg last year after transferring from D-I Monmouth.  He was a two year first team all-state player in PA, and for a while was being courted by Rutgers of the Big East.  He was blanketed by Potsdam captain Ernst Ducena, held to 11 pts.  Ducena meanwhile tossed in 21 including 3x4 from long range.

Wilkes was picked as the preseason favorite in their league based on all their returning talent, and there is a lengthy snippet on them in Mark Simon's column this week.

That being said, they couldn't handle Potsdam's half court pressure, and Potsdam's athleticism won the battle of the boards by 9, despite a Bear height disadvantage of about 3" per position.

Potsdam has three returning regulars, five letterman total, but has reloaded with 8 freshmen, 1 JUCO, and one walkon who came to Potsdam to study, held his own in the off-season wars and has turned into a nice player.

Top Freshmen appear to be Alvin Dike, Msgr. Scanlon, NYC, & Brandon Siskavich 6-7 C/F, Peru, NY.   Both have nice games and will contribute right from the get go.

Dobbs & Co. know what they're doing, work hard at it, and know that tough defense generates lots of good things in the game.
